I was stuck on an 8-hours flight with Deception as my sole company (I tend to get stuck on a plane with horrible books for some reason, but I digress). I really hope you are right, and the DA team woudn't allow the same lack of consistency the ME team had allowed.

Is Deception that bad? I haven't read it so I don't know.

Sequels are hard, especially if the original set high expectations. That most of the story is set during the Fourth Blight, thus not involving characters we know and giving her something of a free hand, gives me some hope.

Is it really accurate to say this story is going to be based in the Fourth blight? Only reference I see to the 4th blight is: "Her research into the Fourth Blight leads her to an encoded reference scrawled in the margins of an ancient map, and to the hidden diary of Issenya, one of the last of the fabled griffon riders."

I don't think this means the majority of the story is gonna necessarily take place in flashbacks. It seems like it will be either split evenly btwn the diary entries/4th blight timeline and Issenya's timeline as she acts on whatever secrets she unearths using that diary. Or, it could be the story is mostly Issenya's timeline and the diary is a plot device that leads her to present day leads and we learn the relevant 4th blight events that way. It mentions encoded references on maps and such. Could be the Thedas version of National Treasure.

I think it will be a good story regardless, just saying.

And the plot sounds promising enough from that blurb that I don't have any worries about lore or writing. I have a very good feeling about this book. :)

^ Deception also seemed to get an unusually large amount of press coverage (for something that was basically 'fans complain about [X Thing] on the internet"), which also preceded the ME3 brouhaha by about a month, and if nothing else it was pretty widely-reported negative publicity about their ancillary products.

I would hope that after the last two years or so of feedback that Bioware's internal editing procedures got an overhaul, and there's certainly a case to be made for taking wider-IP things like novels much more seriously than the Mass Effect team were doing. If Casey really read that book and approved it for publication, then that speaks to a much bigger problem of them not noticing or not caring about ridiculous mistakes.

(Or, perhaps more likely, just not taking the novels that seriously because only a few ten thousand hard core fans will ever actually read them?)

DA have been much better though, as I said, so there's nothing to really be concerned about at this point. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about Last Flight, and the story concept sounds fascinating.

This is VERY likely. Speaking of  horribad books and Bioware: Does anyone remember the  sheer horror of the BG novellizations ?

None of that is a joke. It's an abridge version of the book. It's that bad.

Well, I was given the impression that the story would mostly be about ze Griffon rider with the current timeline more as a frame narrative giving some insight into the Grey Warden's current situation. You could be right though.

Wait, was Deception the one where the running joke about Kai Leng stealing Anderson's cereal and then peeing in a vase came from?

And to think, it was his introduction.

I actually like Kai Leng in the game (relatively dark horse opinion, I know) but Christ, that was not a good way to show him off.

*laughing* That rage comic was awesome, especially that epic toothbrush kill at the end XD

I'll never see Traynor the same way when she's so insistent on her buying a new one XD

Yep.

I'm surprised you people haven't encountered it earlier, it's so epic I had it in my signature for quite a while, but apparently the new forums ate it, and doesn't even support more than 5 URLs in the signature. Ugh, was it actually worth "upgrading" to this?

Anyways, there were some glorious times in the Deception thread, many luls were had:

I will probably give the book a read. Why not? By that time I will be super eager for new info on the happenings in Thedas.

The toothbrush drawing at the end always manages to crack me up.

But yeah, I'm glad I canceled my preorder of Deception in time.

Kia Leng was first introduced in a previous book, ME:Retribution.

I think the story will mostly a pattern similar to Kate Mosse's Labyrinth, in which two storylines taking place in different eras are connected in a way, possibly related to an event that happened so long ago and has become relevant again.
