The ratio in DA 2 could be quite skewed if you played a male Mage too. In that case, you only 3 female companions and 5 male companions if you count Carver and Sebastian. So I'm not sure if a 3/6 ratio is unbelievable.

I think it would be amazing for Viv to be an LI.  We've never had a black woman as a LI in a Bioware game before

Isabela is black (well dark skinned), it's just that the old engine did not render the skin tone properly.

I could have sworn that David Gaider said 100% for certain that he wasn't a dreamer.  Next time, I'll make sure to site my sources if I try to invoke WoG. Regardless, it looks like spirit medium is his specialty.  At least he doesn't appear to be a spirit possessed healer though.

As far as Isabella goes, Aza is completely correct.  This is from a post I made in Vivienne's thread.

Man, that took me a few.  Here is a non modded image of Isabela from Origins.

This is for the folks that thought Isabela was light skinned in Origins.

She looks pretty dark to me.  Then add in some new graphics and an upgrade to her design.

Eh, Isabela is more of a latina than anything.  Black people aren't the only brown-skinned people in the world.  It's the features that call it, and Vivienne definitely has distinctly "black" features by comparison.

You see I'm the exact opposite. I want to romance all the cool aliens/races. When ME2 came around I found out I could romance both a Turian and a Drell I felt spoiled rotten.

I love Thane as romance. No, I dont love the romance, I obsess over it. And I love Garrus as well, but more in same terms as Varric.

But still, having two of the LIs being taken by a dwarf and a quanari does sadden me. I prefer more elves!

@Laz  True, but there is plenty of folks that though Isabela wasn't dark skinned since the get-go.  I've met plenty of black women with skin as light as Bela's. "Latins" don't exist in Thedas any more than "African Americans" do.  Sorry, minor pet peeve of mine.

Completely off topic but I've been wanting to tell you this for a while now; your avatar terrifies me.

I thought that but then I thought she was more of a dark middle eastern type, or even an Egyptian. I don't really get the latina feel from her anymore.

Yeah, I actually forgot about Isabela when I first posted.  Since we only know of Rivaini for dark-skinned people in Thedas, I'm assuming that Vivienne is Rivaini like Duncan and Isabela, but I do agree that Isabela and Duncan have features that are similar and Vivienne's features are different.  However, since we know almost nothing of Rivaini, that doesn't mean much, especially given the range of racial features on Earth.

Me too, if I was going to pick a RL nationality for her.  As it is, Isabela is amazing (my 2nd favorite LI in DA2) and Vivi is strikingly pretty.   :D

I don't care where she's from, she's fabulous.  And very very Orleisan.  If anything, Vivi sounds a little intimating and very "fierce" as some of the kids say.

While Rivain does seem to have more "dark skinned" people than anywhere else in Thedas, it might be that they just haven't been shown in DAO or DA2 very much. I bet there are certainly black (for lack of a better term) people in Ferelden, Orlais, Nevarra, Rivain, etc. Vivienne just doesn't strike me as Rivaini.

@Nat I get you, more so just speaking in ethnic equivalents.  And yes there are many black women much lighter than her, but I mostly meant that her features don't paint her as a black woman.  Coming from a largely black and mixed-race family I've seen so much of the spectrum, but Isabela doesn't strike me as being part of it.

@Justinia I can definitely see middle eastern from her as well.  Ultimately she just comes off as a tan-skinned exotic beauty.

My point is just that I can understand why someone sees Vivienne as the first black woman in the game.  Really, she is, I was shocked when I saw her for the first time myself.  Like daveliam I assume she's Rivaini, so I'm very interested in her history.

Wasn't Duncan half rivaini? Isabella might have been too, wheras Vivienne might have more pure rivaini heritage (or her heritage might come from a different part of rivain, people probably don't look the same all over the country)

Edit: Or come to think of it, all the humans on thedas descend from travelers from a different continent alltogether, right? She could have parents more recently coming from the other continent.

Something else that got translated out of the Twitter thread: An unannounced companion is going to be another archer.  The current guess is Sara.  If that's the case, I think I've got another spot in my party spoken for.  :P

Has it been made clear if the "9 companions" quote accounts for DLC characters? In the past there's always been one. I just wonder if 9 means there will be 9 default characters in the game, if it's accounting for DLC (like Sebastian, Shale), or if there will be 9+ DLC character(s), or just no DLC character this time.

Still unclear on that part, at least that's what I know

It's uncertain.  Speculation suggests that the 9 companions being shown are the ones for the core game.  There is no clue about a DLC character and we might not know about one until after the game is released.

I see, good to know. Here's hoping we won't have one.
