I have quiet a few ideas for ME4.

Starting out, instead of a cannon opening, let's throw back some info on the Trilogy and allow us as the users interact with the opening with something like them asking if we know of the Legacy of Shepard & Co to allow us certain universe forming questions or even a save import which would look at our major decisions/achievements within that save.

IE

Ending used & how it'd possibly shape the universe we'd see.

-- if defy ending used all known species extinct except the Yahg & have the Yahg either the primary enemy or fighting to get in as a member race in the Citadel.

Quarians Saved

Geth Saved

Both Saved & Co-operating

Status on Rachni

Status on Genophage

Status of Earth from the ending (EMS level influenced)

All crew members alive at the end of ME3 "including past ones" -- have them hailed as legends with statues at their home worlds or Citadel including Admiral Anderson

Depending on war resources picked up before the end battle -- Races that went extinct / are now thriving / or barely holding on now depending on how far past ME3 we're picking up at. -- Can also be influenced by items above

One thing I would love to see

World influence -- such as like a colonization type interface allowing you to sculpt a planet, both accessible in game & via mobile platforms such as phones/tablets/consoles/etc.  So say I start my game on the PC, be able to connect to it and influence it from an Xbox One, PS4, Android, Apple product, etc, with all platforms able to access a single cloud save & interact on it.

Plot wise :) I trust them but have a few ideas

An advanced civilization is going through what went through on the ME Trilogy and after hearing the heroic exploits of our Galaxy they crossed the void between Galaxies for help before it's too late.

The Yahg become more troublesome than the Krogan during the Krogan Rebellion

The reapers become a more permanent fixture in the galaxy "if destroy wasn't selected" and no longer bound by cycle have them trying to reclaim systems to resurrect the races they each represent, or open relays that bring on dangers beyond their control in their weakened state.

The Rachni "if they survived" trying to gain a place on the Citadel and causing trouble while trying to colonize new worlds.

The "Keepers" starting to shrug off the controls of the Reapers and starting to show their own culture on the Citadel.

More thoughts to come, lol I have a ton of them.

First off i want to say that i don't think your ideas are wrong as they are an opinion so there is no right or wrong. I do however want to counter your point...

I would prefer a cannon history the reason is that ME lost its way with the "I win" R/P Dialogue options and the removal of all Virmire style choices from the series. There isn't a single major plot choice after Virmire where Shepard can't save everyone and only one other choice in the Series that has NO effect on the game with the two missiles one targeting the colony's spacedock the other targeting the colony's capital. So its a choice that isn't a real choice as it has no impact except you R/P score.

I can't think of a Single hard choice Shepard has to make in ME2 or ME3, in all the situation Shepard can use a morality based "I win" Dialogue option to save Everyone. hell the only people that can die in ME3 are Mordin Solas and a terminally ill Drell which dies regardless of your actions. You can save the Rachni, the Geth, Quarians and the Krogan. Not once are you given any hard choice. Not once does the game say you only have the resources to save one group who do you save?

You would think that in the biggest crisis that hit the galaxy since it was formed you'd think there would be SOME casualties that some group couldn't be saved, nope the Messiah Shepard can save them all. I want a cannon history where there is an actual IMPACT on the universe not it was  hard war and lets go back to the status quo. I want to see one or two races whipped from existence not because I hate the races but rather because I like them and want there to be a sense of loss from the reaper invasion. I want them to address the failing they made in allowing for the "Shepard saves everyone" result. Virmire was a great fork in the series because it forces a loss on the series, one Shepard can't magic away and save everyone. Its really the only one in the series and that is a shame, they tried to show the impact of the war on Shepard with the loss of the boy which according to the concept art was designed to represent all the people Shepard couldn't save on earth but it runs completely hollow. Yet seeing a Squad member visiting you from the past who doesn't make it would be a real gut wrencher and good story telling because the player would feel loss. Loss is a vital component of story telling something they understood in ME1 bust seem to have lost in ME3 and the audience isn't suppose to like it, but it makes for a great story which over all the audience will enjoy. I think part (as in a portion not the whole) of the reason the ME3 endings bother so many people is that there is no sense of loss and your choices at the end reflect this. All the "better" endings, as in harder and needing more War Assets are consequence free choices aka Control and Synthesis. Only Destroy actually has consequences for EDI and the Geth.

