The Mattock or Harrier are generally my weapon of choice. As a Vanguard player, I do like to get up close, but there are some enemies that I typically avoid melee range with, like banshees. I think the Mattock is one of the best for having considerable punch up close as well as being a great ranged weapon.
At lvl X, either gets you the full 200% cool down which is a major plus for me.
I find energy drain to be one of the most useful abilities to equip my vanguard with. It's pretty handy against those turrets.
I've a loong shot until I can put Energy Drain on my Shep...I'm still in Palaven. And for that I'd even prefer taking Tali with me and Sabotaging them. That'd take care of the problem by itself.
Also, I don't know if I'd prefer Flare as my Bonus power. That way I'd have a ranged way of debilitating those tightly packed groups I wouldn't dare to Novacharge...just before Novacharging them 
I'll give it a try. Not that any other Bonus Power tempts me, anyway...
Have in mind that I've just "discovered" Novacharge...(meaning that I finally tried it once)...and I love it ^^
