I couldn't see a topic on this, but that may be me being a fool.

Anyway once you've taken a fortress you can change its usage. So, Inquisitor what will you focus on? Trade? Military strengthEspionage? Or will you use a mix of all three?

Personally, I will probably be playing quite ruthlessly my first playthrough, so might stick to mostly military with some espionage and trade when necessary.

After a fortress is taken you also get to take part in some sort of "strategic metagame". I don't know much on this topic so feel free to add to this, but to quote the PC gamer article "The ones we were shown involved rebuilding monuments, opening paths to new areas, and establishing resource-gathering buildings to help with your crafting and alchemy."

Assuming those are just a handful of things you can do, what would you like to see as other metagames? And which ones do you think you will use the most?

I would like to see a training based metagame, where whatever troops you do have can learn new skills or improve current ones. Or maybe a library that helps with your knowledge of different factions or even the geography of a region that would grant you a more effective military presence in that area.

Discuss away!

At the moment I think I might have a mix of the three different kinds of forts. Also I think I heard that there were going to be more ways you could customise your forts besides the three ways already mentioned (I cant remember where I heard this though, so don't quote me on this).

I think this fort mechanic has a lot of potential and could help add to re-playability too. It would be interesting if some quests became easier to complete if you had more military strength and others easier if you had greater trading connections. That combined with the different races the Inquisitor can be could make for a lot of different outcomes to many quests. I'm looking forward to hearing more on the subject.

What I would love is if we see the Inquisition in future games and it could come in a variety of different forms depending on our choices. For instance if we built loads of espionage forts the Inquisition is a highly secretive society using assassinations and spying to achieve its goals or if we focused on military forts it becomes a military force powerful enough to challenge nations etc, etc. The same could also be done for its morality. Depending on your choices in DAI the Inquisition could become anything from a benevolent order, protecting the innocent or a merciless force to be feared, destroying anything which challenges it. I could understand if Bioware doesn't though as there would be loads of potential Inquisitions to make.

It'll depend on where the said fortress is located. Something that will strengthen that certain region. As for new game mechanics, I'd pretty much love to take my men with me to battle. Like some sort of tactical battle, I don't know. It'd be nice to see my/our Inquisitor actually leading the Inquisition army into battle, on whatever way possible.

You know, I think that at some point, the game will somehow have a "Battle of Denerim" style of battle. Our characters charge and we get to choose which force reinforces us.

That would be incredible. You could honestly make the Inquisition the most feared order in the whole of Thedas that way or the most beloved. Like you say though, that would be a crazy amount of work to do for DA4 and beyond. Cool idea though. We can dream, eh?

I'm hoping for a huge battle too, the new engine should be able to handle some pretty epic stuff so that could definitely be real possibility. Cass looks to be leading a force in the trailer, so that's something  :D

To be honest I was a little underwhelmed by the battle of Denerim mainly because it was fairly small scale, gameplay wise. Hopefully the new engine will allow us to fight in a massive scale battle at the end. Maker that would be epic. B)

Based on what I got from that trailer, and apparently some others, it looks like she's attacking a Grey Warden base. The gate got destroyed by a battering ram, the catapults loads are enflamed(if you watch carefully when Cassandra leads the charge you will see two catapults firing fire ammunition). You might already know that, but I felt like pointing it out because I'm trying to kill time. Thanks for reading

The real question is why. Poor Wardens. I guess they weren't playing ball so the Quisi sent Cass to deal with them?

I feel like we're derailing this topic. FORTS. I want all the forts..

Hopefully we'll be able to chose how to besiege other forts. If we have military forts we can build siege weapons, If we have espionage forts we can sneak in, if we have commerce forts we can bribe the guards to lower the gates, etc, etc.

Yeah... Going back on topic, I similarly hope that there won't just be three types of fortresses. Also, if you look at the 30 minute-ish demo thingy, you will see that your army salutes you as you pass by. That's pretty awesome.

The possibilities of conquering an entire hold. Now, I really can't wait for the release day.

So back on topic, does anyone think we will have resources to gain from (and use on) forts besides money?

I really think we do, based on Enchant's post anyway.

If we could use resources on crafting and alchemy, why not on the keep itself, right?

Yeah hope so. I would love for them to have a lot of uses. Would make the game a lot more dynamic.

Any idea what these resources will be? I think I remember gas being collected as a resource in the pax demo.

Assuming the map is West Ferelden and Orlais mostly..how many forts do you think there could be?

If I were to say any resources, it would be pure guess. Remember, way back on Awakening, Wade had us on a quest to find rare ores and what not. I think those would be a start.

I think there would be like 3-6 on Ferelden and 8-10 on Orlais. Pure guess.

Anyway, I need to go for now. It's 5 AM on where I am and I have a lot of things that needs doing. Thank you both for occupying me for the time being. I'll get back as soon as I can.

That rings a bell for me too. Could be anything? Building resources, particularly if a fort is near a mine? Armour and weapon materials, more interesting artefacts and precious items perhaps. There's a lot of stuff they could include.
