"If a qunari woman really wants to fight, and has a gift for it, she becomes an aqun-athlok. The aqun-athlok joins the warriors and is treated like a male. He becomes a guy, for all intents and purposes."

A line from a banter with Cassandra, and it seems to me that Iron Bull isn't conventionally accepting of Krem at all, just following one of the Qun's weird rules. In fact, it's a pretty distasteful rule, quite akin to Iran's practice of pressuring gay people into having sex changes. He also considers Cassandra to be sometimes male.

Nah, I don't think so.

(Disclaimer: this is all IMO) The thing about Bull is that, at this point, he's basically using the Qun as a rather thin excuse for doing/believing what he already wants to do. He accepts Krem - it's just convenient that the Qun does, too. He accepts Cassandra as a warrior - luckily, there's wiggle room for that. "Fighting and drinking and breaking beds" is a convenient cover for a spy - luckily, he likes all that.

He's an incredibly open and accepting guy at heart.

Why say that thing about sometimes thinking of Cassandra as male, then?

Does he specifically say he thinks that? I thought he said something about 'depends on whether she's out of her armor or not'

I always thought of that as weird flirting, like when he says he'd buy Dorian dinner first.

It was weird flirting, I know that... I just don't know how much his beliefs informed it.

Ah. In that case, I agree with Vertigomez. Technically, aren't the Tamassrans the only ones who can say if one is aqun-athlok? If he's going strictly by the Qun, that isn't up to him. He's doing what he wants to do and finding loopholes in his religion to justify it.

I think it's ambiguous because Bull can be deliberately evasive about his beliefs, because he's afraid to examine them too closely, lest he find them lacking.

eta: which we know he does (find them lacking to some extent, I mean). At the same time, he's afraid of living without the Qun because he's terrified of turning savage and hurting people he cares about, and also going Tal-Vashoth means that maybe all those other Tal-Vashoth he killed were just people like them and he feels maaassive guilt.

Yeah, Iron Bull will say pretty much anything to make himself not question the Qun any further than he already is. He's constantly toeing the line between being Qunari and being a total heratic tal-vashoth. He also knows how to accept people and say what they want to hear.

Krem is a man. Krem doesn't identify as "I'm one of them there special snowflakes who wants to be accepted for the fact that I float between genders and therefore I want to be accepted as that." No. Krem is a man. Krem wants to be accepted as a man. Iron Bull looks at this, says Okay. You're a man. I absolutely 100% support this. Hey look if you tilt your head to the side and squint, then there's even something in the Qun that you totally are, so not only are you a man you're a totally normal man besides.

It's an Iron Bull thing to do. Saying he doesn't support trans people because of how he deals with Krem is stupid. He supports trans people in the most important way possible -- he accepts them for who they are. Period. People are constantly forgetting that for a trans person, that's the most important thing.

As far as the Qun's actual practice of Aqun-athlok, if we're going to look at distasteful processes of them, might we also look at the fact that Saarebas are abused utterly, and their perchance for mind wiping people completely if they don't agree with their philosophy? As a whole, the Qun does not accept anything regarding individuality. They are not a social justice platform, they are a machine and everyone falls into line or is cut off. The fact that they have Aqun-athlok's just shows that they value ones ability to fight and will utilize it regardless of gender, and make an allowance within their philosophy for it. That is the society Iron Bull comes from.

Our baby could be so much worse. <3 Instead he picked the positive out of everything and used that to shape his life, his morals and his values and his motivations. He may be Qunari, but the Iron Bull we meet is not shaped by the Qun alone, he's shaped from years of fighting on Seheron and posing as Tal-Vashoth for probably a little too long. I am pretty sure if you keep him with the Qun he'd end up re-educated sooner or later.

I feel silly for responding to people who are just trying to start a fight. Sigh. When will I learn?

I think Iron Bull accepts Krem in the most meaningful way possible in Thedas. By accepting him for the gender he is, standing up for him and sharing things with him to encourage him. Krem doesn't throw up his hands and be offended when Iron Bull explains aqun-athlok and go on to rant about him how that's problematic because that kind of politicing or social justice can't exist in a world that locks mages into towers, has a fully functioning slave-based society and has saarebas running around under the control of qunari. Really? Bioware is supposed to fit in non binary and proper use of pronouns and tiptoe around that issue, in the world they've created? "Hey there mr Aravaad, I know you're busy opressing your Saarebas while you kill off tevinter slaves that are forced to fight for a cause they don't believe in by blood magic used to warp their will, and will take some captive to force a magical substance down their throat that effectively lobotamizes them, but could we stop and talk about how your use of the "he/she" pronoun is opressing your comrades need to identify as a non binary gender?"

It wouldn't fit. It'd stick out like a sore thumb in the world and what Bioware is doing is fitting in trans people as neatly as they can in a way that fits the story. They used Iron Bull as their champion to give the best pro-trans message that they can, which is if you're a trans man you're just as much of a man as a cis man. Period. I think that's a beautiful message fit neatly into the game's universe by beautiful characters and anything else would be unfitting and belittling to both the story and the minority that Bioware is so beautifully trying to include.

Picking holes in that is just...\facepalm. People's rush to spew vitrol and scream 'problematic' or 'offensive' over things ends up demeaning the minority they are supposed to be defending.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that in my little example, the Aravaad in question would probably blink blankly at whoever it was for a moment and be like "wtf does gender have to do with anything?" Because Qunari put more emphassis on role than they do gender because gender is an individuality thing, something that has no place in the qun. Just another example of how much Iron Bull has embraced his Chargers as people and not just as tools. He's so far gone from qunari thinking in some ways it's sad to think about him having to get reintigrated into it at some point. :| *grabby hands* The qun will never take my Iron Bull baaaack~.

Oh, wow.

I get that Bull is not for everyone, and as much as I love the character, there were a few occasions when I would have liked the option to smack him. He has flaws, as any good character does. But I do not understand this need to twist what the game gives us to make him into some kind of monster.

The scene with Krem is a defining moment. It's the devs going out of there way to say that he supports this, and offer more insight into his personality. Otherwise, why would it be there? But no, let's twist it around and try to say he's actually transphobic despite how quick he is to shut you down if you question Krem really being a man.
