Most likely it's just a placeholder.

You could take both legs off.  Legs + torso for three pieces.

 

Alternatively a cut through the arm that continues through the torso. 

 

Manage to go all the way through both arms and you've got four pieces.

Well considering we've seen screens of him wielding qunari-style blades already, maybe he just likes the aesthetic.

 

But if not, The Brothers' End or The Blade of the Archon would have also been fine choices to highlight an exotic and brutal nature that a regular great sword wouldn't, without being the abomination that Hayder's Razor is.

Being against the qunari doesn't conclude that he's willing to turn down a good weapon. If I'm against the US military I'm not going to throw away a good quality assault rifle
