I think Dorian is great, but not because he's gay. I think it's a little ridiculous that Gaider makes such a big deal out of this. We already had Cortez, this isn't new.

I don't think David is doing anything other than speaking honestly when he shares that... as opposed to some sort of "PR statement."  It's something exciting for David, and the only person that is really qualified to say that is David himself.

I think Viv is quite possibly a KE but yeah lets not derail.

IDK, I assume he knows something of spirits but Solas is meant to be our fade expert so I would have guessed he would be more likely to know something.

Seeing as how Dorian was stated to play with the undead he'll likely be our necromancer. Solas is a fade expert so he'd be a rift mage. That leaves Knight Enchanter for Viv.

Cortez wasn't a companion. It's a pretty big deal for a lot of gay people to see an actual gay companion.

If I remember right, David's also gay as well, so it seems like he's putting a lot of himself into this character, so I can imagine why he's a character David would really like to write......not trying to imply a self-insert character or anything though.

Congrats to everyone to finally have (likely, even if not fully confirmed) a full companion gay LI :).
I'll probably romance him in a later playthrough.

It's not exactly the same thing.

Someone should post that fan art with Vivienne and Dorian banter, it seems very relevant right now. I'll look for it but I can't remember who did it.

I just read the interview. Happy to know Dorian is gay and will probably be an option for one of my Inquisitors.

I'd just like to point out that I didn't think Dorian was or is stereotypically gay.   It's just that for weeks now people on here have been saying that he had to be gay based on some perception on how a gay guy would look, which is why I said the fact they turned out to be right was disappointing because I don't think his look or character is defined by his sexuality.     He is just a guy who prefers guys to girls.    The rest, the flamboyance, the sense of style, his passion for his cause, etc, would be there if he were straight.   Or am I wrong about this?

I also notice there is a bit of an about turn about the attitude to homosexuality in Thedas.   Previously we were told that people may think it a bit odd but there is no actual prejudice against gay people.   Now there seems some hint that in addition to his views on the conduct of his fellow Magisters, the fact he was gay added to the alienation from his family (or did I read that wrong?)     Funnily enough I raised this issue in a thread of my own only a week or so back, when I asked when it might be an issue in Thedas.

Anyway the latest news would also seem to confirm that sharp ears were correct and the son of Alexius, whose throat Lelianna cuts, was someone for whom Dorian previously cared, in other words was either once his lover or someone he would have liked to have been.

They sort of "clarified" Tevinter's attitude to sexuality specifically in World of Thedas, which I guess now we can see was excellent foreshadowing, though I don't think it had been mentioned much before that.

I quoted it before, but it boils down to most nations fundamentally not having an issue with same-sex relationships, except for noble houses that prioritise political marriages and the creation of heirs. I imagine Tevinter might be more hung up about this, because - to speculate - magic and magical children might be powerful currencies of power. In that respect, it's plausible that their views on homosexuality are more negative than the rest of Thedas.

As for the theory about Alexius' son Felix, I think it's a fine idea. We'll just have to wait and see!

Just read the interview Dorian sounds awesome

so he is just gay right? not race-gated or something like that?

I'm probably going for a gay qunari inquisitor so he's definitely on my "list"

In fact, he's restricticted to male Qunari to max out the rebel Tevinter.

I think a lot of people, myself included, were guessing he might be gay based on what we know about companion sexualities so far. Cole was out, Sera was a lesbian so it was unlikely that Solas (the other elf) would also be gay, IB was essentially confirmed bi, Varric is confirmed to be into women. That left Blackwall and Dorian, and well, if you're going to make the first gay male companion in a Bioware game, you don't want a romance that will necessarily end tragically from the get go, which kinda put a damper on Blackwall's chances.

We haven't got the whole origin story yet, maybe next season.

As for Dorian, I think it's maybe a bit too far to think every character will naturally be a reflection of the writer - part of their skill has to be in writing characters that are nothing like them. But I do think David likes writing snark, so it's exciting to see what he'll do with a magister.

