I've been playing Dragon Age 2 a great deal recently. This got me think about the Inquisitor's family. Since we are given a family name, what are the chances we will see a member of the inquisitor's family and will our appearance affect the way they look in a similar manner to DA 2 or is the family name just a passing thought.

I know there is no Origin story but something must tie the Inquisitor to their family name. What do you think that thing will be? Or do you think the family name will be insignificant?

If the Inquisitor has a sibling like Bethany, sure. If he has a sibling like Carver, hell no.

This. Especially for a Vashoth mage I would want some glimmer of my background. But how do you think they will do it without Origin stories?

Well, for starters, even with the changing appearances in DA2, my PC always looks adopted. Ever played a redheaded/blonde Hawke? Yeah. It was even worse in Origins, which is why the family-less Mahariel and Surana were my favourites.

And, depending on how old your character's family is, it restricts how old your character can plausibly be.

I also just prefer orphan protagonists.

It's not something I'll get angry about being included, but after DA2 I'd rather not.

If anything it seems the return of race options means family may be implied but unlikely to be shown in detail.

Yea, like revealing that someone hired some crows to go after you, only to find this information out the second you have an arrow going through your back.

I jest, but this could make for some interesting story telling or it can end up badly. If they do it right revealing bits and pieces that tie into the mystery of the story, I'm all for that. However, if they do it wrong, I'll be one of the first to say they should of simply went with an Origin story. My fear is that despite the race you chose the story will simply be another Fable hero/villan type story which I have not known Bioware to tell.

I guess, only time will tell when it either shapes into the dreaded beast or pleasant forest creatures.

This is also the first time the character will have multiple surnames in a voiced game. I'm interested in how that will play out, since constantly being called His/Her Eminence, even by our companions is gonna be weird...so I wonder if the surnames will actually be said/used like 'Hawke' was in DA2.

I kind of wish we had origins in DA: I ,though I fully get why we won't. With so many backstories, adding each family in a impactful way seems like a strain on resources, so I'm guessing they will avoid it if they can :(

Hmm... I don't know how our family will be brought up, but the dwarf surname especially implies our heritage/family is of some significance.  I'm actually very excited not knowing how we'll discover the "origins" of our character.  The role player in me wants to control and own everything about my character while the book nerd in me wants to explore and discover it as the story unfolds.  Eeeep, so much excitement.

It doesn't matter to me if there's family or not but if there is, I hope that your Inquisitor looks don't determine the way your family looks. I always had to make my Hawke look pretty much the same in each play through because some of the other different options always made Bethany and Carver look very ugly to me. I don't want ugly siblings!

Possibly. Since they will be Tal'vasoth. Kossith outside of the Qun may have adopted the standard Family Unit like the rest of Thedas.

DA 2, for all its flaws, had a very interesting mechanic with Hawkes family, among other cool things. Originally I greatly preferred Bethany, but Carver grows so much more as a character if made into a warden. And as I replayed the game, I started feeling Leandras pain and wished there was a way to keep the twins both alive. Their banter would have been a joy to see.

I think having family members in your party in future games would be something to consider. It's funny how attached I get to Rica, Shianni, the twins, Feargus, etc. It would be cool to have a bit of family interaction in Inquisition dependant on race and/or class selection.

I think this enters in the race specific content. Might happen, but I don't think that it will happen for all the races.  As I see it, the dwarf has the biggest chance of something like this happenning to him/her or at least have an unic event because he's/she's a Cadash.

There may be a chance we will find a relative. Perhaps not with all origins, but a few I think will. It would make sense too, seeing how you're trying to raise nations to fight for you. In the case of the Dalish elves, you might have family with a strong tie to the leaders of the Dalish. This might make it easier for you to recruit them, but they can ask you seeing how you're family they want to have land of their own.

I'd rather not have family getting involved. Besides the "I look adopted" complaints that will inevitably arise, the impending end of the world doesn't exactly down like the ideal time for the guy intended to save the world to scurry back home for a family dinner. Besides, I like the idea of a more "fill in the blank" background, especially with how head-canon-y I get. Depending on how the Dalish origin plays out, I might end up with a third sibling to my Surana / Sketch dynamic. Yay nameless apostate casanova dad!

I do hope our bakcgrounds will include personalized content, whether it's our family, friends, nemesis', gear, lore, quests, whatever. Though to be fair, I take that to be a given.

It turns out that all the possible PCs are actually adopted. You'll be raised by a jolly lady named Bertha who while not a mage understands magic to the point that it somehow explains mage backgrounds. Sorry to disappoint you all.

I've seen names for each of the races. Trevelyan for humans, Lavellan for elves, Cadash for dwarves, and Adaar for Kossith. I'm not sure if we'll be called by these like Hawke was but I'd assume so. Personally I'd enjoy seeing some of our family. I've also heard that origins may be by class and not race but I haven't seen much on it.

There are no are no different origin stories in DAI, our origin is fixed and will remain the same unless you meant backgrounds then yes they will play out differently than the previous games but they aren't origins which were scrapped for good.

It's possible that additional content in our backgrounds could include family or clan members and friends, which could possibly include Shale in the dwarven one but who knows.

I don't think it will be extremely significant in terms of how the world views you but eventually we'll make our surnames more renowned and create new legends for those who have existing lore and new legends that will bring our history and create legends for those who have none by the end of the game according to the devs.

This. Especially for a Vashoth mage I would want some glimmer of my background. But how do you think they will do it without Origin stories?

We'll get much more than a glimmer of our backgrounds, the content in the backgrounds have more content than the previous games beyond what we've seen previously according to the devs, and where our characters come from will be revealed during the opening sequence and the early hours of DAI since our backgrounds will give us different reasons for being at opening sequence and give us concerns and motivations for being the inquisitor.

They will release some information and some of the background stories at some point.

We may get some of this, we can fully explore them in game if we choose to do so, this will put us in a unique position to learn more about the lore, cultures and to an unknown degree more about the Qunari.

Luke K

Um we haven't scrapped the backgrounds, so much as the races become the backgrounds so uh if your choosing an elf you'll have a particular background. It's more in the way we did backgrounds for Shepard, here's a blurb where the backgrounds come from and that'll from the content going foward.

So instead of playing it, you get a so that's were we come from, you'll experience some of the stuff and decide how you relate to that. Those are names we hand picked because some of them have an history and some of them will have one by the time we're done.

A little later on in the podcast he talks more about the backgrounds after being asked if we can learn more about the Qunari.

Luke Kristjansen

Uh to a degree, all of the racial options have content unique to them that deals with their specific concerns and place in the setting.

So um as a Qunari character you will be placed in a, you will, your backgrounds will tie into, putting you in a position as the player where you can learn more about the race and lore.

It's not just about oh this character knows a bunch of stuff you don't because that's no fun, sort of like your given your party a bunch of stuff that you don't actually know which doesn't make sense and makes you feel bad. It's almost like your off standing in the weeds i'm just putting....

Um so the backgrounds will have content that will allow you to explore them further and have more content than what currently exists beyond what we've done previously.

So if we choose to do so we can get a lot of additional content that will put us in place to learn more, depending on your race and class combinations and gender we'll get more reactivity like if your playing as a Qunari or even more so a female warrior version which the devs say will come up along with the other stuff they said about them.

Anyway like I mentioned before the content may include family and or clan members, but they haven't said to much on that front just yet.
