Dorian: So spontaneously breaking into song isn't something that's done in the south?
Inquisitor: Not usually. What exactly was that song about?
Dorian: Well, let's just say it's not meant for polite company.
Cole: But why would anyone bring a mule and a honeycomb into a brothel?

I'd already brought this up several pages back about how I feel you see more of the real Dorian in the sequences during the Haven attack if you sided with the Templars and yet because the tendency is to want to spend as much time with Dorian as possible, people are inclined towards Hushed Whispers instead of Champions of the Just, plus I find it very difficult to abandon the majority of innocent mages to their fate simply because Fiona is an idiot.
With the Templars path I feel Dorian is truly heroic. He knows you rejected his help (if you did go to Redcliffe like I did) and yet he still dashes to warn you He arrives with just a basic staff and his casual clothes. One of the first things I had to do on getting to Skyhold was run him up a set a robes. He was so exhausted on arrival he was on his knees, yet immediately he gets up and helps Roderick even though he doesn't know the man. He stands up to Cullen when the latter is suggesting bringing down the mountain and burying everyone in trying to get Cory. Then he supports Roderick so that everyone can get to safety before staying by his bedside and comforting him in his dying moments, while everyone else is either arguing or singing.
As you say, you'd expect that of a spirit of compassion but not any sort of noble, let alone someone from Tevinter. I love that aspect of Dorian and that is why my canon romance run is with my hunter Lavellan, where I could justify him going to the Templars. He rejected Dorian's help because he was from Tevinter and didn't trust him any more than anyone else from there but then he saw what Dorian was like at Haven and in the mountains and realised that he had misjudged him.

Hi all! Long-time lurker, first time poster to this thread. I have absolutely nothing to add to the clever, insightful things comments about Dorian's character people have been posting. (And nothing but a tee-hee for the comment about random musical numbers! Love your posts, Dr. Doctor!)
I do, however, have fanfic! Join Me Sometime. This is Dorian at his...less than compassionate best, shall we say, but he's working on letting down his walls.
In my first playthrough, I had the Dorian quest bug-- The Last Resort of Good Men never triggered. So frustrating! I had to watch the quest on YouTube and weep many, many tears because my character was missing the family drama. It especially sucked because I take a pretty dim view of Magister Halward--there are some things you just don't do to your kids, y'know?--and a lot of the YouTube videos I found were all about forgiveness and healing. (And for people who like that sort of thing, more power to you! It was just not the way I was playing my character.)
The bug finally got sorted out, and it was a beautiful thing. Sometimes I randomly replay that quest. Because I can. Muahaha.

OMG! Tell me, did Dorian then draw diagrams?

See, I never really saw forgiveness in Dorian. Maybe because I've been through a similar thing with a relative who hated that I'm gay and they were like an older sibling to me. It's not something you can forgive and I think people throw the concept of forgiveness around too lightly. It's possible to heal and move forward without forgiveness and I think that's what Dorian did. He's grateful his father acknowledges that he had been wrong, but he's not going to go play happy family again because the bridges between them have been burnt. It was more that he feels relieved that his father admits to his wrongdoings and his selfish pride, but it's still a matter of being too late to go back to how things were or should have been.
I mean, consider for a moment that Dorian could very easily think that his father only apologised because he's become so embroiled in scandal that he's got nothing to lose except an heir. Also, you could easily play the selfish card with Halward, he seeks out Dorian only when he's joined the Inquisition, but why? So he can take home grand tales of how his son is helping save Thedas? There is so much room for self interest at play and with someone whose trust is so broken, I doubt Dorian would be so inclined to forgive. I mean, he goes on a spiel about how much he disdains his father and how much his father disdains him that calling his moment of reason 'forgiveness' feels cheap.
As an aside....I really need to write fanfiction...or something. I'm collabing with a friend (who actually writes) and we've been at this Dorian fic for a while now. It should be done today actually.

I was watching Ramon Tikaram's interview for 5 Greedy Bankers and happened to google his name. To my amazement, he worked on a Kama Sutra movie:

Now I'm curious to know just exactly what positi- er, I mean, what role he played.

Going off of WOT2's entry on Dorian, the Last Resort of Good Men comes off more as Dorian pointing out that he's not just some drunken layabout who ran away from his responsibilities. He's joined the Inquistion because it's the right thing to do, and if anything Halward taught him the value of having principles. Had he realized that and accepted who his son is maybe thing might have been different.
Hopefully we don't have the fun of "Awkward Dinner with your LI's Family" DLC.
Personally, I would LOVE awkward dinner with your LI's fam DLC. Sounds deliciously scandalous. Hope there'd be an option to give your LI a hand (if you know what I mean).

