I also suffer from gay man picking between the two gay romances that end up falling for each other. :|

 

My solution to my feels about romancing Iron Bull or Dorian, because I loved them both so bloody much, was to go OT3 head canon all the way and stick my Inquisitor in the middle of a happy Iron Bull & Dorian sandwich. It's basically the only thing I can accept because I've grown to love Dorian just as much as Iron Bull and leaving one or the other out of it alone is just...hard. ;w;

 

Mostly Dorian, because Iron Bull has his chargers so it's like he's already surrounded by family that loves him? Dorian...doesn't really have that. He repeatedly calls the Inquisitor his only real friend, and that's...so many feels that I'm really not prepared to handle properly at the moment. Being Dorian's friend and support while he does something as ambitious as reform Tevinter is so extremely important.

I think part of the problem is that they tried to... overcorrect, I guess, because some people weren't happy with how the Dorian/Iron Bull relationship played out in the base game. It's like in this DLC they were trying to say "No, look, they're totally healthy and happy and sooo in love!" In a way it feels like this is almost a reversal of the base game - whereas before Dorian seemed happier and more open with the Inquisitor and more closed off with IB, he now appears happier and more open with IB and more distanced with the Inquisitor. I think seeing an epilogue slide with the Inquisitor and Dorian happy together would have helped with this weird feeling of distance.

 

And I know it's really silly of me to feel this way, but I do wish they'd kept "amatus" exclusive to the player romance. NPC romances can be great but there's nothing wrong with keeping the player romance special in some way.

 

So... I don't know. It's disappointing that it feels like they prioritised the NPC romance over the player romance, but it's not going to keep me from romancing Dorian in possible future male Inquisitor playthroughs. Maybe I'll try a Qunari next time since Dorian seems to prefer them, body type wise.

Some thoughts:

The "political" situation is different with Bull than with the Inquisitor.
Even if you have disbanded the inquisition, your inquisitor is still the "holy-something-from-the-south" and this is enough to scare a lot of people in Tevinter.
Bull doesn't have this problem.
He's a Tal-Vashoth, true, but he's not the guy who raised an army to defeat Corypheus and kicked the Venatori out of the south (amongst other things).
That can also partially explain the difference of the tone between the two epilogues.

Also, in both case, Dorian is not trying to hide his relationship.
Dorian's trying to protect his relationship (and it's not an easy task when your lover is as famous as the inquisitor).
The Inquisitor's epilogue slide says that the people around Dorian know about his lover, they even say he is his greatest strength.
Sadly, I think it's difficult to show the inquisitor and Dorian close together because the inqui can be human, elf, dwarf or qunari.

Well, I don't say that everything is perfect. The Inquisitor will have a lonely period even if he joins the Red Jenny, even if if he's still working with his inner circle, even with the crystal-magic-phone...but on the other hand I was pleased to see Dorian so strong and confident and my Inquisitor so badass and resilient.

After completing Dorian walkthrough I wanted something happier, so I loaded Sera's save, but it looks like Bull and Dorian hooked up in this and I brought them together. Damn, it felt like punch in the gut when he calls him amatus And they have more romantic banter then Inky and Dorian too

I prefer the Solas romance in many ways...you're the first person who wins Solas heart, so you're definitely a very special woman to him, someone he's never met before. He couldn't even think of finding someone like you. The romance with him is so intense and dramatic, you even meet him in your dream... but he has his own secrets and then, he leaves you without anwers and you have to find him, get your answers, I really like his storyrelevance. I wish Dorian would have had the same great story arc...But I don't think they'll ever make a homosexual character as important as Morrigan or Solas. :-/

Yeeeah, its a pity your relationship with dorian doesn't really stand out from his relationship with bull at all. They're even more playful and cutsie with each other than with the inquisitor. Like it seems like they've been together for two years but with the inquisitor its pretty much the same as it was in the base game,  except now you can tell dorian you love him in banter. Which was nice.

I've just begun playing Trespasser and I haven't got past the very beginning due to work, so I've been too afraid to take a peak behind any spoiler tags. Thus pardon me, if the following regarding Dorian's romance has already been discussed:

My Inquisitor was too supporting of Dorian's dream to go change his homeland for me to ever acknowledge you can actually talk Dorian into staying with the Inquisition. I only learned this after finishing the game by going through choices in the Keep.

So apparently a romanced Dorian, who stayed, greets Inquisitor in the first of his scenes by stating he's been away a month. He refers to you as Amatus and you can reply to him with a romance dialogue choice and the two kiss.
But for me, Dorian greeted me by saying he doesn't remember when we last met and his dialogue is more friendly than loving. The romance choice in the dialogue is not there and they don't kiss either. The romance starts to play normally after you've talked with Cyril and triggered Dorian's second scene. Cassandra also spoke about the romance beforehand.

