I saw this on a blog I follow, and I wanted to ask you guys what your opinions were on it?

I'm a pretty big Iron Bull fan myself, but I can kind of understand where this confessor is coming from (in terms of curiosity) - though I don't agree with it.

Personally I think it's judgmental for people to question these things because "we know so little about the character". We don't know anything about Sera and no one questions the people who want to romance her. We know absolutely nothing about DHMG and no one questions anyone who wants to romance him. More to the point, I don't see what's wrong with wanting to romance him because he's qunari; it would be nice to have a little more variety among the LI's.

Huh, that's surprising. I saw a lot of people denouncing Vivienne's haters(such as myself) because in their opinion, we didn't have enough information to hate the character, but I didn't see anyone claim we didn't have enough info to like/love/want to romance the character. It's good to know that they were at least being fair with that.

 

As for why I like Iron Bull, I will say that "attraction" doesn't enter into it for me, but I do find him appealing. I've always admired the big, powerfully built warrior. I think in this day and age they're honestly more of an underdog than the small, quick guy. The idea of the small, fast guy overcoming the big powerful guy has been done so much it's not even a subversion anymore, it's the expected outcome. So I like that we're going to have this big, burly power house on our team, given that Bioware companions tend to be portrayed as second only to the protagonist in terms of badassery. 

 

I also like the mercenary background, the hard drinking personality that's been alluded to. We haven't had a real boistrous bruiser companion in Dragon Age before. Oghren was a brutal deconstruction of the concept; a pathetic, alcoholic washout. Alistair was a meek knight-in-shining-armor. Sten was a stoic religious bruiser. Justice was a humorless fish out of water. Aveline was an uptight busy-body. Fenris was brooding and vengeance obsessed. 

 

Now, I like all of those characters, except Aveline. Hell, I love some of those characters. But I'm looking to Iron Bull as being a boisterous bruiser/blood knight played straight; fights hard, plays hard, doesn't take things too seriously but isn't a joke in and of himself. Strong, capable, competent, and good company.

 

Do we *know* Iron Bull will fit that bill? No, we don't. Am I setting myself up for major disappointment? Potentially. But this is what I'm hoping for; this is the potential I see in the character and that is what has me excited.

I must admit I am in the camp of Viv's detractors. I have a hard time picturing me romancing magic francophone Margaret thatcher. But also, I don't question why anyone wants to romance anyone. Down that way madness lies. Down the rabbit hole. Choose your own craziness inducing metaphor.

I think the idea behind wanting to romance Vivi is that she's so powerful and sure of what she wants. It's attractive. I'll certainly romance her at some point if she's available.

 

On the topic of Iron Bull, the size difference is a major attraction factor for me, but I also like the idea of a more boisterous badboy. As I've said before, Bioware tends to go more for more angsty badboys, and it would nice to get a different sort of flavor. Let's happily kick ass together and go out for drinks after: perfect date right there! That could be a very fun romance.

Basically whenever someone says "I don't know why you want to romance this character, we know nothing about them", I take it as them saying "this character doesn't appeal to me, personally, so I don't understand why anyone would want to romance them."

 

I'm more of a live and let love kinda guy, myself. Except Cole; still can't wrap my head around that one.

 

But yea, with Iron Bull I'm essentially looking for a character type that Bioware hasn't done straight yet. That's the ultimate subversion of expectations, right there.

he's a companion, tal-vashoth 'or was but not with the inquisitor', 9/10 most probably but you people need to get out more if you want to romance him, thats dersperate nerdy girls for you, an he's going to be my bodyguard an the only other companion who could compare is oghren, cant believe he's not a companion

this is why i never read the forums, fans arent just normal fans, everyones obsessed, and wanting to 'romance' other species i guess thats the same as me wanted to kill all the elves one extreme to the other, allistar was annoying apart from some banter, i killed him, anders was annoying, i killed him to, and i plan on killing vivienne next, first chance i get, so i hope they make it possible, but LooL to girls wanting to romance the grey warden companion or iron bull :'D get outside more:)

Well first and foremost, why should it matter to us what other players think? Someone elses opinion will not and should not effect my perception of a character.

 

That being said, we dont need specifics to enjoy a character so much. Being qunari is already enough to interest most and also being Tal Vashoth just opens another door of interest, we've been so used to the Sten type qunari so to see the opposite is very intriguing. Also as a result of us not knowing much about this character, a lot of people begin to theorize and speculate what the character will be like and a lot of the time people "fall in love" so to speak, with their own idea of what that character will be like based on the little info given.

 

 So really I dont think knowing specifics is necessary to enjoy a character and regardless it shouldnt matter to anyone except yourself.

I think what annoys me about that picture/blog thing the most is, and really I keep harping on it, the lack of awareness that people have differing tastes. The opening question is why people want to f*ck Iron Bull, not romance him. There's an obvious answer to that question; some people find him physically attractive.

 

Now it's very possible that his personality may prove to be a huge turn off to those people once we get to meet him, but that doesn't change the physical attraction part. I may detest Vivienne's personality, but I still think she's a beautiful woman.
