While Evasion is often avoided by the PC, I find it useful for Cunning Rogue Companions (eg; Zevran or other DW builds). However, as I prefer Nathaniel as a DEX Archer, I tend to skip this tree completely.
Cunning works better for Archery too in Origins, and much better for DW in Origins and Awakenings. The introduction of the "Accuracy" talent in Awakening, however, meant that Dexterity wins hands down for Archery. How well an Archer does now, with that talent active, depends entirely on it.
It gets so I resent putting points into cunning for traps and locks, on Nathaniel. It means cutting down on his damage capabilities.

I tend to set up my archers (Nathaniel, Lelliana and my main when I play Rogue) with light armor. I didnt see much sense in putting more than 21 points (7 levels) into strength, considering they dont use armor which has a high strength requirement and my last Rogue playthrough went smoothly since the char had more than 80 points in dexterity (with armor and equipment bonuses the dex rose to some 120), making that character dodge a fair portion of attacks.
so what Im saying is - you wont need strength or medium+ armor for nathaniel, as a high armor rating draws a crowd and an archer needs all the dex/cunning points he can get to cause enough pain.
this way Nathaniel only fell around 4 times in my playthrough, but then again - I made both mages into spirit healers .... you get the idea on what tactics they had set up. :-)

As for Nathaniel, select the armor of choice, and build him around this or whatever design that is desired.

When I use Nathaniel, I give him 22 cunning max. The rest of his points are put into dexterity.

That works if you Sigrun along for the ride, or you're a rogue yourself. If it's a one-rogue party, though, and you're in a place like the Silverite mine you can't return to or you're worried about traps, it means wasting points on cunning ![]()

I have never believed that 22 Cunning and max Disarm Trap talents were a waste. Add an item or two for skill bonuses if needed, and this may be good enough.
Personally, I have only used one Cunning based Rogue, and much prefer the DEX and/ or STR hybrid designs. And Siggy makes an incredible hybrid Archer, too.
