It raised mine too. No one likes being the dirty little secret but yeah I kind of think it's a mix of both. (I half wish it was an option with Dorian to see his reaction to see if he's as hypocritical as I think but alas).
I probably would've just taken the tsun viewpoint if not for that Bull is abusive nonsense.
That got me sideyeing most of their banter and the one I saw looking bad from that was Dorian. But I was never in support of their romance being healthy. It doesn't seem like it is at all.
BUT YES. *readies daggers* I shall defend my husbando to the death.
(That said I at least wish we could ask him what happened to his fingers and legs. There's a story there and I want to hear it
)
The thing is, Iron Bull has a lot of red-flag behaviors IMO.
Some examples:
* Bragging about his ability to emotionally manipulate people (claiming that he always knows what partners need, mentioning that his fighting style depends on projecting a persona, etc)
* Refusing to negotiate the relationship - he doesn't insist on D/s relationship because that's what he needs, he insists on it because it's what he thinks the PC needs. This is a classic tactic of emotional manipulation, the 'I'm only thinking of you tactic' (another example is Tangled's Mother Knows Best song).
* Being aggressive with personal space - not just being a big guy, but sprawling, getting into people's space, etc. This can be friendly, but it can also very easily be an intimidation tactic.
* Crude language and bragging about sexual conquests - people use this to make themselves seem more shocking/interesting/intimidating.
I don't think he is manipulative, but he has a lot of red-flag behaviors. Each person's reaction probably varies depending on their exposure to these kinds of problems, which is why there's such a wide range of reactions to him. Combine that with Dorian being unhappy/ashamed of the relationship and I can see how people would be upset.
Personally, I'm glad that Bioware put Iron Bull in and think he's a great character...but these red flag behaviors would set off my alarms enough that IRL I'd avoid him.
I'm also pretty sad that Bioware didn't go all the way and do an asexual relationship option. Iron Bull comes right out and says the Qunari separate deep emotional attachment and sex, so it would make sense for an open asexual relationship to be an option. Maybe the next game.
