After watching Bull's romance playout on YouTube, I think his sexual interaction with the player character borderlines on bestiality. While I think the scene is rather entertaining, I also got sick of the sex with a part animal logic. I think it’s disgusting.

 

BioWare went past homosexuality and straight into animal sex.

 

It is gross, immoral, and disgusting.

 

While I think this game should be praised for a sense of diversity, I think the bestiality message behind Bull’s character gets it tossed in the trash.

 

Hetrosexual Relations = Perfectly Fine

Homosexual Relations = Perfectly Fine

Transexual Relations = Perfectly Fine

 

Bestiality Relations (having sex with half a bull) = Crosses the moral line.

 

I don't care how people rationalize the sex scene with Bull. it is disgusting.

I love The Iron Bull, but his romance was rather lackluster in my opinion. I think it's because of the lack of personal involvement like how Zevran had Rinna, and Fenris had the Fog Warriors. I was really expecting him to detail a story of an event that had particularly disturbed him, or maybe even the event that "broke" him and made him decide to get re-educated. The scene that takes place after his personal quest is probably the closest you get to that. He's pretty much been a qunari info dump otherwise.

 

Fortunately I've been running with Cole and Iron Bull alot and Cole gets into Iron Bull's memories quite frequently. In one banter, Bull tries to test Cole's "mind-reading" by asking him what number he's thinking and Cole starts rambling about Iron Bull's memory of a time he had rescued a girl who was in the middle of getting raped. In another he mentions a moment in which young Iron Bull seeks comfort from a tamassran because of how hard his role in the Qun is. Also, you can literally see the struggle on his face during his personal quest. He's softer than he lets on.

 

I think he's basically trying to play tamassran to inquisitor. He knows how hard the role of a leader is and he's offering more than just sex to relieve that stress. In his final scene, he talks in a soft, soothing tone in the beginning very much like a dom does to a sub during aftercare. It's a time when a sub can feel especially vulnerable, so it may be easier to unload any problems weighing on inquisitor's mind at the time as well.

I think an easy way to make the final scene more romantic would have been to have the inquisitor naked and the two of them cuddling at the time. Then the door opens and Bull is quick to throw a blanket over Quizzy, as he sits up displaying the qunari D to distract the intruder, thus "protecting" Quizzy from unwanted eyes. Cue rest of scene as normal.

I thought it was nice to have a healthy, consensual, understanding BDSM relationship, myself... totally unexpected, but in a good way. I'm pretty sure literally every other relationship in DA has been pretty vanilla, aside from maybe Zevran wanting to be tied up all the time lol.

Just finished my first playthrough earlier today and I have to comment, since I was very much looking forward to Bull......I didn't enjoy it.  (sigh)

After the very first romance sex scene where nothing but mild implications of an aggressive nature were suggested I'm suddenly given dialogue options that inform me that a very different sexual encounter occurred outside of my expectations.   This left me feeling BEYOND uncomfortable since I have no idea about the scenario I'm basing intimate emotional and sexual decisions on.  It honestly ended up feeling like I passed out after a great party and woke up mysteriously sore, trying to feel through the dark to piece together WTF we're talking about.  A dialogue option that says "You're not my master"?  Really?!  That's what you're walking me into with no context??  That entire post-sex conversation made me physically uncomfortable, I cannot stress it enough, and I think it was handled very poorly for those not previously inclined to dom/sub situations.

 

And what is worse to me: in a later tavern chat you can ask if he'd ever "mix up roles" with you and he flatly says no, that you (the PC) need him to dominate you and it would insult your nature to do otherwise.  Um, HI, yes, do not declare my role in the bedroom for all eternity.  Instant turn off, I basically grit my teeth through the rest of the romance.  The scenes got better as they stopped focusing so much on the off-camera domination thing, but it was already soured for me and that was that.  I'm really sad about it because I love him as a character and there were indeed nice moments within the romance, but I won't be doing his romance again and for the first time ever in a Bioware game...I am not sticking with my first character.    

 

Some kinky sex is one thing, but the domination angle and IB's determination that "YOU NEED TO SUBMIT BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I SAY" really put me off.  If they wrote IB where he just preferred that type of sex and he needed to dominate for his own needs...okay.  I can deal with that because it would be my choice to do that for his sake.  But do not attempt to persuade me, the player, that my character needs to be dominated.  No.  

 

Side-note: Kudos that Bioware gave you plenty of options to abandon ship, at least.  I stuck it out to the end because I was so looking forward to him.

 

Happy for everyone who did enjoy it.  Bioware certainly went out there this time, gotta say.

the whole '*you* need this' is really offputting to me. Like you, I would have preferred if he said that this was the relationship he needed and/or wanted. Maybe a convo about finding something that worked for both. What does he say if you say you don't need that? It is especially weird that he tells the PC that he switches things up with the servants.

Luckily for me it doesn't bother me, but it is slightly irksome that if you ask about it being switched up it's flatly denied. I had no clue about that. They could have at least implied he'd be willing towards that. :/

That's an interesting take on it... I'm not sure why either, to be honest. I haven't completed the romance yet, but I'm admittedly kind of sad to hear that he never talks about it, in regards to himself, at least. That and his past (what caused him to 'retire') were things I was really looking forward to.

I can see it either as a ben-hassrath thing (they kind of mold the qunari people, give them roles, tools and goals - complete control) or a I-like-a-hard-challenge thing. The Inquisitor is a powerful person, to bend such a person means being really, really strong. Though there is no challenge if the "beast" can't fight for control as well

Haha that's the thing, he's such an easygoing and kind guy, but for this certain thing he's so adamant. xD It is pretty clear he likes a challenge and likes to be in control, but I just wish they had let him give an option, or compromise on the matter, seems more like him. But perhaps his role in the Qun does play a part in it and that's just really what he's comfortable with. I guess I'm just sad that this cuts off a lot of people who would have enjoyed the romance otherwise... but ah well, he is who he is.

Yea, as I said I would have been more comfortable if we had the option to switch it up and thus in my head I could handwave it that we take turns, I dunno.  Not an option, unfortunately.

 

Love the Dorian and IB hook-up!  Another reason I won't be doing Bull's romance again, I 'spose, hahaha.

I know there's an option to say "You're wrong" but I don't have a save to see what happens.  It probably was the break-up option because I can't imagine I wouldn't choose that if it didn't equal automatic break-up.  I was determined to see the romance through.

 

@Chari - I'm not scared of him, I just don't like being told what I am as if they know better.
