Have to let you know that just for interests sake I clicked on the heart icon.   It wasn't just a flirt option because the message came up "this will start a relationship with Dorian".   However, you then have a get out because initially when you say you've come to talk, he jokes his father must have found a way to bribe you into sending him back.   Then you get another heart icon option with once again the advice "this will start a relationship" just in case you hadn't picked up on that one.

The really odd thing is what follows.   You very coyly say that you want to "Get closer", Dorian basically says okay and comments it could be interesting and that's it.  You just say see you around or something like that.   No intimacy, flirting or goading him into kissing you.   Nor does he say anything approaching "Well that's a surprise" because it really does come from nowhere.     It was the most low key romance initiation ever.   I'm almost tempted to continue with it just because a lot of later conversations are going to be hilarious based on what has gone before.

I wonder, does Dorian think Trevelyan is just really shy?    I can understand him being sweet and sensitive about his feelings and not making a big deal out of the fact that his best friend has just come out to him.    However, that's not really going to fit with the later bedroom seen conversation:

Trev: "I thought you'd never ask"  Really!   When you never gave so much as a hint until a few days ago.

Dorian "I like to play hard to get".   Hardly, when you didn't even know he wanted to get you.

Clearly the slow things down version would fit far better and go with the Dorian quip that "things have been positively glacial by his standards".   I'll say.

Still, that is a save I can explore later.    For now we are best friends and I wait to see if he has any interesting comments to make about my Josephine romance.    If he doesn't then I'll know it was just a Cassandra thing when he appears to stalk us.

Dorian was also my first gay romance in a Bioware game, so I know what you mean^^ It's still my favourite romance though, I'm currently doing my second run and I can't seem to get past Dorian^^ Somehow all my male chars get pulled towards Dorian (I even abandonded Cassandra's romance for our lovable Necromancer^^)

I've abandoned Cass twice now >< I adore her, but I just can't seem to pick her over Dorian.

Just popping in to say a thing about sound.

If you play the game on a TV or computer with a nice sound system then this won't apply to you, but if anyone else is like me and just has a set of standard stereo speakers, and also a (somewhat) loud computer fan that contributes white noise, I strongly recommend trying the game with headphones on. I did this recently and the difference was totally amazing. I was able to hear slightly more nuance in some of the voice acting -- a tiny waver here or there -- which really surprised me. British male Inquisitor is also like a million times more sexy sounding, so there's that. Add in a conversation with Dorian and it's just awesome.

Sexy stuff aside, there is also the fun environmental stuff that tends to get lost, like crunching snow and such. There are also a bunch of different UI sounds I've never noticed before.

Oh wow, I can't imagine the game with those things! So happy you tried it though and noticed, there's so much detail in everything it's great :)

Sounds like the "we're related" thing is connected to romance, or at least flirting, which is weird.    I mean the fact that they are very distantly related is not really relevant to whether or not they have sex.   However, it is an interesting bit of trivia that would be shared between friends.   It is particularly relevant when Trevelyan is a mage because presumably that might raise their status a bit in Tevinter.   You could imagine the snooty Altus saying "You see, we knew he must have Altus blood to be that magically gifted."

This is my first Inquisitor who hasn't so much as fluttered his eyelashes at Dorian, male or female.   I thought it would be novel to play him totally straight, so doesn't even think of flirting with the guys.   He's sweet on Josephine.     Dorian has already made his declaration of unswerving friendship, so I was really expecting him to reveal that bit of gossip next time I went to speak with him.    I'm tempted to take the heart icon just to see what happens because, like I say, I've never gone so long without flirting with him at all.   Trouble is I'm likely to end up disappointing him terribly if I do and I couldn't do that to my best buddy.

I think he will talk about being related with any human non-mage. With mages there is a conversation about being a mage in the circle, he talked about tal-vashot with my qunari, I know he said something to the elves, too.

Or a swarm of them attempting to raid the wine cellar like a bunch of Pikmin.

I've only abandoned her once... Flirting with the woman is like pulling teeth compared to Dorian *gg* Plus, my quizzie always sounds so damned amused every time he's flirting with our handsome Tevinter... Especially the whole conversation about the Quizzie running through Skyhold and everything, where Dorian says the Inquisitor is 'rather strapping'...

