Shepard romanced Kaidan in ME1, but after the way he treated her on Horizon she decided that chapter in her life was over. It would have been cool if you could click on the picture of your LI to turn it down, though how the pre-SM scene would play out in that case I am not sure. But I sure don't appreciate having Shepard moon over someone she no longer cares about!

I didn't romance Kaiden in Mass Effect 1 so I can't speak from experiece. But I will say he does act like he doesn't care about Shepard anymore on Horizion which irritated me because I saved his girly biotic a** on Virmire. The only love interest I feel like the picture was good for was Liara.
Well, after deciding to send Thane through the vents, I regretted not romancing him. Would have made for a nice, tragic story and avoided the whole Kaidan issue. Also, his romance scene in ME2 is pretty good and by killing him I could avoid the crappy romance stuff in ME3.