We can't change the past game play choices of the series but we can ask for them to make ME4 with real loss and scares based on the reaper invasion. I really don't think any "official" version of ME4 should allow for Shepard being able to save Everyone. I also think that Control as an ending is out because I really don't want a bunch of reapers enforcing "the rules" as this limits story telling and synthesis is just space magic. Poof all life in the universe is now organic and synthetic and it sucks to be you if you are on a planet that has only developed to the hunter gatherer level as you have no technology to repair your new magically induced synthetic parts, hope it didn't replace anything crucial, sucks to be you. That leaves destroy which means the geth are dead, EDI is dead, the reapers are dead.

Loss is an integral part of mature storytelling it is representative of the world we live in and i really don't think that the ME series will be done any favours if you create it without any loss and i mean species level loss. We should feel a sense of loss in ME4 because they just fought the biggest war in galactic history it should not be all rainbows and unicorns. We should be nostalgic for the first series is some ways, as it was a time in the MEU before the scares of war. The universe should be like Europe in 1919. In shock and a bit stunned by the horrors of the first world war or in this case the Reaper war.

Yeah, that's the biggest issue with the ME series. Majority of the time, you can save everyone, make peace, and get bonuses. And if you picked any choice otherwise, you were really just sabotaging yourself intentionally. Which isn't bad from a roleplaying standpoint, but from a game standpoint, it's not really a hard choice, it's just "Well, I guess I want less content". Because if there's one thing I learned from my Renegade Playthrough of the series, is that you were more rewarded for being good, and had less content if bad. And that was pretty much the consequence. Less content.

I have a few ideas, people here have some great ideas, some I agree with and others I don't... but there is one thing I consider exceedingly important.

If me4 is gonna have multiplayer... It should have text chat.

It's a tiny thing, that can turn an online gaming experience from run of the mill to... fun great game... with the ability to keep people playing as only social interactions can.

Not saying that me4 should have multiplayer or whether it should focus on singleplayer. Valid points for each. Personally I enjoy me3 mp. Dislike that is was forced on people only interested in singleplayer. Just saying that if it's gonna have mp, it should take full advantage of mp, which includes social interactions.

Aw, really? I always felt like this dlc was kinda fanboy-fodder. Yes, some nice flashback-moments but in general a bit uninspired and unoriginal with this clone- gone-bad-story.

I hunger for a bit more variety in gameplay and more Rpg-elements.

And i wished the develpers would add a bit more content we've never see before.

ME3 felt to me like: Different but still the same. No new features (except MP - which i don't like), no new, fresh ideas, no real step up.

For story: I hope it's not again this cliche "save the galaxy" storyline, but something different. Like being  part of an expedition... or helping the Batarians to find a new world to settle... or hell, playing a smuggler who gets to be hunted by the whole galaxy after a job went wrong and he has to clear things.

And i hope, the main character will not again be some kind of "Marine"-guy. Shepard felt already  a bit to much like a Master-chief wannabe to me.

Citadel DLC was for end of trilogy farewell but no i wouldn't want to see it repeated unless similar multi game circumstances happened again.

I want to see a refocusing on the roleplaying elements, control over the protagonist's character, small as well as big choices, proper side missions.

I agree too i would prefer a move away from the marine for a new character as much as i liked Shep(especially the freedom of ME2). Given their focus on N7 i think that's probably unlikely. I think the notion of a expeditionary force is probably the most likely.

Biggest thing for me?

Playable non-humanoid aliens, and non-humanoid aliens as squad mates.

It always annoyed me that the selection of races for the MP was basically re-skinned humans. Everybody, had to carry at least one gun. All characters had to walk upright. Etc. I know that the team was restricted to using a humanoid skeleton to build the various kits off of, and I applause them for their ingenuity, but for ME:Next, I would like to see non-humanoid characters as playable options.

A perfect example would be the Rachni, I want to play as a melee focused, space bug. When I say melee focused, I don't mean a character that carries a huge hammer around, but still has to bring at least a pistol to battle; I am talking about an alien kit that doesn't use guns period. I want to skitter across the field of battle, pitting my natural armor, claws, and acidic spit against the technology of my enemies.

Geth stalker ME1 always wanted to play as that.

What I would love to get with ME4 from the top of my head:

(Please try to take it with a grain of salt - this is spontanious ...)