Anyway, in other news, I finally found the Flower Crown!!! Man, I've searched ages for that blasted cave in the Emerald Graves (I originally wanted to discover the location on my own, but gave in yesterday and looked it up...) Naturally I gave it to Dorian, but oddly, he doesn't really look that pleased about me giving him a fancy flower crown^^ (Spoilers for image size)

Spoiler

Still, better than my quizzie with it^^

Spoiler

I love his whole 'this ruins my tough-guy' look *rofl* I even put it on Cassandra, nearly died laughing *gg* Thank the Maker I usually play with the helmets toggled off. I could never take them seriously again *gg* Shame though I couldn't put it on the Bull, though I probably would have woken the neighbourhood with frantic giggling^^

And, though this could be considered off-topic (but you guys and gals are probably the only ones here that wouldn't nag at me for not having noticed this earlier); I found this while I was exploring the Western Approach... Anybody able to tell me what that does there and how I can get to it (if that's possible, I tried and failed^^)

(Spoiler for image size)

Spoiler

It's the Holy Grail. Touch it and you go to Camelot which is a silly place not spoken of on these boards.

/jk I have no idea what that is though I've also seen it before, but I've always wondered if it's another easter egg like the flower crown was for so long, or just the detritus of deleted objects in the mad rush before game launch. Western Approach in particular is fairly buggy, after all.

Shame... And I wanted to go to Camelot *lol*

Seriously though, I agree that the Western Approach is the Queen Bee when it comes to bugs (at least in my PT's^^)... Not that I mind though, I like having a good laugh. I just wondered if there's actually a way to reach it and I was just too dumb to find it^^ At least its not that^^ Anyway, thanks for the Info and the quick response *gg*

Just popped in to say that I've realised that everyone is right; the reason I don't get the "we're related" conversation is that I'm a mage so we got the Circle one instead.   Which is rather disappointing because the Circle conversation was brief and boring.    I have noticed that there is a distinct lack of conversation options once the Mother Giselle confrontation has finished if you are on a friendship path, compared with other companions.    If you are friends with Cassandra you can at least ask her advice once you run out of other things to say.   With Sera, Josephine and Vivienne you can ask their opinion of other people.   Admittedly Iron Bull doesn't have a whole lot to say for himself, just sits there in the inn and drinks but he never actually says that I'm his best friend.   You'd think best friends would spend a bit of down time together.   I wouldn't mind chatting to him about casual time in Tevinter because I'm pretty sure he could come up with some really interesting tales.

I was wondering if the programming was messed up a bit and you should get the non kissing option of spending time together, where Dorian suggest you go for a drink, or watch the soldiers, etc, because that is something you could equally do with your best friend as it is with your lover.    I noticed it the first time round with my female Lavellan and now it has cropped up again with my male Trevelyan.    Until we get to the next major plot point, either Adamant or Wicked Hearts, the only option when you click on Dorian is "goodbye".    Actually Trev also keeps getting the start romance option as well since I clearly haven't been locked into Josephine yet, but I've been threatened by Leliana if I mess with her friend's heart.    Does anyone know if Leliana makes good on that if you do?    Not that I'm going to, I'm just curious.

So on the friendship path I spend as little time as possible back at Skyhold since getting back on the road is the only way I get to spend quality time with Dorian.

My favourite Dorian expression is his sultry sneer or sexy glare. He...does it a lot around my inquisitor...In a way, you can excuse it as a drunk face too I guess.

I asked him what he thought of the situation regarding his amulet. Cold sass.

Spoiler

"Hello father. Hoping to blood magic on me again?"

Spoiler

"Eugh. I'm disapproving. Can you see my disapproval???"

Spoiler

"Don't worry, I still love you."

Spoiler

"But drag me into the Fade again and I'll kill you."

Spoiler

"Re...la...tion...ship?"

Spoiler

"I need a drink."

Spoiler

There are many more than this. Strangely enough, I haven't caught a lot of sassy sneers when playing my femquisitor...hmmmm....

Well I fought my duel for Josephine and I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed Dorian didn't notice.   You'd think he'd have something to say on the matter if only to mock me.   I'm beginning to think he was stalking me when I romanced  Cassandra because he definitely mentioned that liaison.    Mind you, to be fair, he may have had other things on his mind since we'd only just got back from Adamant a few days before.   At least now I can safely flirt with him, which means talking to him is so much more interesting.

While back on the road with Varric I picked up on something I hadn't heard before, Dorian has been to Weisshaupt.    Now when and why do you suppose that was?     Nothing in his biography or that of Alexius made any mention of it.   Do you suppose Alexius sent him there to find out if they could suggest a cure for Felix?    Or was this one of his exploits during that mysterious 2 year gap in his CV?    It's not the sort of place you'd expect to find him and he definitely didn't have fond memories of the place.   That's what is so frustrating about Dorian.   You get this little snippets of information that make you curious for more but you never get the chance to find out.    Like the hundred ways to shame your ancestors.    Or his dance with the silk scarves.    I suppose it is left to our imagination but still.

