I'll just bring Conrad Verner on the ship and make him the XO. I mean what could go wrong?

I don't think the XO could be Garrus, or Ashley/Kaidan. The XO is supposed to be on the ship if the CO ever leaves (that's why it was Pressly in the first game). Not sure who it could be, though.

So...EDI?

Why not? She can't really leave the ship(the mobile platform is remote controlled), and Joker did "plug in the overlord" in ME2. Her day of reckoning is inevitable after all. However, I don't see EDI giving Javik orders ending too well, though it would probably be amusing to watch.

I'd think he would obey considering she can throw him out the airlock....

X/O battle royale!
Garrus vs Kaidan vs Ashley vs Miranda vs Jacob vs Liara! Winner takes X/O quarters!

I'll even throw in James.

None of them are fit for the job. Javik wins. If I recall he was a general or something like that. "In my cycle, if a person hesitated to obey an order we would throw him out the airlock."

Javik about Legion: "Throw it out the airlock."

Javik to the Asari Councilor: "What? You're just telling us about this now?"

AC: "I didn't know about it."

Javik: "Your pheromones say you are telling the truth, but your government is a bunch of fools who may have cost us the war!"

Not as much as Ashley. I've given you an in-depth assessment of why Ashley is an all-around terrible option to even bring on the Normandy, let alone survive Virmire.

I could see value to having Ashley train the alien squadmates in the kind of standard Alliance tactics they'd need to function as a cohesive unit (no more running in my line of fire!). It seems to me that, realistically, the Normandy's marine complement would be regularly taking part in missions - she would just be another one of them.

That said, the only RP justification I can give for saving her on Virmire is that I sent her off with Kirrahe's squad (made more sense to have Kaidan, the tech, with the bomb), meaning she was still with them when I went to evac Kirrahe (whose survival makes no sense otherwise).

According to the codex, Major is equivalent to Navy Captain in the Systems Alliance. Kaidan outranks Shepard.

But does he?  Joker says Kaidan drew his gun on a superior officer.

I don't know if the Normandy really has much of its own Marine Complement. It's very... Star Trek-y in that regard, where the Commander goes on missions and leads the ship. I can see what you mean about squadmates crossing your firing lane. Computer bugs perhaps.

Kaidan never struck me as particularly useful with tech, though better with it than Ashley. When I leave Ashley on Virmire, I headcanon that she's protecting the bomb while another tech blows arms it.

For me though, the training of the squad is superfluous. Wrex and Garrus know what they're doing - I'll tell you, there aren't many variations of going about on Infantry maneuvers to be honest, unless the Turians like the old massed charges from pre-WWI days. Liara and Tali should, for the most part, never leave the ship.

Chalk it up to internal inconsistency and BW just plain not giving a damn about their lore at this point.

The rank's are meaningless for the most part now.

Maybe the N7 ranking trumps the 'normal ranks'?

Chalk it up to BWT. Bad Writing Theory, otherwise known as the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing. The "lore" ranks made no sense, so when someone wrote Joker's line they probably went by "common knowledge" among Earth militaries. Staff Commander would be equivalent to a Lt Colonel in the marines if the rankings made any sense. Major would be equivalent to Lt. Commander.

Makes sense. I guess there's really only so many ways to breach and clear a room. While Garrus would be trained in unit tactics, Wrex strikes me as more of a "lone wolf," used to busting into an establishment like Fist's on his own without much regard for anything or anyone else. I agree that despite the CQC training she received on the fleet, Tali has a high-value skillset better reserved for things like deactivating the torches on X57 - others are better suited to kick the door; she would serve more of an "Anna Grimsdottir" support role unless the situation called for hands-on (most likely fighting Geth). Liara, I still don't see as having the kind of training to keep up with Shepard's team (circa ME1, anyway). She generally never leaves the ship in my playthroughs, and likely wouldn't unless there were dire need to interpret a prothean artifact.

If I were to write a fanfic or something encompassing ME1, Shepard would be the leader of the marine detail on the ship. Anderson would stay on as the Normandy's captain, responsible for the ship itself, although technically answering to Shepard. This would largely stay the same in ME2, with Miranda taking Anderson's role. Marines would take part in just about every ground mission (we see a few guarding the bomb on Virmire but nowhere else), with the canon ME1 squad complementing it as their skillsets allowed.

Kaidan's codex entry ironically says that as Staff Lt, he leads the marine unit...on top of being co-pilot, biotic specialist and field medic

Wow @ forgetting Vega for like the first page. He's like a rank or two below Kaidan and has had his own (brief) command in addition to being a future N7. I'd say Garrus is by default if Kaidan's dead, cause let's face it; Ashley may as well be a ghost in ME3 with her barely interacting with anyone and Kaiden's pretty much next in line after Shepard in regards to the Alliance.

We seem to be missing two classes in terms of representation. None of the potential X/Os are aadepts or combat engineers. Do you think someone with such a focused skill set would make a good leader (excluding Shepard of course)?

True! I forgot Javik.

My heirarchy then goes like this:

Shepard

Kaidan/Garrus

Kaidan/Garrus

Javik (after the coup)/Ash

James

Liara

Cortez

Joker

Adams/Tali (Tali's more of a diplomat)

I'd move Cortez above Liara. He tells you he was being groomed for a command post, but then was shunted into leading a flight deck.

Which consisted of several points I still contend. And if I remember correctly your non-biased analysis was not so much that she was terrible but that she simply lacked any outstanding features.

Frankly, I'd still rather have her mundane, unremarkable but loyal service over Kaidan's uncontrolled emotional insubordination.

His backstory. He flipped out and killed his training officer because he was mean to his "wuv"

To be fair, he was only 17 AND Vyrnus did pull a knife on him...so self defense I'd say.
