There is always a balance between realism and entertainment (fun). Realistically most people know there is no air in space so therefore no sound. For entertainment sake, concessions are made. Why? Because it is cool to hear the Death Star blow up. It fun to see the laser beams shot across and hit the enemy.

Light sabers are neat especially with different colors.

Do we really believe in real life that even Bruce Lee could fight off 25 men? Of course not, but in the movies he looks great doing it. But then again I am talking about Bruce Lee maybe he could... Nah!  ;)

There is a difference between a simulation and an crpg, but that does not mean that certain aspects cannot appear in either.

I seriously doubt that Bioware is going to get into the nuts and bolts of warfare. That is best left to a simulation like Hearts of Iron. Even Hearts of Inron can have some aspects of a crpg. You can take your captain all the way up to general depending on how well you do.

It will probably be more like DAO  with a little more involvement. The protagonist may have to make decisions on where to send troops and what to protect. More strategic level decision making than tactical.

From our end I'd like to focus on the logistical side of things. IE you can't bring the Inquisition's armies to bear without secure supply lines, so sending the party ahead to take out bandits, monsters, enemy roadblocks, etc. will increase your ability to exert your power in the area.

Personally I have a feeling the military aspect will sort of be like an improvement on awakening where we can recruit people, find strategic resources, and assign orders to commanders about where in a region they are to deploy but you won't be doing personal commanding unless its a situation like Crestwood where the field commander asks for your input on how to proceed.

I want a map with lines on it. One of the little things in Skyrim I liked a lot was how you could walk into one of the Jarl's courts and they had a map of Skyrim with red or blue flags in the city, towns, and forts that (was supposed to) update as they changed hands. Granted it didn't work very well, but I still liked the idea. I'd love something similar in DA:I, with maps showing where the Inquisition and other factions are strongest. Maybe have multiple maps, with one showing the Inquisiton/those cultists, another with the Orlesian Civil War, and everyone's favorite conflict, the Templars/mages. And of course, those maps would change as the story progressed. That way near the end of the game my Inquistior can just stare at the maps and reflect on how far they've come.

The downside of this is that cartography barely existed anywhere on Earth until about the fifteenth century or so, and did not produce consistently reliable or accurate maps until the mid-nineteenth century when large-scale surveying projects finally became the norm. Medieval warlords of the sort that we are likely to find as analogues in Dragon Age did not and could not make war from maps. The sort of spatial frame of reference that would have permitted them to do so simply did not exist. It was a psychological impossibility.

Although it's very dramatic to see a picture of an Inquisitor's chambers with a council of war gathered around a vast scale depiction of the countryside, it would be - will be, considering the concept art that we've seen - an anachronism on par with qunari steam-powered warships or Orlesian water-powered textile factories.

That probably won't bother most people, but it will make me a little sad. After which I will promptly forget my sadness because of hilarious companion banter or whatever.

Of course, Azeroth is not a low-tech fantasy world, thanks to gnome and goblin engineers, they have zeppelins and airplanes. Oddly, though, despite having airplanes, motorcycles, & helicopters (*) ... Azeroth's ships still use sails and oars, and have no steam engines, but we digress.

My guess is this helps with aerial mapping.  :)

(*) Never seen a single damn refueling depot for them, though. Of course, once you visit Northrend, you do realize Azeroth does have oilfields.
