As a compulsive quest hound, I hate skipping missions so I rarely ever get to see special dialogue for quests you neglected. What happens in Act 2 if you ignored him in Act 1?

He shows his true colors as the little brat he is. Also more strident about the Qun. And writes you off as just another rabble rouser or sellsword.

I understand being a quest hound, but sometimes taking on a quest assumes too much of a certain position in matters. I've noticed that in several of their games. I like it when your character's personality is being shaped by how you do things. Not "if" you do them.

My Hawke was always in it for the money, which was the only thing I really cared about anyway.

I forgot how much I get out of that quest. I'm usually pretty good though. It's one of the only quests I avoid, and I still have a 100 gold in Act 2 (Rune of Fortunes ftw).

Admittedly, I enjoy killing The Winters too much not to do it anyway, just like I enjoyed offing Evet's Marauders.

I don't care for the Winters. But that's basically how Saemus sees you in Act 2.

Which is how I prefer it. I don't want to be a hero until Act 3.

Kind of like how I like pissing Aveline off the whole game until the very end. Rivalry is way better.

Are there any YouTube videos that show things like Saemus in Act 2 without his Act 1 quest completed or maybe Aveline in Act 3 without doing The Long Road? I heard she acts very differently.

I've been thinking about that whole situation with the qunari and Petrice on a recent playthrough where I did side with Petrice (one of the perks of being aggressive). It's actually very gray considering these zealots, despite being the aggressors, have been duped into believing abducting the qunari was approved by the Grand Cleric. Also, qunari by their very nature are enemies because of what the qun demands of outsiders; conversion or death. So do you really kill your own mislead people to save qunari who would collar you up or likely kill you for being a mage outside of the qun if given the opportunity because that's what the Viscount wants? Yet helping the zealots would almost ensure war within the city (which happens anyway).

I don't look on Youtube much. Sounds like a difficult thing to query. It's not much content anyways. After dialoguing with him once, you just click on him and he has different lines. He's just more aggressive about the Qun, instead of slowly siding with them.

If you decide to go this route, just remember to go to the section on the Wounded Coast where his quest is before his quest is actually active. There's a fire resistance rune recipe there. You just have to kill random Tal Vashoth. Once you activate the quest, you'll never be able to get that rune recipe.

A point people make for the qunari over Petrice is that they don't lie. That's not true. They may lie less often and respect honesty more, but they certainly are capable of falsehood.

Ex: In DA:O Sten declares the qunari signed some treaty because their enemies believed it mattered.

Ex: Tallis lies to you about her whole plan in MotA.

Ex: The qunari lie to the Viscount about waiting for another ship to take them home.

I think the Viscount made Kirkwall weaker by aiding the qunari so extensively. Even the Arishok looks at this appeasement as a form of weakness. The qunari cannot show gratitude to "bas" as the Viscount expected. By giving them lands, placating their demands, and tasking Hawke to kill Kirkwall's own people he just made Kirkwall easier to conquer. No matter how honest you are and how hard you try to keep the peace the qunari turn on the city all the same

Can't you just buy such rune recipes? The only armor rune I ever bothered with was the rune of protection and then the rune of valiance in Act 3. Elemental resistance runes are too circumstantial for me.

Huh. Good question. I don't even know if fire resist is available elsewhere. I know you can buy some of them, but not necessarily all rune recipes.

I'm almost certain I had the fire resistance rune on all my playthroughs. Most armor runes are garbage though like I said. I prefer this over games like Elder Scrolls games where enchanting becomes such a headache.

I suppose the only other rune I'd consider is Torpor's barrier rune if your character is evil. When I have taken his deal though I've always gone for the 6 attribute points.

It's not my ideal either, but it can be useful against bosses.. if you know what to prepare for. Mostly I just use Rune of Fortune for armor.. That's worth it. If all companions use it, that is.

Oh right. I've used that too, but just one on my boots or something when the armor boost would only be like 6 points. I didn't even know it stacks if other companions have it. The developers cherry-picked just what stacks in the game. Ex: Spells like heroic aura don't stack while I think haste does (even though the spell is bugged).

Yeah, put them everywhere, on every companion. There's a good guide here. You'll have a lot more gold after every Act.

@StreetMagic

I'm curious. I know you've supported Petrice but what do you do about the dead qunari? Do you burn them to hide the torture? When I sided with Petrice I burned the bodies because 1) + companion rivalry 2) knowledge is power and I didn't want the Arishok to know anything about what happened. I know through meta-gaming it works out, but I wasn't stupid enough to go to the qunari compound afterward and tell the Arishok I killed his delegate/men.

My rogue and mage burned them.. just seemed the natural thing for them to do. My warriors are more blatant. But I don't even go back to talk to Arishok much with them (except with the rogue, who thinks they can pull a fast one).

What I loved about my Hawke that did help Petrice and burned the bodies is how she was indirectly responsible for a lot of the chaotic events of the game. Then she'd help fix them and was labeled a hero.

Ex: She aided Petrice further antagonizing the qunari to rebel; then saved the city to become champion

Ex: She let Isabela keep the relic further antagonizing the qunari to rebel; then saved the city to become champion

Ex: She helped Anders blow up the Chantry through plausible deniability and didn't even kill him (making peace even less likely); then saved the mages to become a symbol of mage freedom

It's amusing how Hawke clearly wasn't a peacemaker yet people looked to her to be one and rewarded her for fixing the mess when chaos ensued.

That also makes it doubly amusing to rival Aveline.

I burnt the bodies, too. Don't care whether or not it fools the Arishok, I just do not want them to have images of their tortured and dead brethren in their heads as a motivator when they declare war on Kirkwall (I think we all saw it coming).

It's kind of funny to see the qunari break the chains and free themselves when you side with Varnell. Like, what were they thinking all that time?

"Hey, let's just let this whole torture session play out a bit, see how far they go. AH! Ooh, that was a good one.."

I was just thinking about that! Aveline's words are verbatim, "Who are you talk about responsibility? You're a highwayman. You stumbled into being champion." It was so funny because it was so close to the truth for my Hawke. Her personality was much like Isabela's except the aggression: an ethical criminal with reasonable self-interest who occasionally did something selfless. She became champion because she was a powerful mage at the right place at the right time and knew it would be favorable/profitable to save the nobles from the qunari.

I think the funnest part of rivaling Aveline, besides the time she beats the **** out of you, is rubbing in her face just how corrupt she actually is. It always amuses me when people call Aveline uncorruptable. Principled? Sure. Good? Absolutely. Lawful? Only if she feels like it.

Lol I never knew Aveline can beat up Hawke. My aggro blood mage is gonna get on her bad side for sure.

It is glorious. It's one of those arguments you don't even remember what it started about, but just becomes a chance to let loose and beat the face of that insufferable person who is way too important to you. At the end, Hawke has this expression of 'are you done yet?', and there's a perfectly appropriate chance to sort-of-kind-of make up.

(Though, IIRC, it's actually a fight about moving on past Wesley.)

The Act 3 Questioning Beliefs is better as a rival. Hawke taunts her until Aveline looses it to make her realize she wants to stay in Kirkwall. It's just more fun to make things difficult for her like in her Act 3 companion quest when you accuse her of coddling her men.

Yeah, I love Aveline, that's why I rival her. It's better. She's the perfect foil to my aggressive FemHawke -- the noble knight and the scoundrel rogue. Ilda didn't hate Aveline, just enjoyed pushing her buttons, like she was the older sister she never had.

I also love to rival Anders as a mage. It horrifies him, and doesn't allow him to accuse you of just being an anti-mage bigot.
