Honestly, I'm kind of for it being 9+ a DLC companion. There's the simple fact that I like as many companions as possible, but also, not many of them have appealed to me so far. It's a way to pad my bets, I guess.

I would love to see Cole as a companion, as a core or DLC option, either way. He's been the most interesting of the options to me so far. We've never really seen anything like him. The only spirit we got before was Justice and he was quite a bit different. More insight into the nature of spirits and demons is especially interesting to me, generally.

I see, good to know. Here's hoping we won't have one.

Hey, my girl Shale was DLC!  So we've got a 50/50 shot of a DLC character being worthwhile.

I like DLC companions but maybe I'm just greedy.  I like having more options even if they suck.

Sorry about that, I should be more clear. I was referring to Sebastian.

Ah, sounds about right.  He was, so far, one of the most disappointing characters for me.  I still maintain that he's one of the best religious characters I've seen in a very long time, and I have to give credit where credit was due.  Even then, I couldn't really care about him too much.   Mainly because of the overwhelming taste of "meh" he left in my mouth.  I did like his DLC quests, though.

I liked Leliana better as a religious character than Sebastian.

Sebastian really annoyed me. He was like 30 years old and he was still acting like a confused teenager.

I too liked the quests, yes. But his character was so fickle for my taste, which made me not care about him. Hell, I would've love to have killed him on the spot after Ander's did what he did.

But, this is not the right place to discuss this. We better get back on topic :)

Man, it's been refreshing to have something new to talk about around here, isn't it?  If you're curious about my thoughts on Seb, send me a PM and I'll link my post about him.

Anyhow, I've been bouncing around ideas about the new trees.  If there is companion-only trees again (like in DA2,) what do you think some of these guys would be?

If (and a giant If) they do something like that again, these would be my ideas.  I'm just having fun with the topic.

  • Solas: A tree with a mix of Tevinter and Dalish magic.  I pictured him easily as a healer that also has a lot of crowd control.
  • "Sera": I suspect she'll be our archer that was mentioned in the German magazine.  I completely see her as a rogue.
  • "Cullen"/Possible Templar: Obvious
  • "Hot Daddy" Grey Warden: I would go with a 2H warrior with good stuns.
  • Cassandra: Reminds me of Aveline, in a really good way.  Sword and board for her.  Similar to Aveline's.
  • Vivienne: DPS mage.  Perhaps a mix of entropy and elemental?
  • Iron Bull: He's been confirmed to be a mercenary, so I've thought he might be our dual-wielding rogue.

Please don't take me as stating anything as fact.  This is sheer conjecture and opinion, unless other wise noted.  Also, don't take it as "This is what I want from the game."  It's just what's come to mind over time.

Interesting. Since I don't think Solas comes from neither Tevinter nor the Dalish, I would give him a "Circle apostate" tree, maybe with blood magic. I agree with Sera, Cullen, Cassandra and Vivienne, but after seeing the art with the different armors, I think Grey Warden will be a sword and shield warfrior, just like Cassandra. As for Iron Bull, why do you think he's a rogue? I really see him as a 2H warrior.

But if companions end up not having specific trees (do they? did I miss something?), that would mean more flexibility. Companion-specific trees give more personality to companions, but if you don't want the specialization those companions can end up staying on the bench forever.

Most of areas are thrice the size of Korcari Wilds? Amazing!

So much to do! Exploration, lockpicking, new lore!

I have mixed feelings myself. On one hand, it sounds like a hell lot of fun to have so much exploration to do and stuff to find. But on my later playthroughs in Origins I always get easily overwhelmed by how massive the Korcari Wilds are and how much there is hidden stuff to find because I am entirely unsatisfied if I don't find and discover everything there is that can be discovered. So areas this huge might get a little tedious the same way the Wilds did to me.

But I also know that at least half the reason I find the Korcari Wilds so overwhelming and boring on later breakthroughs is because of how tedious I find Ostagar in general. On later breakthroughs when none of the origin-exclusive stuff is new to me anymore I am almost always in a hurry to get it over with. I also know that the areas in the Sacred Ashes quest in Origins are pretty big too but I never have this problem with them (and that they're actually always fun for me to play through). So it might just depend on how exactly they implement this.

The first screenshot we had of Cassandra, she was using a two-handed sword. We have seen her use both (and dev already said there were not character locked into a style anyhow).

I hope Sera would be a dual-wielding rogue.

I think "Hot Daddy" would also be a sword and shield spec guy on a different way. Maybe like a special Grey Warden fighting style, I don't know.

For the Iron Bull, I really think he's going to be the berserker-ish type in an agile way like the Arishok.

On the other companions, I pretty much agree with you.

I like the idea that has been brought forward that every companion except Varric is a blank slate spec-wise, and you can make them fill the role you need them to fill. That way I can have Cassandra do s/s, IB on melee DPS, Solas healing, and Vivienne warming the benches back at Skyhold because Maker forbid she stain the hem of her robes or break a nail.

I was thinking more of using her as bait. Those ridiculous flashy clothes are sure to attract the attention of all the archers.

I think they said you can give Varric daggers, so even he could go melee. You just can't give him a bow, he will always use Bianca for ranged.

You can make Sera dual-wield if you want.
Though I find it strange that they'd present two rogues in a row (Varric and Sera) as 'archers'. It seems possible that IB might be a dual-wield rogue...though if Cole is in, he'd for the dual-wield rogue category.

I hope you can skill any character how you want. Being forced to have Anders in my party in DA2 because he's the only healer really irked me, especially because i despised him.

Nice! Does that mean that skills won't be locked too?

Completely okay with Iron Bull as a rogue.  He seems to be tailor-made to break the qunari mold and so far the only kossith-qunari we've seen in-game have been warriors and mages.  Tallis has been the only rogue and she was born outside the qun to another race.  I think making him a rogue is an excellent idea.

I'd have like Fenris better as a rogue.  Elves are an excellent rogue-species.

I'd only buy him as a roge if they have some sort of brawler spec.

I'm just partial to rogues, and offering my two cents on something somebody above said about him being a mercenary.  The bandit (Robin Hood) is a common rogue archetype.  My first thought was that he was a warrior, but if they're shooting for being an atypical qunari, a rogue is a good way to go.

I liked Fenris the way he was, because he and Varric flipped stereotypes in fantasy.

Your gruff, angry, twohandsword-wielding berserker is an elf, your soft spoken, learned, ranged archer-type is a dwarf. I found that pretty swell.

Eh, I'm just not seeing it. I can't imagine Iron Bull being a class that would end with us speccing him with low strength.
