I did too.
Yeah, the Hard in Hightown was just a rip off cop books, like the whole "near retirement" and "a dirty cop on the edge" things.
I always thought of it as Varric's version of Lethal Weapon mixed with old-school noir. I could easily see it falling into other noir tropes:
It had been another sad and lonesome day in the lovely city of Kirkwall. More folks scurrying about their lives, trying make sense of it all. Me? I've been a guard a long time. Too long, some might say. Just a belly full of aches and a receding hairline is all I have to show for my lifetime of hard work for this city. I know it's time for me to retire, but I can't. The whole town is going mad. A few of us have to stay sane so everyone can sleep at night. Someone has to do the dirty work.
All the trouble started when she walked in. A dame with long legs and flashing eyes with that come-thither stare comes strolling into my office. Says she needs my services and I'm the only one that can help her. I let out a sigh. Only a lovely noble of Kirkwall could bring in so much trouble and yet be so easy on the eyes.
...And now I'm fan ficing. Off-topic.
I need more coffee badly.