Dorian somehow turned into my favourite DAI companion. Which is odd, because until pretty late in the game, he was actually the one of the ones I used the least - I played a mage, which meant that I had limited use for the mage companions.
But, damn it, Dorian just won me over. With the way he passionately loves his country, and is furious about how it has failed itself. With the way he freely admits to deep feelings of hurt and betrayal for what his father tried to do to him, without getting whiny or weepy about it. With the bombastic pride, which doesn't stop him for a moment from admitting mistakes or being willing to learn - and, on the flipside, with the way he keeps his mind open to new ideas and ways to improve himself without feeling the need to angst and beat his breast about it.
With, all in all, the sheer goddamn STYLE of this man. ![]()
Having reached the last parts of the game and running around trying to fully explore all the areas, I take Dorian with me more often than not. I'm a fully-fledged Knight-Enchanter now, so I have more flexibility in forming a party - and I know whose banter is usually the most fun to listen to.
Furthermore, on my second playthrough (already started) I have decided that I am romancing Dorian. I've never done a gay romance in a Bioware game before, but screw it - for the dashing Tevinter and his awesome 'stache, I will expand my horizons! ![]()

Dorian: ...and if not we'll kill everyone! You're good at that!
Inquisitor: What about dessert?
Dorian: Well, I suppose there's time for dessert.
Inquisitor: And coffee?
Dorian: Alright, and a quick cup of coffee. Then we kill everyone!

Dorian was also my first gay romance in a Bioware game, so I know what you mean^^ It's still my favourite romance though, I'm currently doing my second run and I can't seem to get past Dorian^^ Somehow all my male chars get pulled towards Dorian (I even abandonded Cassandra's romance for our lovable Necromancer^^)

At what point does Dorian mention that Trevelyan is related to him? Does he only do this if you are in a romance?
When I first got to Skyhold, after allying with the Templars, my approval was quite low, so after talking about himself I wasn't able to get any further conversations until I had killed a few Venatori. Then it went straight to the letter about Felix, or lack of in this case. That triggered his father's quest and of course the moment we got back from that, Mother Giselle did her approval thing. Anyway, this run we're just good friends but the next time I spoke to him the only option given was to initiate a romance with him (I've not flirted with him at all up to now) or nothing.
So have I missed out on learning about our kinship to one another?

I got it pretty early on, while I was still in Haven. He didn't say anything about it to my female Trevelyan so it's definitely sort of romance related, but the romance doesn't have to be active yet. Maybe you just need to flirt with him a couple of times first? It's also another one of those chats to spoil the whole "Inquisitor" thing, so I'm guessing it's meant to take place after you get to Skyhold.
Edit: I really have no idea what the weapon is supposed to be....it's looks positively unwieldy!

Ha!! Somehow I had totally managed to miss the fact he calls you 'Inquisitor' while still in Haven. XD I just ... didn't notice (it wasn't my first playthrough).
But I did get this dialogue with my male warrior before I'd taken any flirt options, having sided with the mages.

Just popping in to say a thing about sound.
If you play the game on a TV or computer with a nice sound system then this won't apply to you, but if anyone else is like me and just has a set of standard stereo speakers, and also a (somewhat) loud computer fan that contributes white noise, I strongly recommend trying the game with headphones on. I did this recently and the difference was totally amazing. I was able to hear slightly more nuance in some of the voice acting -- a tiny waver here or there -- which really surprised me. British male Inquisitor is also like a million times more sexy sounding, so there's that. Add in a conversation with Dorian and it's just awesome.
Sexy stuff aside, there is also the fun environmental stuff that tends to get lost, like crunching snow and such. There are also a bunch of different UI sounds I've never noticed before.

Ooooh, sounds like you might have coil whine. If it is just the fans, give them a clean or switch out for Noctua fans. I was using my ordinary case fans and the fan noise was annoying, switched to Noctua and...silence. D:
Also, putting on headphones turns the British IQ's voice from meek 18 year old to 'I like it when your voice drops low and it does that thing'.

Sounds like the "we're related" thing is connected to romance, or at least flirting, which is weird. I mean the fact that they are very distantly related is not really relevant to whether or not they have sex. However, it is an interesting bit of trivia that would be shared between friends. It is particularly relevant when Trevelyan is a mage because presumably that might raise their status a bit in Tevinter. You could imagine the snooty Altus saying "You see, we knew he must have Altus blood to be that magically gifted."
This is my first Inquisitor who hasn't so much as fluttered his eyelashes at Dorian, male or female. I thought it would be novel to play him totally straight, so doesn't even think of flirting with the guys. He's sweet on Josephine. Dorian has already made his declaration of unswerving friendship, so I was really expecting him to reveal that bit of gossip next time I went to speak with him. I'm tempted to take the heart icon just to see what happens because, like I say, I've never gone so long without flirting with him at all. Trouble is I'm likely to end up disappointing him terribly if I do and I couldn't do that to my best buddy.

^ If you're past the Mother Giselle scene where he makes his declaration of friendship, I think (not 100% sure!) you might be locked out of the romance at that point, so any flirting might be seen as just the standard flirting (for fun) and you won't have to end up turning him down.
I applaud your willpower in resisting his siren call... or whatever a male siren is.

When he says, "Do you now?" in the post-sex scene with Dorian, I pretty much melt. Also in the Cass romance where he says, "Haven't I?" been paying attention.
[Yes, I crushed badly on my male quizzy, Marcus.

Dorian: I'd be careful with that mirror. Parallel realities can be quite dangerous.
Inquisitor: We've traveled through time and now you're worried about other realities?
Dorian: Alexius and I toyed with the idea. At least until I found the reality where I was Lady Pavus, quite disconcerting when you think about it.
Inquisitor: So you're not Dorian? In an alternate reality, I mean.
Dorian: No, still Dorian. Mother and Father couldn't agree on a name so they chose one that worked for both genders. Certainly better than being Livius or Livia, you can't swing a cat amongst high society in the Imperium without hitting a Livius. So derivative.
