There are no are no different origin stories in DAI, our origin is fixed and will remain the same unless you meant backgrounds then yes they will play out differently than the previous games but they aren't origins which were scrapped for good.
Whats the difference between background and origin in this case? We'll be finding out where our character originates from, we just wont play it out.
I've seen names for each of the races. Trevelyan for humans, Lavellan for elves, Cadash for dwarves, and Adaar for Kossith. I'm not sure if we'll be called by these like Hawke was but I'd assume so. Personally I'd enjoy seeing some of our family. I've also heard that origins may be by class and not race but I haven't seen much on it.
Will the name Trevelyan apply to a human mage as well?

I prefer my characters to be a blank slate. My favourite Origins stories are the mage and dalish elf ones for this reason, With no family to compare them to I don't feel like I have to make them look/act in a certain way, neither do I feel like I had to care about them.
I did not like Hawke's family. Most of my playthroughs were as a mage because I really really loathe Bethany. Carver wasn't much better but he is slightly more likeable as a warden than Bethany is, ever. Leandra irritated me quite a bit as well.
I didn't even realise Bethany/Carver had their appearances changed because I swear they always looked the same for all my Hawkes. All my very adopted looking Hawkes. I usually ended up purposely making them look more like their siblings to make it a bit less odd.
If it's for the sake of relevant heritage then fine, I guess it can be interesting (I did enjoy the dwarf noble origins story). But please no more annoying siblings like Bethany and Carver. Not unless I can leave them to rot in the deep roads again.
Pfft... His/Her family name is Inquisitor. Just like Shepard's first name was Commander.
Isn't the dwarf inquisitor related to shale? Maybe we'll run into her.
I treat the dwarf inquisitor being a distant relation of shale, as little more than a easter egg and nothing more.
I like the name Cadash for my dwarf Inquisitor. His name will be Cole Cadash. Get it? Coal. ![]()

It would have to be pretty distant - how old is Shale again?
I remember in Mass Effect there was a side quest, and it was different for each origin you chose. Like, if you chose spacer, you got to visit your mother; if you chose colonist, you talked to a girl who survived the raid on your colony; if your were Earthborn, I think your old gang asks for your help or something. So maybe they'll do something similar in Inquisition.
I hope so, anyway. I like to be reminded that my PC had a life before the start of the story.
I really hope that at least some backgrounds will come with family members.
I'd also like to see different starting companions for each background. Like a friend or familymember that you could also run into later in the game (like Gorim for example).
I'm mostly hoping backgrounds will be similar to origins just without the playable starting stories.
Well, for starters, even with the changing appearances in DA2, my PC always looks adopted. Ever played a redheaded/blonde Hawke? Yeah. It was even worse in Origins, which is why the family-less Mahariel and Surana were my favourites.
And, depending on how old your character's family is, it restricts how old your character can plausibly be.
I also just prefer orphan protagonists.
It's not something I'll get angry about being included, but after DA2 I'd rather not.
You might get called your surname by your race and your friends, while other races might just call you elf/human/qunari/dwarf

Again, Mr. Hound Hitter, it would serve you right if Cole from Asunder ended up a DLC companion or something like that. ![]()
@Eve I figured I'll probably be called by my title by strangers/soliders under my command ("What is it, Inquisitor?), my surname by friends (What can I do for you, Lady Cadash?), a nickname from Varric (c'mon, you know he's gonna) and "my love" by a LI.

He has to.

It wouldn't be him otherwise. ![]()

He didn't give Hawke a nickname. He simply has to rectify this in DA:I ![]()

Huh? He called me waffles iirc I think it was Mark of the Assassin though.
For me the only char he doesn't have to give a nickname to is my Vassoth mage because then I would have nickname for Varric: bowling ball
or at least that is how I will role-play our relationship.
Knowing the surnames does make it a bit easier to come up with first names for all my characters... I am so tempted to name my female dwarf Shayle, I really liked Shale's name in it's original spelling. I always have non-game related back story for my characters in my head, so if I used Shayle it would be because the family was honoring an ancestor, unaware that Shale is still "alive." I've also been thinking of using french names for my human and elven characters.
Out of curiosity, I looked up the meanings of the surnames being used. Trevelyan is a Cornish name meaning "from the homestead on the hill", Lavellan is the name of a mythological creature of Scottish Gaelic origin meaning "water shrew" and apparently it was described as highly poisonous and able to kill a cow from a hundred feet away, Adaar means "fire" in Hebrew (spelled Adar). Cadash needs no such research. I found it interesting, so I thought I should just post it in case anyone else might too.

Fascinating stuff. I didn't know about the lavellan, I just thought that Bioware had chosen a vaguely elfish sounding name. So a poisonous rodent. Maybe Bioware is trying to send us some kind of message about the Dalish Inquisitor? ![]()
If the Inquisitor has a sibling like Bethany, sure. If he has a sibling like Carver, hell no.
Ha! I loved Carver and didn't care for Bethany. She was waaaaay too sweet and perfect for my taste. Give me a sarcastic, surly and insecure Carver anyday. ![]()
On topic, I don't know why, but I don't expect to have or see any family as the Inquisitor. In that way, I expect it to be a bit more like the TES games. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
I would hope to see my mother or father or my brother or sister, just somebody! Can the protagonist have living parents or naw?
Before or after the writers decide to kill them off for no good reason other than The Feelz!!!

I 'liked' Carver, because as someone with two younger brothers I can appreciate the writers doing a good job at making him an authentic little brother. Made Hawke and Carver's relationship pretty relatable, actually.

Other way round for me thanks, I'd rather have A sibling that is actually interesting instead of boring =P
Also hopefully if the Inquisitor has a living mother she isn't voiced by Deborah Moore. My Warden was a human noble so she voiced his mother, then Leandra Amell was voiced by her as well. I had enough trouble having my two characters having mothers with the same exact voice it will be more difficult and confusing having all three characters like this lol