(Aside from the relationship implications or even Dorian's personality, I'm just really overjoyed to have a powerful magister on the team.)

You know I remember David gaider said in his blog ,we will see someone who's more like him in the future.

And to give an idea he said he's a bit of a mix between Alistair and Morrigan.

And reading the Dorian interview , I was thinking about Gaider speaking up for the gay/bi community+ women ...and he got death threat and everything. So I'm feeling the idealist who try to protect himself with snark is pretty close to Gaider IRL.

He is only confirmed as being gay. It doesn't say if he's an LI (but it seems likely) and no race gates have been clarified so far, so he could be, if he's an LI.

Late to the party because I had work to do this morning, but OH MY GOD.

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU GUYS.

I'm seriously so freaking happy for everyone who wanted Dorian to be gay! I haven't even bothered breaking out the "If You're Upset Please Eat Me" ice cream, I'm so giddy over it!

(In other news, I'm also a little giddy over the fact that I wasn't too terribly far off the mark about Vivienne and Dorian's relationship. God, I'm dragging them with me at least half the time, there's no getting around it!)

I think a lot of people were basing more on context and elimination than that Dorian just "looked gay". I don't know why some people assumed that was the only reason people guessed he would be.

An older post from David's tumblr:

"I think, as we start getting into the concepting for the characters, there’s a social dynamic where a writer seems more keen on someone and the others start to back off without really being obvious about it. By the time I get to divvying up the list, it’s more or less already been settled. One of the characters I’ve written for DAI was like that—it was the sort of story I wanted to write ever since I started with BioWare, and everyone knew that, and thus I didn’t ever need to claim it outright. It was simply acknowledged that I was going to write that person, come hell or high water."

Could part of the male wrath *potentially* be that the ONLY non-human female option turned out to be lesbian? Plus, if you looked at it from sheer numbers, there were only 4 female potential LI options to even start with, compared to 8 male potential LI options. From that point of view they really seemed to get the short end of the stick....especially after it was confirmed Leliana was not a LI. That dropped them down to 3. And then to 2 once it was confirmed Sera was lesbian. At least from the potential male LI pool, 8 is more to work with, there is the impression of inequality (which they are probably not used to). (giving benefit of the doubt here)

And from a straight female perspective...

We possibly have Solas, Cullen, Varric, IB, Blackwall to chose from.* (with me thinking that Varric and Blackwall probably wont be romances)

None of them seem to be as cool as Dorian (which is fine, I had already planned if he was a LI and m/m I would be playing male characters). Plus from companions....the straight female player potentially gets 1 human companion to chose from, and if Blackwall isn't a romance....the straight female player gets NO human companion. (romance an NPC? Not as fun to me if you can't schlep them around with you). Which would balance out the guys geting no non-humans I guess

I'm also glad that BW is giving characters *set* sexualities, instead of 'player-sexual' (although I liked that also).

Perfect math (and I mean it!).

First of all, it means, that indeed we are getting 1 lesbian, 1 gay, 2 bi (male and female), 1 straight male, 1 straight female. (Other wise there will be not enough females for straight males, and we can not allow that, can we?)

Second, since Cullen is already not gay, he is confirmed LI and he only was interested in females so far (means nothing in DA but at least some hint) - this is all we get for straight women.

Third, there is IB, who sleeps with anything strong enough - so, male "bi" is known too. And unless this is the case of promised racial restrictions - this is what straight females get.

Now, should we indeed get that racial restriction, there is a chance for someone else. Most likely Beauty King - Solas. And Btw, males get one more option - Scribe girl.

to be fair not all of thedas agrees on everything. And considering the lore about Tevinter the main problem people would have with his sexuality is that he doesn't just marry a Mage woman to have more magical children into an old family line, and have all the gay sex he wants with slaves.

Dorian probably doesn't even keep slaves.

THE SCANDAL!
