Firstly, I am an XBox 360 owner and my DA:O is played on said console.

I'm curious as to just what exactly triggers the death blow animations. I love watching my warrior or rogue deliver those brutal, blood spattering throat slashes or decapitations, or the epic take-downs of dragons and ogres, but I can't tell just how they're each triggered. What conditions need to be met?

Furthermore, in future installments, I would love to see every kill feature a death blow animation. They're awesome to watch, and give an exciting adrenaline rush.

Many special enemies like dragons and some ogres are automatically killed with a death blow animations. For the other fights: The sooner the fight is over, the more deathblows you get. The chance increases with the number of slain enemies, I suppose. Kind of moral boost at the end.

Are these spoilers? If not, can I say Sten's pivot to drive his greatsword backwards through the enemies gut is a favorite. I vaguely assumed the animations were triggered by a killing critical hit, but I have no proof of this, it is really only an assumption.
But yes, these animations are the biggest influence for my not using magic-users anymore, they really add to the thrill of a kill in a way spells cannot touch.

That makes sense of Sten's "That took longer than I would have liked" comment after some battles.

Just so you are aware there is a mod for the PC version which allows you to set every kill as these animations.

I really hope they never make every kill have a special death-blow animation. That would just make it boring.

Yeah, I appreciate Liam's info, but they are special precisely because they happen infrequently.

You don't find it boring when an enemy simply falls down when its HP reaches 0? I personally do.

Hmm... maybe a 'Death Blow Frequency' slider in the options menu?

Yeah but if every time you killed someone a head flew off or whatever it would be just as boring as the bad guy falling down.

Its like a Michael bay movie....sure things blowing up is fun, but after the 97th explosion it starts to fel a bit overdone.

The said mod has different setting that allow you change the frequency. I have it so that all enemies with names that are yellow or orange or red trigger finishing moves whenever they die, with an increased chance for normal enemies.

Perhaps. Actually nteger just made a good point about when the animations should occur, any enemy yellow rank or higher.

But I digress, maybe in the future a slider to increase or decrease their frequency may be something to consider. At the very least for us console gamers. Image IPB

There is also a version of the mod that just increases the chance of landing a deathblow and forces deathblows on stronger enemies (Howe for example ;))

Having never played an Archer, I'm assuming they don't have any death-blows. If so, it's quite a shame.

I'd love to see an ogre getting shot right between the eyes.

From playing the game numerous times to me it seems like with the enemy has 2% or less health and your players land a crit there is a 15% change that a death blow will happen. Mostly Orges and the Dragons whoever lands the last blow gets the dealthblow animation, archers deathblow animation is the person flying back a few feet for normal enemies, and mages can shatter frozen enemies.

I don't like them since you lose control of your character when they're happening, which is bad when you're surrounded by three or four other enemies and they're getting free hits against you while you twirl around like a prima donna. They should only happen at the end of combat, not the middle.

Ooooh! Or maybe you hit him in the eye and he staggers around in pain for a while grasping at the arrow before finally falling on his face, a la the cave troll in LotR. Not quite as dramatic but it's something.

Damnit, that would be SO cool! They can definitely expand on the death animations in the sequel or the expantion.

Just switch the Oliphaunt to High Dragon and it works.

i think they are triggered when your killing blow is also a critical attack.

This.  I hate them when they occur in the middle of battle (particularly the ogre ones that take so freaking long!)  When, in the time it takes for my character to do his fancy little deathblow on an ogre, the rest of my party runs halfway across an area and kills another enemy, I think there's a problem.

There is a mod to turn deathblows off or to minimize them or to maximize them so no one should really have issues with this feature. Personally I think that people take the numbers and the ui way too seriously in this game rpg's are about atmosphere.

I would love to see some death animations based on spells.

I didn't know they existed for 50 hours ingame untill restarted as a melee character and saw a sword/dagger decapitation with my own character.

My mage character got most boss kills in my first playthrough, so I figured a certain death animation with Alistair and an ogre in some tower was a scripted event rather than a feature.

...

1 deathblow animation with alistair, morrigan, dog in the party with my mage wasn't impressive at all, after 50 hours.

Shatter patter. Most enemies shatter, and they were supposed to do so when frozen or petrified and critted when of lower levels, so that didn't feel special at all.

Especially since only the ice covering their bodies shatter and the bodies are intact.
