I always thought the Qunari all looking alike and the elves all looking weird was just Varric being mildly racist. I mean, look at Bethany's boobs in the first level; the man's not above taking some liberties. He just thinks elves look weird and Qunari all look alike.

Between this, Ymirr's Dorian fanart, and the Solas stuff flying around, I am so effectively screwed for romance in DAI.
He exaggerate only the part in the prologue. You can headcanon what you want though.
Varric fudges ALOT for Cassandra's benefit. There was a cut line with him talking to Hawke.
Varric: I told her everything.

It made it onto the romance thread concerning someone remembering Varric saying he finds humans to be unattractive but calling Isabella hot. It's not much to go on since it was cut, but there's other stuff, like everyone saying Meredith's gone nuts, but until the final boss no actual scenes of her doing anything crazy.
A lot of it, though, I interpreted to be what Cassandra pictured based on what Varric said. She may be picturing qunari as all looking the same and elves as being funny-looking.
Although with their high, wide-set eyes I thought they looked deer-like, which I thought was nifty.
I, too, liked the deer-eyes, if little else about the design.
Also, I have never been so glad to be attracted to and rooting for all the men (besides Cole) I've seen to be LIs. No matter who I get, I won't be too disappointed. 
An Iron Bull romance looks so nice, though. I want to play an elf or dwarf and just marvel at the size difference. Not to mention that he seems like he'll have a fun personality. I've wanted to romance a boisterous bad-boy for ages; Bioware tends to lean towards the angsty bad-boys instead, and that makes me a little sad.
