On another playthrough with a FemHawke and I can't seem to resist Isabela :P But I'm wondering if you can fling with her again? After your first encounter when she shows up at the house, she mentions hooking up at some place in the Hanged Man but is this possible? I just replayed DA:O and remembered how often you can hit up Zevran (unless that was part of a mod I used, I can't remember how many times I modded that game). Anyway, do you get to mess around with Isabela again? Or is it a one-off? Same for anyone else? Or do you have to have a locked in romance to get the benefits?

I've only just recently played this game and only just the once at that but I can answer one question here: Isabela's line in Act 1 about how you should swing by and see her doesn't actually open anything up in that Zevranese regard, no. :P

I'm pretty sure you can only have sex with her the once.

Romance scenes are only played once. IMO, the romance in DA2 was poorly implemented, forced and rushed as part of the game.

And rather empty compared to DAO. I think when I finally play it again, IF I play it again, I will not bother with a LI because really they are quite empty and nothing about them is moving... sort of the way I no longer bothered with romance in ME1. It just wasn't good enough for me to feel like I wanted to have one of them become annoying in my future about the fact that I (barely) romanced them at that point.

Poorly implemented might be the understatement of the century. I chose Anders then killed him for his actions. None of them really inspire me to want to romance them either. Anders was working off of love from Awakening. Now nathaniel might have been nice but he had no place among this band of nuts.

Edited to add: Varric might have been intersting. He was one of the four that I found to be pretty well rounded and overall companion worthy though it's not until you level up that I think it's really a useful companion for gameplay purposes. But his character is probably one of the best which had he been romance worthy, I totally would have gone there because he was pretty sane and a good guy. Shame they left him out because that might have been worth it.

The romance in DA2 was hard to avoid and I agree with your sentiments on it. The problem with trying avoiding it, outside of it being beyond a contrivance, is that it is forced upon the PC. Just seeing the choice (break the heart icon) in the wheel dialogue gives the air of forcing the issue. This is why I liked the the nuances of the dialogue in DA:O, as it gave me the feeling I could flirt, reject or ******-off the (potential) LI,  on being whether or not I want her/him to be an LI.

I know it is just a game, but IRL, I don't push icons across to express my feelings. Not only that, the text in DA2  most times didn't match the intended choice of the icon. I use words, so reading and choosing the dialogue for the LI effect was awesome in DA:O. As an aside, I didn't mind the romance in ME1 since it didn't seem forced to me and it led to confrontations playing two interests at the same time, same as DA:O. What I liked in DA:O better than any of them, is that my LI of choice, had an effect with plot states; that's hugely important to me.

It didn't have an effect in ME1 and somewhat of an effect in DA2. I also liked the fact that I could tell one of my companions to it the road if I no longer wanted them in my party or as a choice of companions. As an aside, I admit I really didn't pay much attention to Anders in DAA, mostly because I didn't care for the expansion all that much. While the story theme kept up with DA:O, it just didn't flesh out as much as I thought it would. I only played through it twice, so maybe I am missing out on things having read quite a few comments by you and quite a few others regarding Anders and Nathaniel in Awakening.

I agree with you in general on the ME1 aspects. I just found it to be rather bland after some games of it. It was only about four conversations or maybe five. DAO was so much better for all the reasons you stated. You could really explore it as you would in real life. It was much more open. Sure, you could guess pretty well at what choices would not go over well (though not always with Alistair because he kind of liked it when you were a wiseass to him), but that's how it is in real life. DA2 with the big heart option feels like it was designed for mentally deficient people or like they did it because otherwise you would have no idea that it could trigger romance since essentially some of the conversation wasn't really romantic or not clearly so.

I'm playing another run now as I wanted to do the rivalry with Anders and see if it seems better than way, and I'm avoiding all the romances so far. Might go for Fenris since I'm running a warrior who has no tolerance for mages who resort to blood magic. But I feel like it will be weird and forced. The one with anders was pretty lame. Ah well, if I want the romance aspect I'll just go back to DAO.

I love the DA2 romances far more than the DA:O ones :P They feel very organic and are full of trials and tribulations and what not. The final kiss scene at the Gallows is very romantic <3

There is another point in the game where it seems that Hawke can hook up with Isabela again, and that's if you choose the flirt option after gifting her the Rivaini talisman. You don't see anything, but it appears to happen off camera.

And again after "A Murder of Crows" ... if you're the "sharing" sort. xD

The DA2 romances are rather easy... No effort is needed to follow one. Like someone already said, they are shallow. My first and only love from BioWare games will be Jack. She is one of the most complicated/funny/adorable/frustrating characters I have met. And I really like her the way she is.

Yes it's a shame,as Isabela's was one of my favourite love scenes in DA2...That woman has passion!
