It's like they couldn't spend 5 minutes on the internet to look up stuff. Oh yeah, Resources. It's like they never watched any historical documentaries to learn about what hand to salute with. It's like they never even watched a f****** movie that involved a military story. The face palm isn't big enough. For an alien military - go for it: do whatever you want. But for Earth, there are a lot of things in common between nations.

Maybe they just figured that 170 years from now some stuff will probably be different anyway, so why sweat the details?

Bioware used British rank for their ME equivalent.

"A commander in the Royal Navy is senior to an officer holding the rank of lieutenant commander but junior to a captain. A commander may command a frigatedestroyersubmarine, aviation squadron or shore installation, or may serve on a staff."

Yeah. You guys are looking at American Military ranks and salutes. So yeah things have changed since then. Plus Alliance Command is in Vancouver, implying Canada rises to power in the future. *Beams with joy*

This reminded me of this image and I felt obligated to post it

I didn't want to say anything in case the mods were Canadian.

They are as far as I know, but a harmless little joke won't get me a ban, right?

Right?!

Interesting....I wonder if Bioware knew that starting to make the series....then again, maybe not.

If they made Shep a Lt. Commander instead of a commander in me1 I'd say not.
Though, I haven't seen anything that stated it, others have said it's true. And my favorite wiki confirms it. However, I'd think Shep is actually a staff commander.

Maybe Shepard started as a Lt Commander, but after he took over the normandy he became a commander, and people called him commander.

It's really not something that's bothering me.

I hope the next character won't be military, but rather mercenary that coudl build up a mercenary company(private security)

The character could have it's own interests, missions and goals and a other missions where there is an employer.

Both a Lt. Commander and a Commander often just referred to as 'Commander,' so I don't think that is an indication Shepard was promoted after assuming command of the Normandy.

Saluting with the right hand isn't unique to Americans. Every army on Earth salutes with the right hand.

Perhaps the Alliance started saluting with the left hand to differentiate themselves from Earth based militaries?

This took me less than 15 seconds:  Canadian Military Ranks

My point is that there was no excuse. BTW the same holds true in the US Navy about a frigates and their commanders. "A commander in the U.S. Navy may command a frigatedestroyersubmarine, aviation squadron or small shore activity, or may serve on a staff (typically as executive officer) of a larger vessel. An officer in the rank of commander who commands a vessel may also be referred to as "captain" as a courtesy title, or informally referred to as "skipper". - Wikipedia

Another 15 seconds of my time.

Don't give me any bull**** about resources and time.

If all the salutes were left-handed we could perhaps chalk it up to being some lore-based reason, but there are both right-handed and left-handed salutes in the series. The left-handed salutes were most likely an error on the part of the devs rather than something intended.

I personally didn't see it as a big deal. I just chuckled and moved on, though I hope it isnt a mistake they'd make in future games. I kind of view it as being in the same category as noticing Tony Curtis' character wearing a wristwatch in Spartacus. Its the video game equivalent of a blooper basically,

Oh, I thought they were all left handed. Either way it's something I hardly noticed.

The left handed salutes I'm pretty certain were all bugs.  I think when Kaidan joins the Normandy he initially salutes with his left hand(shown from the back) but when they show his face the right hand is the one that's up.

To be fair probably the vast majority of gamers who played ME3 didn't notice it. As far as complaints go, its fairly nitpicky. I only noticed it because I used to be in the military, and you tend to notice even small mistakes in film or video game portrayals of things you're personally familiar with. I imagine thats why a film like Gravity was a hit with film critics and the general public, while astrophysicists, astronomers, and astronauts were more critical of certain aspects of the film.

Getting from the Hubble to the ISS with an MMU and Clooney untethering himself was pretty lulzy.

Still a good movie though.

Actually, Canada willingly gets annexed/absorbed by the United States, along with Mexico, to form the United North American States.

Canada. The Great White North. A beautiful country.

When I was in the military, a few guys told me that Canada has one of the toughest training for special forces. I have no idea what its like today.

Hmmmm, which characters are most likely to be Canadian, just from character traits? I know, the hanar.
