@PatrickWeekes: Minor clarification for those versed in LGBT terminology: we say bi for simplicity, but yes, the Iron Bull is pan.

What's the difference? ![]()
What's the difference?
As someone that has identified as pansexual for ~10 years now, to me it's that gender has absolutely no bearing on my attraction to someone--it's basically irrelevant (except for preferred pronoun usage, etc., but that has nothing to do with attraction and everything to do with respect).
But there are a few other definitions people use; I'm really curious about how Patrick himself defines it.
What's the difference?
bisexual people fall in love with men or women. pansexual people love women, men and people who don't identify as one gender or who don't have a specific gender or who are transsexual.
I'm so happy that he's been officially confirmed as a romance ![]()
My Qunari rogue is going to be all over that!
The only thing I would like is some hi-res images of him, all of the other characters on the bioware website have 2/3 and he only has one but with his back turned. I know we can see him in the vid's but would be great to have an official wallpaper!! ![]()
Sorry if this has been already brought up, I can't get on here often enough.
Not sure if this is accurate 100% maybe someone who identifies as pan can say if this is accurate but I thought this explained it pretty well

Oh. Ok. Thanks for the info peeps.

I have two people in my life who identify as pan: For one of them, they would identify with this comic to a T. For the other, they have sexual and romantic attraction to femininity; they could be in a relationship with a pre or post operation female-identified transexual, women, people who are non-gender conforming, etc; BUT they only feel sexual attraction to men, and not romantic attraction and they couldn't see themselves falling in love with a man. Both of these people I know are in their 20s so anything could change, but I thought I'd throw that in the mix to express that there are differences in what attraction means to pansexuals, as there are differences for everyone else.
On that note - we're all losing our minds that pansexual was brought up in this kind of forum (by which I mean video games, and not this website). This is crazy exciting! (:
Thanks for the clarification on that, I'm not 100% about any type of sexuality to be honest but the comic series of the strip I posted sometimes gives interesting information about things like that (most of anything I know about seems to come from webcomics these days^^; )
I'm curious though as to how Iron Bull being pansexual will be shown or talked about (if at all) in the game since unless I've missed some big info we can only play as male or female and not anything such as trans or genderqueer (I apologize if I"m using either of those terms wrong my knowledge on these things is very limited) I wonder if this means we'll have any transsexuals or transvestite NPCs in the game? I would say I doubt it but didn't the last two games had someone along those lines working in the brothel?
Probably silly of me to get into this here of all places, but I take exception to the idea that bisexual people aren't attracted to people who are transgender and/or outside the gender binary-- I know a lot of people who fall under the trans umbrella and identify as bisexual. I'm nonbinary and I identify as bisexual.
It's a point of contention in queer circles, and admittedly even I don't really know how to explain the difference, or if there even is one. People often cite the "bi" in bisexual as meaning "two" when they say it applies only to men and women, but it's more accurate to say it means that you can be attracted to your own gender as well as other genders. I identified as pansexual for a while when I was first learning about gender variation, but gave it up for the vague umbrella-term "queer", and then went back to bisexual when I realized a lot of my misconceptions about bisexuality were rooted in biphobia.
This is not to say the labels are meaningless, or aren't important to anyone who chooses them. I just hate to see people explain it in contrast with pansexuality as if bisexuality is inherently trans-exclusionary when nothing could be further from the truth.
I'm really happy about Iron Bull, and doubly happy to see that the writers are making such a conscious effort to explore queer identities and representation in this way!

Very lovely written post, I have much of the same outlook/experience as you. Thanks for sharing. :3

I think it's pretty cool, and I think it's doubly cool that the DA team is interested in exploring other options that straight/gay/bi.

Yes, I have to say that I'm curious if it will be brought up in conversation with Bull. I hope they do and that they do not exclude information like they had Anders do when talking about Karl.
edit: poor grammar was poor. lol

Indeed, I agree. I didn't like how Anders talked about his sexuality more with a male Hawke than with a female. I hope IB is equally as open about himself to any kind of pc he makes a relationship with.
Ack! You caught my grammar snafu in your quote. LOL
Haha oops! xD If it makes you feel better, I read it in my mind like there was no error! hahaha

Agreed 100% I really have not liked how they have handled bi men in the past (excluding Fenris since I have no completed his romance or tried with a male Hawke so I have no idea how its handled with him) Anders keeping his relationship with Karl away from a female Hawke was understandable from his point of view but I still wished he had shared ti with her as well, and Zevran made it sound like he was trained to sleep with men and did it cause he had to not cause he was attracted to men (at least that was my impression that Zevran looked as men as an acquired tastes) so I hope they don't do that with Iron Bull actually even though I plan to mostly romance him with female PCs I really hope that he leans a little more towards men mostly because I've never seen that so far and it would be interesting for me to see a bi or pan man who prefers men and is open about being bisexual/pansexual with the pc regardless of their gender.

Aw, thanks. You didn't need to do that though. ![]()
@Huldra: It's been awhile since I did a Zev romance, but I thought he came across as ok with either. Now I need to go back to my m/m Zev romance to remind myself what actually went on. ![]()
Maybe he'll say something similar to Oberyn Martell from Game of Thrones in some dialogue concerning his sexuality:
"When it comes to war I fight for Dorne, when it comes to love — I don't choose sides."

Ah yes, and after that he slaps the inquisitor's butt.

Yep, this is partially why my personal definition of pansexuality is what it is--I really don't like the definitions that make bisexual people transphobic/trans-exclusionary by default. Especially since I only recently started hearing bisexuality and pansexuality being pitted against each other like this; when I first found out about pansexuality/started identifying as pan, I don't remember anyone acting like pansexuality was some "more inclusive" form of bisexuality.
I have no idea where that even started.
I just wanted to express that contrary to your opinion, I feel that Zevran is the strongest bisexual character I've ever encountered in media. I understood that he was promiscuous, but I actually felt that it was part of his personality build and not someone's interpretation of what it meant to be bisexual.
I have high hopes for Bull based on this.
I didn't romance either Fenris or Anders with a male character.
Maybe it was just the way he worded it for me but Zevarn just kind of came off as less of 'I enjoy both men and women' and more as 'I mainly enjoy women but guys are fine too I guess' Though that is just my opinion and I'm glad he came off better to other people I'm probably held up on the experience of my first Zevran playthrough as a male Warden where I really thought Zervan was turning him down because he was male so I admit that colors my opinion of the romance for me. But I am glad he doesn't come off that way to you ![]()
I have high hopes for Iron Bull as well. ![]()
Neither have I so I can't speak for their romances which is why I only brought up Anders mentioning Karl (which from Anders perspective I get why he brought it up only to male Hawke I just wish he trusted my female Hawkes with that information as well)

I'd give this an actual like but for the first time I'm out of them.
So this'll have to do *Likes*
damn this thread for stealing all of them away too many awesome posts
