Kaidan and Liara: two Lifts, two Throws, one Singularity, and one Neural Shock. Plus Sabotage if I need it. I never spec into Stasis on squadmates.
Ash and Wrex: Team Immunity if you are an Infiltrator.

It really depends on Shepard's class, but Garrus + Wrex are good for any class.

I agree with SpockJedi.
Your characters should compensate for whatever ins missing in your protagonist.
And if you have to face the geth, always bring Tali, since AI hacking can be very helpful. Not only it reduces the number of enemies, but increases the number of allies.

Depends on my LI, i always have my LI in my squad and then a bro, like Garrus or Wrex. Ultimate bro-Squad: Wrex & Garrus, True badassery ![]()

I usually stick to a balanced team. I currently play as a Sentinel and if my Shepard faces multiple tough organic enemies (mercenaries or cerberus), I pick Wrex for tank purposes, In the meantime I cover him with my powers and Garrus provides additional support and snipes enemies from distance. But If I face multiple non-sapient creatures (husks, creepers, rachni etc) then I use mostly biotics: Kaidan (he is more useful than Wrex because he can span more powers) and Liara. For synthetics Tali and Ash make a good combo.
For my Vanguard Kaidan and Garrus are win-win in every combat situation.
But generally, the dream team is biotics+tech+weapons: one front-liner (soldier, vanguard, Wrex or Tali), one supporter (Adept, Engineer, Sentinel, or Liara) and one sniper (Soldier, Infiltrator or Garrus). But if it's Pinnacle Station then 2 or all three people have to be tanks, because you know...time limit.

Soldier:
Liara + Garrus/Tali
Engineer:
Liara + Wrex/Kaidan
Infiltrator:
Liara + Garrus/Tali
Sentinel:
Liara + whoever the hell you want
Vanguard:
Liara + Garrus/Tali
Adept:
1: Liara + Wrex/Kaidan.
2: Liara + whoever the hell you want.
3: Kaidan + Wrex (3 times stasis, lol)
4: Liara + Garrus/Tali
I'm noticing a pattern here...

Some combination of Liara, Kaidan, and Wrex. On Insanity you want to keep enemies floating so they don't activate that Catalyst awful Immunity ability of theirs.
The squadmates are really bad at shooting in this game and tech abilities aren't anywhere near as useful as biotics outside of opening crates.

This is why Adept + Liara + Kaidan is my favourite ME1 party. You get to open crates AND lift, throw, singularize (lol) and warp to your heart's content.
Warp is pretty awesome too in ME1.

Clearly this is entirely dependent on the class and abilities of your own character and would thus vary for everyone.
For me, as a soldier, I'ld take Liara and Tali, or maybe Garrus later on for the extra firepower on top of the tech abilities.
Another important aspect of choosing your squad is keeping in mind that in ME1 you unfortunately have to issue directional commands to your squad as a whole, meaning that if you have both a long range member and a short range member, one is always going to be fighting at a suboptimal distance.
That's why, for example, as a soldier, I take along an engineer and an adept - usually Liara and Tali (or Garrus for more firepower), so they can stay back together, using their powers, while I can be more aggressive and move in with weapons blazing.
It could work the other way, also; if you were an adept, for example, you'd probably want squad members that did well at close range, like a soldier and a vanguard. Ashley and Wrex maybe. I only play as soldier though so I wouldn't know about sending squad members in for close-quarters combat.

This would be an example of a mixture of short and long range members, which (since you can only issue commands to your squad as a whole) would force one of your squad members to be fighting outside their optimal range. But obviously, with a solid strategy, the right power usage, and some skill, you could make this work well.

You shouldn't depend on your squadmates shooting anything in ME1. They're useless at it. Sometimes they just shoot a wall for a minute.

Most of the time they do, but for example on Eden Prime or during attack on the Citadel, they are quite useful. I remember sending Garrus ahead for checking the area and immideately heard 'Bang!' and there was XP and Credits. After I went to see what he killed, I was surprised it was a Krogan.

You still need them at optimal range to use their powers effectively without getting killed. Since I'm a soldier, that means keeping them behind cover and farther away from the enemies so I don't have to waste media-gel on them or risk getting them killed. I might not depend on them for shooting anything (I do most of the shooting), but I absolutely depend on their abilities and biotics and therefore keeping them in the right place in combat is very important.
This could cause a problem if I'm directing my squad to stay back behind cover if one of the party members is effective at close range. That's why as a soldier I choose 2 party members who can stay back and use their powers at long-range without getting hurt. Pretty straight forward.

Ashley and Kaidan
Human Strong eh?
Anyway depends on the stituion and class I'm playing but it's mostly divided into this:
Fighting Geth: Tali and Garrus.
Fighting dudes: Tali and Ashley.
Fighting Rachni: Tali and Wrex.

No no no no no. Tech skills, for starters, are useless against Rachni. At best, whoever you fight, you should have 1 character in your squad with tech abilities, and preferably one that can do more than just tech, a.k.a. Kaidan. (Though Tali's low cooldown makes up for her lack of other skills)
The reason why is simple: enemies can't shoot at you, use skills or do whatever when they are stuck in a singularity, lift, stasis or are being thrown back by a.. eh.. throw. All of these, except Stasis, can floor/float multiple enemies at once. To get somewhat of the same effect using tech you need to use at least 2 skills (sabotage and eh.. damping? is that what it's called?) and then the enemy will still move around like a chicken that just had it's head cut off. The only absolute plus tech has over biotics, is that it can lower the shields of enemies over a fairly large area... which brings us back to Kaidan, who can do that + biotics. Oh and tech opens crates... which is the main reason for taking someone who has tech with you.
From an RP perspective you can do whatever you want, of course, but when we're talking about 'the best' any squad that does not at least feature Liara is sub-par. (unless it's Adept Shepard + Wrex + Kaidan
.. but that group is still bested when replacing Wrex with Liara) Liara can immobilize entire groups all by herself. Couple her with an Adept Shepard (Bastion specialization) and good Biotic Amps (Savants) and you can keep that group floating indefinetly. By the time Shepard's singularity collapses, Liara drops one, and when hers collapses, Shepard's is off cooldown. Rince, repeat.
The above should make it abundantly clear why you cannot use biotics anymore on shielded enemies from ME2 on.
By far the best squad is Adept Shepard (Assault Rifle bonus power, level to the maximum) + Liara + Kaidan.
On my last run Kaidan was dead, so I had to take Tali with me to the final battle. Saren did not get off a single shot or skill. Nothing. All he did was float around in lifts and be stuck in stasis (Bastion specialization allows damage on an enemy in stasis). Replacing Tali with Kaidan would pretty much have made the entire game a joke, not just that particular battle.
And mind you, the only biotic skill my Shepard had maxed out was singularity, all the others were at advanced level. I didn't even need a Master Lift to float Saren. That's how ridiculous biotics are in ME1.

I like
Tali and Liara
Liara and Garrus
but then as a soldier you kinda are forced into those choices if you really are going for the best possible squad.
