I know it's hopeless to ask for this to be on something other than Origin, and to be honest, Origin has generally been okay for me most of the time.

Today though, when I logged in, Origin downloaded some update for Dragon Age Origins Ultimate edition.  Excited to see what new patch there was I go to open up the game and I'm greeted with some message saying my game is not Activated, and I can't play.

Great.

On the EA/Origin support forums, it looks like everyone is having this problem, so hopefully it'll be resolved eventually.

But being locked out of a single player game with no servers, a game that I spent money on, is absolutely unacceptable.  It's really just absurd.  Not to mention that I've had other issues and problems with various DLCs activating and what not for DA1 and 2.  I feel like a complete idiot for spending all this money buying all your stuff, and having problems simply playing the content I've bought, when it did literally nothing to stop pirates who gave you absolutely no money.

Anyway, I get that you're going to require Origin for a one time activation.  But make sure it works!  And then after activated, don't do any more stupid online checks that you're just bound to mess up!

Rant over.

Probably would have more success on the DAO forum oppose to DAI.

I'm not really looking for tech support for my issue...besides those forums are dead and ironically I think Bioware shut down the tech support forums for those games anyway.

I'm really just trying to comment on what I hope is a change in policy for Dragon Age Inquisition, so it's relevant here.

Gonna be honest, didn't read your entire post. Just glanced at it and it looked like an angry tech rant.

The tech support forums have been replace by the answer HQ The DAO HQ is http://answers.ea.co...gon-age-origins

(your problem is a hot topic with a flame icon I believe)

There doesn't seem to be a solution to this problem yet but others are having it, so they are aware of it and are working on a fix.

Sorry I can't offer an answer, but to suggest you post that you're having this problem there. That will be the best place to find out about when they fix the problem.

Are you talking about the Simcity thing? You could have talked about the Mass Effect 3 release and made your post more credible.

Bioware was not in charge of Simcity, just because EA gives them money does not mean Bioware is in charge of all EA games.

I have never had any troubles with DRM and Bioware games, although the old way of updating the game is a massive chore. Why can't they just have you update the game when you purchase the add-on in game? Why must you log into the Bioware network and connect to your profile which is always broken to download something in someplace that you cannot find?

Make sure it works? As in, an unpirateble game? Not sure that's possible.

Maybe it has something to do with the keep?

Just tried my copy and it worked fine.  As an update it didn't actually download anything (for me anyway) as when I expanded the download box it actually was verifying file integrity (plus there is no way I could download 400 M per second)

Btw do make sure you've manually installed patch 1.05 http://social.biowar...page/da-patches

there is a problem with the Ultimate Edition on Origins were the cd-key is placed in the wrong location, installing that patch fixes it, as patch 1.05 isn't auto included with new installs of the Ultimate Edition, try that and see if that fixes your problem

I very much agree with this. I'm on console, but I still have to wait for my games to log into EA servers every time (which I still don't understand for a completely single-player game), which has sometimes screwed up in the past. I buy my games on disc, and my saves are local on the hard drive of my console, so why the heck should I get hassled with checks every time? I don't understand how that does anything other than annoy paying customers.

I really don't know why more companies can't adopt the attitude of CD Projekt Red. No DRM and their customers love them for it. If only I liked their games...

Anyway, it would be awesome if DAI would do a one-time authentication, and then never again. Sadly, I don't think BioWare has any say in this and EA is not likely to change their crappy way of doing things anytime soon. I'm just hoping we don't get any major DRM gaffs that end up locking us out of DAI. Crossing my fingers.

I pre-ordered the CE of Dragon Age: Origins and installed it on release day. It included an awesome 'Stone Prisoner' DLC that took 14 hours to download. And I couldn't play the game until it finished downloading because whenever I hit 'start,' it checked for my DLC that wasn't there and gave me an error message.

After it downloaded, every time I tried to start the game, it would check for the DLC, but because their servers were 'being hammered,' the check wouldn't go through.

This was before Origin, by the way. If BioWare was traded to another publisher, there would still be problems like this.

I was on dial-up back then too. But I guess they'd sorted out the activation issues by the time I bought the game. I had to complete my first run without Shale, but I could do it.

As for the topic, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect DRM systems to work properly. At least to not be any buggier than the games themselves. Anyone who's in this hobby knows that you're gonna get hit with bugs from time to time, though.

The reason why DRM or any copy protection exists is the same reason people have locks on their doors or safeguards on their identity.  People steal. What CDProjectK is banking on is that enough honest people will buy their product to kept them profitable.

If CDProjectK finds that more people are getting free copies rather than purchasing a copy CDProjectK would have to rethink their business model. So far for them that has not been the case.

Many independent developers have games with no DRM you will be surprised at the number of free copies versus purchased copies out. Many people get the free copy with the intention of buying the game if they find it to be good, but never seem to get around to doing it.

If the developer does not cover his/her costs and make a reasonable profit the developer will be gone. It does not matter if the company is as big as EA or as same as Basilisk games.

The same with the movie and music industry. I can go on line and get just about any game, movie or music I want and not pay a dime. How is a developer, artist or movie studio going to stay in business? It depends on honest people buying the product and paying for the hard work that was done.

Yes, DRM should work, but just like the games there are bugs that must be worked out. It would be nice to have a world that was DRM free. It would also be nice to have a world that was crime free.

Sounds like the old chestnut where the updater fails to run despite being set to automatic (same issue that causes dlc to become unauthorised). Try the steps in this link, specifically the part about manually starting the updater service: http://help.ea.com/e...d-or-not-there/

And yeah, if that could please not be needed for the next game, that'd not suck.

On the site you linked it says that the Origin version features the 1.05 patch:

Excerpt

INSTALLATION
  • The Ultimate Edition installer for the EA Download Manager (EADM) version of the game was placing the CD-Key in the wrong location in the Windows registry. EADM has been replaced with EA's Origin system and this error has been corrected in the new Origin installer. For those who purchased and installed the Ultimate Edition via EADM, the Patch 1.05 installer will copy that CD-Key into the correct Windows registry location.