Dear BioWare ...

What I want to make a return:

1. The weapon system from ME3 ...

... with the great variety of weapons, the capability of the PC to choose freely inbetween the types of weapons, the weapon-mods,  the ammo powers, the weapon-weight-system or the loadout-management.

(If you can improve upon that sytems - fine! But do not (over-)simplify any of this!)

2. The three main powers ...

... Tech, Biotic and combat skills.

(Not that I have any real reason to doubt that they will return but I like 'em.)

3. The partition into six classes in ME always made a great deal of sense to me ... Keep that variety up!

4. All the awesome races and their cultures! Just great races and NPC characters all around ...

5. A big squadmate cast like in ME2! The variety of characters, classes and the combination variety of squadmates was much more intersting in ME2 than in ME3, naturally. But since I felt the character-range to choose from in ME3 too small ... I would like to get a ME2 cast again!

What I like to see next and things that could be improved upon:

1. I want to see more of the cultures!

I would really like to see cities with real culture - let me see an Asari city or an Elcor town or something like that ... I just want to see more of their culture and their lives more in-depth than before!

2. I would love to pick all the powers for my main character myself!

A thing that really bugs me is the predefined confinement of the classes in ME ...

If we could get the chance to individually decide which setup we are gonna use out of a great pool of class powers that would be much more satisfying to play with! There are several classes in ME which have several or even many powers I don't like in particular and really wish I could change for another power of the same classification (Tech, Biotic, Combat) ... At least in the second playthrough with an imported ME4 character I would like to get that chance! Many fans play the game over and over - we want to be able to switch it up a little more. Not everybody plays on PC and on console there are no mods for this available!

3. Ease of use for players who do their "X"-playthrough in "new-game-plus"! ... OR ... "The freedom to choose"!

There are some hoops I really don't enjoy jumping through ... for a long time now! Several things that get REALLY GRINDY after a while!

When I start a new playthrough for any imported ME3 (or rather ME4 then) character ... I don't want to have to unlock and upgrade all the weapons again if I have done that on other playthroughs with other classes already! If I have done that several time it really becomes a chore and it is now fun or of any kind of help for me - it just becomes an annoyance!

Also, very important: If I import a current character (ME3 or then ME4) and this character has everything unlocked (weapons on level ten, every mod on level five and bought every armor ...) I want to be able to choose how I play this character!

I want to be able to choose for every playthrough freely ... which sex this character has, which history or background my character has and even be able to choose my class freely with each new re-imported character! Because I don't want to have to unlock everything from scratch just because I want to roleplay differently this time round! Just because I have played my character as a male Vanguard last time should not confine my to this sex or this class! I want to be able to change my up-leveled character into whatever suits me next! This is supposed to be a RPG-subgenre !!! So ... let me roleplay how I wanna roleplay! I really enjoy my freedom when games can provide that and ME never respected the need for freedom regarding roleplay when it comes to their imported characters ... Please make this easy for us and unshackle the chains of past decisions and just leave this "we want the player to get attached to his character ..." - "attitude" behind. No one benefits from that!

It is an empty frase and has no base in reality for any RPG-subgenre ... People love to play your games and to switch it up as much as possible! What on the other hand nobody enjoys ... is to chore through anything to get to the state or place they wanna play !!!

A small example: The Cerberus armor sets that got included with the Citadel DLC are a good example for a decision that we are irreversibly stuck with when made in the first playthrough. Once we win one of the three armors, in the Armax-Arsenal-Arena, we can never get the other two in consecutive playthroughs with this imported character ... That is an annoyance! I want to win or buy all three of them - seriously!

4. Controls!   (I play on console)

At least 90% of my deaths come to pass because the devs put the function for the cover-mechanic on the same button as the run-mechanic and interact-mechanic! "90-freaking-percent" of the time! I have played a ton of ME3 and the game is not hard for me on nightmare at all. I can easily stomp everything that get's in my line of sight in seconds ... But still I die here and there. It is frustrating as hell to me when that happens because it is 90-95% of the time related to getting "accidentally" into cover when running or when trying to interact with something (like the Thanix-missle-launcher on earth ... I try to hit the activation > get into cover unwantedly > Reaper-beam hits me > I die! ... It is the last combt action you perfomr in  the whole game ... and I die - miserably! Fantastic ...)

