I'm not sure this is the right Mass Effect sub-forum to post this question in, but for some reason I can't post in any of the others. (If someone wants to move it to where it belongs, that would be kind of you.)

Anyway, I'm playing ME1 for the very first time! And while I haven't chosen a love interest yet, I have a general question: do I need to take my love interest with me on missions in order to advance the romance? Not just on personal companion-type missions, but is keeping them in the squad necessary? (I ask because I'm thinking ahead to ME2 and Garrus and I seem to have a major overlap in skill sets.)

When I romanced Ashley all I did was talk nice to her on the ship. From what I remember, taking your potential LI on a mission does not play a factor in the romance.

Nope, all you need to do is just talk with them on the ship.

All you need to do is making apropriate choices when speaking with them. After each main mission have a talk and keep things updated. Oh, and if you want to avoid a debate, do not try two romances at once. Mass Effect wikia, on the romance topic explains how to avoid the scene with the 2 fighting over you.

You do not need to take them with you. But if you want to know more your love interest, it´s always nice to take them and see his of her comments on missions whenever you click on them.

It does not affect the romance, however.

Ok, now some spoiler allerts. I believe this has some interference in ME2. If your LI is with you, one of the commercials recognize the fact.

In ME3, specially on the citadel DLC, this will happen to a much greater extent.

Ok, more spoilers: On ME3, if you want to continue a romance with kaidan or ash, you will have to ensure they survive a confrontation with you on the citadel. The more loyal you currently are to them, the easiest it becomes to end the stand-off. After that, they can go to work with the Alliance on a super-project or they can join the Normandy. In order for the romance to keep going, you should accept him or her.

A friendly warning: At some point in one of your later conversations with Liara, she may mention that she is a 100-year-old virgin.  If you have decided NOT to romance her, do not ask her about it.  Having the "sex talk" with her will lock you into a romance with her and override any romance you may have had with Ash or Kaidan.

If they ever remake the trilogy, I hope they place warning signs at the dialogue options.

pisses me off when the game makes decisions for me. during a talk with Liara all of the sudden she says "it appears you have something going on with Ashley"..........and I'm like "I've never looked at a 'cat' that way". I'm a Kaidan guy lol.

The real question is: how do I NOT romance someone? ME1 is notorious for its ninja romances. You show these least little courtesy to either Kaidan or Ashley and all of the sudden they think you have the hots for them. At least Liara has a clear dialogue option to tell her you are not interested.

Yeah, it's unfortunate you can't get the exposition/character history from Kaidan/Ashley without them thinking you are interested in them that way. You either have to be rude, and thus get no more dialogue options, or ignore them altogether for, again, no dialogue options.

It´s even worse on 2 with a male shep and Jack.

Actually, the "I'm not interested" dialogue with Liara is the trap and locks in a romance with her. Not sure if that happens in everyone's game, but many people including myself have encountered this glitch. I've heard the "just friends" dialogue is okay, but I can't personally confirm that. The only sure way to not romance anyone is to avoid speaking with them.

1. Ashley - In the first conversation with her, when she questions having aliens on the ship, choose the middle-LEFT option on the dialogue wheel. From then on, the conversations progress as it would for a female Shepard. She'll call you "Commander" rather than "Skipper."

2. Kaidan - In the first conversation with him, he'll apologize for rambling. Pick the bottom-right option on the dialogue wheel. From then on, the conversations progress as it would for a male Shepard. He'll end his conversations with "Commander" rather than "I'd like that."

3. Liara - In her second conversation with you, she'll ask if there's something going on between you and Ashley/Kaidan. Tell her that you're just friends. Then she'll ask if there's something between you and her. Pick the middle-right option that lets her know you're not interested in her in that way. She'll call you "Commander" rather than "Shepard."

I found this some time ago. Doing that is guaranteed that you will not engage in an accidental romance.

How about you play the game at least once without advices or tips :P?  Maybe on your second or third playthrough go for your selective choices. Take it from me (over 5500 hours spent playing the trilogy) it's much better when you experience things for yourself. Looking on youtube or google for possible outcomes only ruins the experience for you ^^.

My first play was a blind one. Needless to say, I made a lot of mistakes. For instance, I mistreated Tali thinking she was working for Saren and could be a husk or Geth in disguise, all because the timing of the events seemed wrong (a plot hole, actually). I though she was going to betray me.

And when people come to the forum asking for tips related to the story... Well, you can bet they are not interested in playing blindly.

Some stuff is really cool to see unspoiled, like Sovereign's speech on Virmire. And Shepard's conversations with Saren. I was amazed.

But playing through without knowing any tips? That's not something I would enjoy, personally. During my first playthrough, I was kind of clueless at times. Somehow, I ended up thinking that Liara was supposed to be recruited on the planet where Admiral Kahoku's mission takes place. After getting the team killed by a thresher maw several times, I realized that I was on the wrong planet. I needed advice from BSN before I was able to defeat thresher maws at all. I knew it was a choice-based game, so when Jenkins died his first time off the Normandy, I thought I had messed up already. I would have reloaded countless times trying to save characters who couldn't be saved if I hadn't known about their fates ahead of time.

So it's a fine line. I've always liked reading spoilers, everything I can find. But if friends tell me there's a must-see plot twist that I should play spoiler-free (Jade Empire comes to mind), I'll take their advice.

Bringing squad mates for mission don't really matter but for my  first time playing mass effect in noveria my squad mates kept on saying bring liara so i brought her on that mission and that was actually to advance the romance i didn't know at the time but thats it, the rest don't have there mission thats why theres the loyality

missions on me2.i mostly bring wrex garrus or Ashley on the mission and its never advances only talking in the normandy after main missions completed.slo

Although there aren't any loyalty missions in ME1, Garrus and Wrex will have one mission each that become available if Shepard keeps speaking with them. You're not even required to bring them along, but there's extra dialogue if you do.

Advice to the OP: Make sure you do Wrex's mission before Virmire.

Although already answered, you don't have to take potential LI's on any missions whatsoever, excepting that you have to use Kaidan and Ash on Eden Prime, and then for the first part of Citadel.  Somewhat cursorily related, there is a bit of dialogue in the Wards that you only get if you have Ash and Kaidan when you stop by the first time, and fits in with an Ash romance a bit.  It isn't required though.

Works the same way with Kaidan, somewhat. If Shep responds with the paragon option, Ash says "I'll walk drag" as if to say, "I'll stay out you two's way."

I circumvented this whole thing by killing Ashley choosing Kaidan on Virmire, and only then picking up Liara.

One of my Shepards was as mean to Liara as the dialogue options would allow him to be, and she still wanted him.

In that case, reload or NG+ and recruit her after Virmire so the romance won't have a chance to trigger.

I always considered it a Critical Mission Failure if I didn't get the confrontation scene between Liara and Ash.
