Reading this thread, I'm reminded by a word of advice from TvTropes.

Also, please remember that entirely fictional armed forces are under no obligation to behave exactly like their real life counterparts.

However, that does not mean that BioWare can ignore internal inconstancy.

I'd say that they don't have to have the same rules and regulations or ranks.

However, if they're military, they should act military. And yeah, BW should follow internal lore as well.

They gave up that one fairly quickly though.

The easiest way to denial out the mistakes in rank is to assume that since space travel is possible, air, land and sea separations aren't really as relevant and as such the lines between each sections rankings have changed or even merged.

I prefer this to thinking of as yet another goof.

I recall a codex entry in Mass Effect 1 explaining the blurring between Marine and Sailor.

from time to time I'd wondered if shepard went "rogue" because the writers liked the sound of commander shepard, as neither captain shepard, nor major shepard have quite the same ring to it. and if shepard wasn't black listed s/he would have been vice admiral by the time mass effect 3 came around, judging by how quickly kaiden/Ashley moved through the ranks, especially ash.

---edit
also, the term captain within the navy has two meanings, the first is a rank, the second is an officer in command of a ship. in the times of ancient sailing vessels, small ships such as a brig, or sloop would have a single officer (probably an ensign) in command, and said officer would be the captain of that vessel, though someone already took notice, just though I'd put a little more detail into it.

And regardless of fictional setting, militaries should have at least some basic understanding of strategy and tactics. But then we get the rule of dumb.

But this isn't about strategy or tactics anymore, remember?

I think it's called the NPC syndrom. If NPC were actually competent and could get their sh*t together on their own, it would probably a boring game. It would probably play out something like this:

Hackett: "Oh Shepard, good to see you. We have already built the crubcile after sucessfully forming an aliance with the Asari, Turians and Krogans. Also the Quarians were able to negotiate with the Geth peacefully after they let go of their foolish, genocidal plans. We are just docking the crubcile to the citadel this very moment, while the Reapers are still busy invading the batarians."

Shepard: "Oh good. What can I do?"

Hackett:" I don't know. Go and guard this door there I suppose."

For comparison to the Singapore Armed Forces, Admiral is equivalent to the General ranks so 'Captain' as in Captain Anderson is actually equivalent to Colonel (COL). Since Commander is one under Captain in the Codex, it is roughly equivalent to Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC). Lieutenant-Commander then is equivalent to Major (MAJ) so a Staff Lieutenant is equivalent to a Captain (CPT). As for Ashley, Gunnery Chief is roughly equivalent to Master Sergeant (MSG) but she was a Regimental Sergeant-Major (RSM).

This was discussed 2 years ago. It's nitpicky, but I hate the military wrongness of ME.

But, it's all made up and not based on reality.

So...

Salutes are like all those secret little handshakes used by groups that are trying to make themselves seem special, and for it's users to show they belong.

The voicactors probably didn't know your secret handshake and the director didn't tell them to do your salute, therefor they did what they thoguht would work as a salute.

Personaly I find salutes awkward.

Played each game for so many many many hours... never once did I ever notice (or care to?) that the salutes were left-handed..