Was this a bug or does it always happen when Dorian leaves for Tevinter rather than stays with Inquisitor? Does this choice have any other consequences? I'd rather avoid spoilers, so a yes/no will be sufficient.

Okay I just finished and I genuinely could not be happier for Dorian.

He is exactly  where I'd always hoped he'd wind up as a person. Confident in the fact that he is worthy of love enough that he can leave and know it's still there, that he can redeem his homeland and NOT have to give up on the Inquisitor in any way. That he could have both because like L'Oreal he's worth it.

 

Some observations/comments:

 

Dorian isn't sappy. He is occassionally but rarely overtly so. For instance he doesn't display concern for Bull's safety to his face, he displays that to the Inquisitor instead. In the same way he won't outright tell the Inquisitor that he doesn't want him in the same place that just killed his father. It also helps that I played an elf. Cuz I imagine them and a qunari would have the biggest targets on their back in the Imperium. I suppose if you're playing a human mage it's gonna sting a bit because a powerful, noble human mage is going to be as welcome in the Imperium as anyone conceivably could be.

 

That was quite the kiss after the discussion about him leaving.

 

The Adoribull pairing. First of all I don't buy one soul mate forever and you aren't allowed to be happy with anyone else ever. It just doesn't jive for me. So I'm fine with them as a pairing. I got the fluff I crave in this DLC, Dorian in the Deep Roads talking about a (second?) honeymoon and wyvern down (how would that even work?) pillows, the raw anguish in his voice when it looked as if the Inquisitor might die. There could have been a bit more, maybe a last conversation or something but I imagine that's a DLC wide thing. Except maybe for Solas but **** that guy.

 

The one issue I kinda have is that there was an ever so slight vibe of the setup between Bull and Dorian not being totally kosher that's utterly absent in the DLC. The pairing went from a wee bit troubling to saccharine sweet. I'm not complaining exactly but it kinda came out of nowhere from my PoV. Dunno if I should ascribe it to the writers responding to Adoribull, Weekes as lead or whether this was set out from the start.

 

The Inqusitor is still  dying. Not a lot of people seem to mention that but Solas consistently mentions that he's only slowing the effects/the Inquisitor should enjoy what time they have (though he might just be talking about destroying the world with that one) left. Seems we're still gonna break Dorian's heart.

 

And lastly: Dorian in DA4 !!!OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ!!! (assuming there is one)

  My point of view about the fate of the Inquisitor is ...yeah the dev put the possibility of dying from anchor residue.

Maybe they aren't sure yet if they want the Inqui or not in some DA4 as a npc or whatever.

Anyway the next game might come in 3 or 4 years...so it's the time for fluffy headcanon FTW!

 

I think my elf will blow a fuse after a couple of years of secret meeting and just propose to Dorian.

Dorian will have enough power in Tevinter to pull that off.

So they will go in the South and get married with all the Inquisition friends.

I don't imagine they'll ever lead a normal couple life ...those two are too idealist to stand idle for a year.

But they'll make it work somehow.

 

Oh and my Inqui will find an elven orphan and adopt him/her.I doubt he'll ask Dorian before ...but I think my elf will want to be a father and will feel the need to pass on some elven culture to his child.His own new version of elven culture.

I imagine Dorian will take on some apprentices, young rebel mages just like him.With the level of assassination in Tevinter , he might bring in an orphan, too.Who knows.

 

Blablabla , love and hugs , and fight against evilz and corruption , making the world a better place.

Pushing Solas and several nasty magisters down a cliff , more love and hugs , and kisses and nugs.

I agree with this, but I think some of the disappointment comes if they're able to express certain things or act in certain ways that aren't available to the player, not simply the mere possibility of the relationship (part of this is just the nature of not having to deal with player choice, but I still think it's fine to feel a bit bummed by it).

First, does Dorian always make the choice to leave for Tevinter? There's no way to influence him to stick around? It was abrupt and confusing because I thought he'd agreed to stay during our conversation at the end of DAI.

Secondly, does his epilogue slide always say the same thing about becoming a notable magister with Maeveris and occasionally meeting up with his lover in this south? Are there any alternative outcomes for that slide?

Well, Sera can get married to the Inquisitor. I'm not sure if that extends to some sort of recognized arrangement or if it's just a personal thing, but I guess it's something that can happen in at least some fashion now.

But yes, it felt a bit strange, and also kind of makes the actual meeting with him (where he tells you he's leaving) a bit harsh (though she apparently asks most everyone that, and some of the romances can take worse turns than Dorian's).

I'm hoping to get some help so I won't have to play through the whole darn thing again just to hear that exchange.

I had to take Cass out of my team to get that banter to trigger. I never did the first time but luckily I did have a save just beforehand so I tried running through again, then changing the team around. Only worked when I changed Cass for Blackwall.