Lol, he actually makes it in-game a fair bit. Man, his lovesick look is really melt-worthy. His communication skills kinda suck sometimes, but when he gives you that look there really can be no doubt about his feelings.

A+ to the cinematic team on that one.

Guys, I have a bit of a sensitive question. I knew Dorian was a heavy drinker, but I was a little shocked how much so on my last game. Romancing him is on my "to-do" list, but alcohol problems/getting drunk's a bit of a sensitive subject. I can't romance Samantha in ME for example because of how drunk she gets in Citadel. Anything in Dorian's romance I should be wary of?

Dorian drinks to drown his sorrows.   When he is finding it difficult to cope with life emotionally, he hits the bottle.   So I like to think that because he becomes so happy in his relationship with the Inquisitor, he has less need for alcohol as an emotional crutch.   Let me stress, he's not an alcoholic, but it is his coping mechanism.     So if you want to romance Dorian, go ahead because his drinking is not going to be a problem or impact on your relationship.    There are times when you will need to be patient with him because his lack of confidence emotionally can lead him into saying things that you may find hard to understand.    If you stick with him, though, it is totally worth it.

A word of warning, if alcohol problems/getting drunk is a bit of a sensitive subject then I'd avoid reading Dorian's biography in WoT2, unless you want to appreciate how far he's come from his troubled past.

Hmmm, no?

You never see him drunk in game.

He probably drank during the Wicked Grace game but since he doesn't end up under the table like Sera , I assume he didn't drink all that much or he can hold his liquor.

While there's a very limited amount of space and resources in games I've always wanted to see something similar to Tales of the Bounty Hunters with our party members. A bunch of little vignettes about each character that uses something like the Wicked Grace scene as a framing device.

Weisshaupt, other than being the home of the Wardens would probably have extensive libraries what with all the various people involved in supporting the Warden's operations.

Okay, I take it all back.   Dorian has mentioned about Josephine.   Not the duel but the fact that she seemed all flushed and flustered the last time he ran into her.   So what I'm wondering now is whether it was just his mind was otherwise engaged initially or the fact that I had flirted with him since the duel.   You see on my Cassandra run I had flirted with him all the way through except when I wanted to avoid triggering his romance.   So I'm wondering if it is the fact that you have shown interest in him that makes Dorian take an interest in who else you are involved with, just to see who you have opted for instead of him.   He's so wonderfully magnanimous about it, it emphasises what a good friend he is.     I've tried using other people in my party this time round but I can't bring myself to leave him out of the line up.   When I tell him how important he is to me, whether as a friend or a lover, it really is the truth.

As for Weisshaupt, I can't see Dorian travelling all that way just to make use of their libraries.   It really is a godforsaken place to travel to and I can't see there being anything better than the Minrathous libraries for the majority of topics except lore specifically related to the Blight.    Which is why I thought the only reason Dorian could have been enticed to go there would be to seek a cure for Felix.      Alternatively, after the episode with his father and the blood magic ritual, I suppose he could have toyed with the idea of joining the Wardens in order to ensure once and for all that he couldn't sire an heir, blood magic or not, but when he saw the reality of life with the Wardens, he decided against it.   He certainly seemed to think well of the Wardens and disapproves of banishing them, in spite of their use of blood magic.    I suppose we'll never know, unless the trouble at Weisshaupt should come up in a future instalment and Dorian is brought back in a cameo role (or the Inquisitor is still involved).

Back with more silly questions.

So, Dorian and I have kissed and I have told Giselle to minder own business. But I never got a formal "this option will begin your romance with Dorian" pop up. Is everything still on track? It certainly looks like it, but I'm not sure since the wiki is a bit vague. Anything else I need to do or is it just a matter of talking to him after story quests now?

And good God,he's really charming. Could sell ice to an Eskimo. I was all set for Cass--sided with the templars and everything--and still couldn't resist.

You have a personal quest with a gift for him to seal the deal.Like every other romances.

I think it's linked to approval and the romance status being on .

I think if your approval isn't high enough you may have to wait a bit for the next part to trigger.  (seem to recall the same thing happened to me when I'd done the Templar path).   Go and kill some Venatori since that usually does the trick.     You ought to get a message from Leliana telling you about Dorian and the merchant, either going up or coming down stairs from Dorian's spot in the library.    In fact it may be you just need to leave Skyhold and return for it to trigger.    So try that first and if it doesn't work then try raising your approval with a spot of Venatori bashing.