My wishlist:

1. The crew of your ship actually shown participating in large-scale combat, not just sittin' pretty on the ship, I would like to have the option to deploy them along with my main team on some missions.

2. Omni-tool works somewhat like the Pip-boy in the radio aspect. If we're going to be doing alot of exploring as Bioware would suggest, we're gonna need some good tunes.

that's what comes to mind now. However, i am replaying the mass effect series right now, so... yeah....

Honestly i'm just curious how they're gonna blend all the choices you made in ME3 into this new game....

That Pip-boy idea is interesting. Even more if we get a different camera angle and actually use the omni-tool. Probably won't happen though, too much work.

I was thinking that it'd be a rather cool way to deal with your inventory and status as well. kinda a cross between the pip-boy system in Fallout and the Dimensional Compression in Ultraviolet.

My ideas:

1. No DLC. No DLC. And no DLC.

1.1. No microtransactions aka no pay2win.

1.2. No Dungeon Keeper milk'em phonegames renamed to Mass Effect aka no virtual beggar scams.

2. No selling thin air aka selling nothing aka seasonpass scam.

3. No bears aka no Dragon Age: Bears aka no endless respawns aka no godlike undying mobs.

4. No plotholes aka no ME3 ardat yakshi aka no ME3 etc.

5. No DX crashes unfixed for three months after the release.

If they dare to do this, we'll receive a game of decade.

If they don't dare to do this, I'll wait for some 50+ percent off discount before I buy it.

I wonder if they bother reading this stuff. I really do not want to see another mass effects. I can see if they called it something else. It would be very hard to explain away the kaleidoscope ending. The endings are so different it would be as confusing as the ending was anyway lol. think they need to do something about around the topic of those that followed the reapers or go off of the rackni queen. Those would be good. But anyway the thing is almost out. next year so...

Primary:

something similar to the origin-stories in DA:O + playable races

more peaceful encounters, there should be problems that do not require pointing a gun on em

more city like maps.

character build system more similar to ME1

the squad should not just revolve around the player ( stuff like the haer'dalis aerie romance in BG2 comes to my mind) people should leave if they totally hate you ...well they should be able to hate you in the first place

More Lore

no shep/hawke ripoff

No bears aka no Dragon Age: Bears aka no endless respawns aka no godlike undying mobs.

Optional:

space fighting

Probaly wont gonna happen:

pretend there never was a starchild

free dlc like ME1 had

Actually, Samara's dialogue and the Codex in ME2 contradict eachother.

Samara states that only three Ardat-Yakshi exists, while the codex says that around one percent of asari dwell on the AY spectrum.

In ME3, it is the codex version that is taken into account. Whether this was a wise choice or not is up for debate.

It's not a matter of wise choice or not. It actually shows that the player can't play Mass Effect like any other game : there are different level and the explicit level of the story (the events and characters interactions) is not enough to understand the game.

Sure people can say that it's not a wise choice, but the entire trilogy is written this way so they have to say the same about the whole trilogy, and it's Mass Effect that they don't like (or they only like the superficial level).

Why are we talking about choices? It was Bioware's mess that should have been fixed.

If codex was wrong, it could have been patched right away.

If Samara's dialogue was wrong, they hired the same actress later twice (if we'll accept that Citadel was not just cutout real ending after Shepard survives) and they could pay her to say one sentence differently then patchitup back in ME2.

But they just don't care.

Of course it's not the only plothole I just used it as an example.

That's your opinion. Mine is different.

Anyway, since it seems devs are open for suggestions on social networks, blogs and everywhere else except here on the official forum, that leaves me no other option but to suggest just one thing more.

Space Bears. In Mako.

I have seen somewhere idea, and I liked it, that ME4 main character is some Cerberus of N7 officer who wakes up after long hibernation, deep in Reapers or other galaxy space under Reaper  domination. Maybe galaxy in which reapers won final battle.

And he/she have one and only cyborg female companion like EDI.

Main romance plot is to humanize this companion.

I'd like to have romance plot maxed and rated R 18+

I liked Leviathan DLC  super ancient civilization It would be nice to explore this concept a little more. Maybe in that space there should be relics of leviathans that run from our galaxy.

What I miss in ME2 and ME3 is mystery,  twisted plot
