Seeing less of the Lady Inquisitor, while seeing more of her.

Another thread reminded me about something in the Official Guide

There are a total of 5 picures of FemHawke in the entire thing.  There are 5 of DudeHawke, including concept art and other pretties, by page 11.

And one of the 5 picures of FemHawke is this one:

IMG_20140317_133939.jpg

Now, OK, you want to show that removing armour leads to underwear.  Fine, understandable.  Important to know, really.  But you use DudeHawke for pretty much everything else, and then just happen to decide that it's FemHawke you want to turn into a lingerie model?!  You under-represent the female version of the character in the marketing materials anyhow, and when she does appear she just happens to be near-naked 20% of the time?

Come on Bioware; you talk a good game about equality and not alienating non-traditional players.  And I think you mean it.  This is a no-brainer; use the Lady Inquisitor more in your Guide, and try to have her dressed at least as often as Lord inquisitor is dressed.  I'm not asking for equal opportunity nudity, exactly, but when you use the image of the Lady inquisitor, do it in a way that doesn't look like cheap titillation and male fanservice.  I know that creating art with a diverse range of characters takes more time, but failing to do it leads to false steps like this.

Yeah, that photo is just... awkward. She's standing next to her sister and mother for goodness' sake. :P

Good on ya for making this thread. I'm a little embarrassed on behalf of whoever created that particular guide.

I would cast more blame on Piggyback more than Bioware for this. All a game company does is give the guide makers the information. Things like pictures and art are usually up to the book makers themselves.

Not gonna lie, I laughed so hard when i saw this pic. I didn't expect this, not from Bioware especially.. so few pics and one of them happened to show her with her underwear.

We know she has THE body (damn) but there was no need to show us that we can remove our char's clothes. Or you could do the same with dudehawke, you know.

All you had to do was just write that we have this option as well. :P

(bioware has a serious fascination with underwears tbh)

Interesting, didn't know this.

Bioware also writes the brief for the publisher.  Bioware can provide concept art with a range of characters, and mandate that the choices players can make are reflected in the marketing materials.  And Bioware can call out Piggyback, or Prima, when this sort of thing gets through.  I don't care who is to blame.  I think it can be done better.

Isn't this a bit...weird to be hung up on?

You're complaining about a strategy guide made by a third party for their choice of pictures. I mean, I could see if the book was filled with wrong information, or was written by bioware exclusively, but ths seems more like an issue you'd want to take up with the publisher more then with bioware.

Wow. That is freaking hilarious, and sad at the same time.

If they had to show the underwear, why not dude Hawke? Or, why not both of them?

Honestly, the lack of female Inquisitor and the fact that she hasn't been shown IMO is because they are fussing too much over her appearance and trying to make her attractive/sexy. Look at male Inquisitor. You can barely see his face. Why not show femquisitor covered from head to toe in badass armor in a similar manner.

My advice:  Show off her strength and badassery, and worry less about giving her pretty face and hot body.

Yeah.

But still. Isn't this like rallying for more female horse carriage drivers. Yes it would bring in more equality, but the business itself is so small and dying I don't see this being any sort of significant victory for women to be proud of.

Also, I thought they'd been showing off the female inquisitor in a lot of concept art, particularly the qunari concept art.

Agreed!

Aaaaand show only one sad photo of male PC standing naked next to his family. For a change.  :D Just to, ya know, drive home the point that that was freaaaaakin' weird.

Honestly, the only person who should be half naked in DA:I is Iron Bull, since he's already been half naked in every image we've seen of him. And it's for practical reasons too. It must be impossible to find shirts that large... plus the horns, can't forget those. Anything that isn't a button-up is impossible to wear.

Yes, Bull shall be perpetually half-naked at all times.

LOL I just thought of this:  I bet the people at Piggyback said "Let's make sure it's a shot with all women because otherwise it would be too sexual!  Kudos to us for our gender sensitivity!!"

Though replace Aveline, Bethany and Leandra with Anders, Fenris and Carver and it might be even stranger  :P

That's not how the publishing industry works.  I write for a living, and the work I do is, although it's in a different field (technical writing) done under the same conditions as third-party publishers for software companies.  They contract me to write a piece, using information and material they have provided.  I write it, and submit it, and they suggest changes.  The editing process happens.  Eventually, when they are happy, I turn the work in and get paid.  And they own it.  If there are legal questions, moral questions, questions of fact, errors, addenda, what have you, it's all on them.  The contracts we sign at the beginning state that the work belongs to them, not me, after handover. That protects me and ensures that they retain their IP.

Bioware provides Prima, or Piggyback with not only information, but materials and a brief on how they expect those materials to be used.  Prima does the work, but Bioware tells it what work to do.

You don't think it's important, and that's your prerogative.  But in the larger context of inclusiveness in game marketing, it's a small step but, I think, one worth taking. The Guide is a de facto form of advertising at the point of sale, as well as being a contributor to how women are seen in games, and as gamers.  How many people flick through the Guide while deciding whether they will buy the game?  How many of them might be encouraged by an array of bad-assed gorgeous female characters?  How many will be put off if the only female image they happen to glance at looks like the one above?

^^ Hmm. Yeah.

And also... probably not the best idea to go into a thread and say, for whatever reason, that a group of people's issues with something doesn't matter. :P

The "females must be sexy" thing is the reason ill probably be disappointed with the fem qunari, the male will look badass like qunari should while the female will likely look mostly like a gray skinned human with massive breasts like the comic version.

I do love the way Bethany, Aveline and Leandra all seem to be awkwardly avoiding looking at Hawke.
