I have heard that I can 'recruit' Loghain how, when, why? Also does anyone know how I come by Leliana's pet nug?

After dueling Loghain at the Landsmeet, using anyone but Alistair, you can recruit him into the Grey Wardens. This will cause Alistair to leave your party however. As for Schmooples, you can find the nug-wrangler in Dust Town. Just find him, speak to him, and make him an offer.

Nug wrangler doesn't give you Shmooples, (at least on none of my runs he did).  I spoke to the 'slow' guy in Dusttown, the one who tells you 'you'll fall into the sky if you go topside' about acquiring a nug.  If you ask him, he will run off to fetch you one (just zone over anyplace else and when you get back it's there).  Will cost you a few silvers only.  Leliana must be at 'friend' level approval (have her companion quest done), and I think the succession issues at Orzammar need to be resolved as well.

When you get to Orzammar, talk with Leliana where she will mention something about the subterranean bunny pigs. Then go to dusttown and talk with the guy on the left about getting a nug for you. Come back a couple minutes later and he will have a nug for you. If you don't talk to Leliana first you will not be able to get a nug for her.

Ask her about Orzammar. If her approval is good, she will mention the nugs.

"Idle Dwarf" is the display name of the slow guy on the left in Dust Town who will provide the nug.

It's a bit confusing. While talking to the Nug Wrangler in the commons, Leliana says she doesn't like common nugs. There must be different sorts of nugs then?

I think so, the one she ends up with is a deep-roads nug, bigger with a shiny coat

Yes, the entire Orzammar business doesn't have to be resolved for Leliana to get her nug. You should be able to get her conversation and talk to the idle dwarf in Dusttown as soon as you enter Orzammar (as long as her approval is high enough).

Did the Lolly side quest, talked to her in camp and then back to Orzammar for the nug. 'sigh' the things my warden has to do to keep everyone happy.
