WHO RUN THE WORLD?

I thought Celine and Anora ran the world?  And Justinia, of course. Don't misunderstand me; there are lots of people involved in the running of the world, of a variety of genders and preferences.  There, as here.

Yes, yes, I know Mr Flouncypants over there has decided that Earth is run a certain way, and that his odd perception of how it's run is important to incidental dialogue in Thedas, because reasons, but actually, you could make a case that Thedas is run by women.

(Great reverse flounce, BTW; complete with subject-derailing dismount.  9/10 from the East European judge)

I think Penny Arcade had a theory about something like this.

Reminds me of the saying: "A king may rule a kingdom, but the queen rules the king."

*sigh* I've reported him as well. He really has no business in this thread, and actually no business interacting with 21st century human beings. Apparently any gender that is soccer-playing and comedic rules the world.  His mother sure did raise a good boy.

Someone mentioned Anora just now - actually that reminds me of how I always wanted her to stay Queen. I saw her as a good ruler, and that whole "blood claim to the throne" business rubbed me the wrong way. Meh.

I have her and Hardened Alistair rule. They make a really good team apparently.

It always really bugged me how dismissive Eamon was of Anora. He acted like it was a horrible thing that she had Cailan wound around her little finger, but neglects to consider the necessity because Cailan is kind of an idiot. Of course Eamon seems quite happy to have Alistair wound around his little finger.

I don't think she is an ideal leader, but Ferelden could do much, much worse.

Well, we needed someone to root for Alistair. Alistair himself certainly wasn't that person.

It's almost as if he is a close friend of the Theirin family, and would rather his nephews rule than someone else.

I don't have a problem with Eamon's allegiance to them. But the way Alistair hangs off of his every word and craves his approval is kind of disturbing. The man made Alistair sleep in the kennels when he was a child and sent him off to the Templars when his wife disapproved. I don't believe Maric would have wanted Alistair to be treated like that. Eamon just seems to get a pass because of his nice old man act.

Oh, I agree with that. I was more saying what I said as answer to him not considering Anora.

And yeah, let's hope his mother Fiona* doesn't find out Eamon did that to her kid.

*Assuming Fiona is Aiistair's mother which I think she is

Another reason I like Hardened Alistair + Anora + PC Chancellor Eamon's is pretty much driven to Redcliffe because he's useless. :3

It's wonderful how these kinds of threads always make the sexists come out of the woodwork. But who am I to contribute anything here, after all males should dominate the world. *shakes head*

I thought Anora was a good ruler as well, tbh. Not the perfect solution as sole ruler (but neither is Alistair), but her and my Warden were pretty damn perfect as far as I can see it. (If he didn't just up and disappear, that is.)

As for the overall topic: I whole-heartedly agree with OP. I must admit that the sexist comments directed at the female PC never quite registered with me, mostly because I have come to expect them from that kind of setting. With one exception: The much-discussed "I'm braver than you, and I'm a woman!" comment. That rubbed me the entirely wrong way and if there was ever a moment in DA:O that made me want to slap someone, it was this one. Way to insult women and try to pass it off as an empowering comment. I also gotta admit that Loghain's "You're pretty for a Warden" comment never bothered me. I only played an elf once and to be quite honest I find Loghain attractive and was too busy giggling like a schoolgirl to feel offended. But even looking at it in this new light, the "Don't let anyone tell you you don't belong here" part makes me forgive him (mostly). What can I say, I have a soft spot for the nutbag.

Anyway, after reading this thread (even the more...narrow-minded comments), I can see how some of these instances would be truly jarring. I am quite sure that Bioware is doing their best, however. They've come a long way since DA:O, after all, and have the (verbal) scars to prove it. ;)

I think so too. But I'd almost feel bad for Eamon if he had to deal with Fiona. Almost.

I thought this article was apropos for this discussion, especially this bit:

"We need to stop giving into the realism excuse," he said, "especially when most of our games are fantasy games … and not historically accurate, and [instead] question whether realism even makes any sense for our game. If it does, then we need to make sure that the realism isn’t boiled down into such a simplistic model that it creates more problems.

It's about a speech given at GDC by Manveer Heir, someone who worked on the Mass Effect series, about making games more inclusive, and at better at representing minorities.

The reason you find all the disrespect in these games is because it's a medieval setting.

I thought Dragon Age was set in an alternate world? Where there's equality of genders, regardless of time period?

Did anyone else see that in the franchise's description? No? T'was just me?

It is an alternate reality without any connection to Earth or its timeline, but people consistently seem to have a hard time wrapping their heads around that.

Well, Manveer Heir is a mensch.  I look forward to seeing the full version of his talk, which is supposed to be coming out some time this week.

To use a wrestling term, I think a lot of it ultimately comes down to cheap heat; they're going to have the badguys make sexist comments as a quick and easy way to demonstrate "This is the badguy, you're not supposed to like him." Howle being the example that most stuck out in my mind- not that they needed much more to make Howle loathsome.

It wasn't the comments from the badguys we were talking about really...it was the ones who were our allies that went 'wimmenz kno how use sword??!?' that kinda made us blink at the game.

Yeah Murdoch in Redcliffe is a good example of that since he question's a female warden's ability when they come to find out how to improve the militia. His initial conversation seems to suggest he doesn't believe women can be wardens therefore you're not a warden. It's not blatant but he's almost calling you a liar for being a female warden... or that's the impression I get at the start of the conversation. As I never play a male pc I don't know if he doubts a male warden but he definitely makes it clear he doesn't believe women to be capable warriors.

For myself i would love specific gender and class dialogue as i find it more immersive and real so i would support more unique individuals.
