As I said before, people choose to be offended. Instead of simply agreeing to disagree or express a different point of view, she clearly looked at the post I made made the choice to be offend by it and also choose to get riled up about it. What I said had ZERO power over her in tell she gave it power over her.

That surprising made sense to me. ^_^  But please don't start a fight, especially with Dani. You would make an enemy of me.

Or maybe League of Bisexuals.

How is that not League of Extraordinary Bisexuals?

How exactly is that clear? What do you know of her or anyone's inner thought process?

When I see a stupid post I get angry about it, the choice comes later - whether I suppress it or not. Whatever I choose however it's too late, I've been offended.

Maybe instead of simply reacting, people can stop and give something some thought before immediately launching into being angry or offended about something? I'm not perfect. But, learning to think instead of simply reacting and making an honest effort to do so, has really help me out a lot. Also you are in control of your own thought process and yes you can make changes to it. But, you have to be willing to accept this and want to make a change before it can happen.

So, Fulgrim, are you talking about a "wear it like armour" sort of thing? That's what I'm getting from this.

Na, what I'm saying comes from life experiences. Back in high school and middle school I was the kind of person that got angry really quickly and due to this got angry at  the slightest thing. There where many times where I got bent out of shape about something that had nothing to do with me or things that where so trivial that they where not worth the energy or effort it took me to get angry or offended by them. Once I started to make an honest effort to regain some self control and also sought help to deal with the issues that led to me developing such a bad temper, I started to really see things differently and for the better.

You know a lot about military stuff. I'm learning a fair bit.  ^_^

I wasn't kidding. I wanted to serve, before I turned into an eternal idiot.

I was... fascinated... by weapons from an early age.

On the plane conversation, I just like sleek planes. It might come from the same place as my preference for rogues over warriors. Elegance over brute force.

F-16C_Fighting_Falcon.JPEG

Can you believe I have nothing to say about the F-16C?

Well, maybe this one story that happened to me several years back.

You see, NATO Days, on Ostrava (It's actually Mosnov, but Ostrava is the closest city) airport, are a yearly thing.

So a few years back, I was actually there, with my father.

And so were these Netherlandian (spelling?) air force guys. With their F-16C's, as I recall.

Turns out, the Czech Air Force and Netherlands Air Force roundels are rather similar.

85px-Netherlands_roundel.svg.png120px-Czech_roundel.svg.png

And I start to talk to this pilot in English. As I find out, he's actually surprised that I'm not speaking Czech!

Most people (if not all) would fail to distinguish the two, and think he's from the Czech Air Force!

So, we had a chat, with me translating for my dad. Quite a good one, too.

He thought we also have F-16's, which would be one more reason for people to mistake his country, but as far as I know, we had the offer from the US to buy off a couple Block 52 F-16's, and that's as far as that ever went. Instead, we loaned a couple JAS-39 Gripens from the Swedes. No offense to the Swedes, but the rumor is we could've had more F-16s cheaper - at the cost of having to actually upgrade them - and they'd be ours.

Now, we have these expensive as hell JAS-39's, that aren't even ours.

Eirene, I was nodding along with your post vigorously until the end. I am not the history buff you are, but nomadic cultures (particuay reindeer herding ones like the Sami) are a weird focus interest of mine, and it drives me crazy how terribly the Dalish are implemented.

I do find it interesting however that your conclusion is that the Dalish are terrible. The Dallish are fictional, they are often written terribly. But a huge part of appreciating fantasy, IMO, is accepting the limitations of the writer and trying to see what they meant or what could be there instead of what they fumbled. There are a lot of aspects of...basically every part of the game that stretch disbelief and have me going "oh god why aren't you all dead", and I wonder why it's the Dalish in specific that seems to bother people on this level.

People don't choose to be offended.

You're talking about how someone processes that offense, I think, which is different. Sure it's better not to act all reactionary and crap on people if it's not merited. But you can't learn how to be a person in the world who isn't sensitive to people crapping on you without becoming dead inside or not respecting yourself so.

Can we stop with this? It's starting to get quite aggressive.

Foul moods all around. A day for wars to start. Maybe the winds will change with the new morning. Or maybe we will all be banned. Who knows?

How condescending.

Words have an impact, that's the point. People can be offended by them, sometimes that's unfortunate, sometimes that's exactly what needed to happen. It's irresponsible to think that you don't need to think about what you say and that any offense is the audience's problem.  You say stop and think about your reaction, but shouldn't one also stop and think about their action?

Regardless of how much you think before you react if you were hurt, you were hurt.

It's also important to acknowledge there is a difference between "I am offended because Jimmy said I smell" and "I am offended that Jimmy said something that reinforces homophobia/racism/rape culture/ wev."

One could benefit from some thought like "why did Jimmy say that? Oh his parents just got divorced and he's acting out. Also he smells and he's trying to distract people from that " and you might feel better, or at least calmer.

The other it doesn't matter why Jimmy did it, it's still harmful.

Poodle, idk, I think we should be able to handle some conflict in here. just don't let it get out of hand.

What you do when you are hurt by words is completely up to you. You can choose to turn that hurt into anger and react before handy giving the situation any thought. You can choose to talk it out with said person to reach a middle ground. You can choose to walk away or you can choose to simply ignore what happened all together. More often than not it comes down to choice.

Conflict is like a fire. Once it gets loose, it will consume everything until there is nothing left to burn. I thrive in it, but I kinda doubt most here would. So maybe post kittens for a while.

Okay, I think you have a point.

Is the problem that you don't think Celene's sexuality is clear enough for that scene to not be misleading, or that you think a lesbian should never be shown as seducing a man even for an ulterior motive?

Sorry, I haven't seen that comment before.

The answer is: both. For those who are unaware of the informations from the outside of the game, there is much less reason now to assume she's gay.

And for those who have heard she's gay it could encourage existing damaging ideas about lesbians, since it matches with most of the other portrayals of lesbians from the other forms of the media, examples of what I provided in previous comments.

It was so completely unnecessary and so disappointing - not only she's a lesbian, she's an empress, but the writers couldn't come up with any other idea than making her lower herself into seducing a man of incomparably lesser status, doing something against her sexuality, because as an empress she couldn't do it any other way.

It's not only disrespectful to lesbians, but women in general.

Just so you all are clear about where I'm coming from. You are talking to someone who was constantly made fun of and beat up through out school because at several points growing up, my mother was bald due to chemo and radiation therapy. Someone who was recently spit on by people for daring to call them out on their religiously justified bigotry. Trust me I know how much words can hurt. But what you do when you are hurt by them is completely up to you.

I hate Celene/Briala on so many levels lmao.

First, it's gross on a character level, because Celene treats her like garbage.

Then there's the power difference they don't even mention in the game. Like I'll give Weekes props for that in the book. Relationship was gross but was supposed to read as such.

It's also gross on a sexuality level, because yay, more dysfunctional lesbian relationships, thanks Bioware.

AND Briala is a person of color( and an fictional race that is marginalized so even the "colorism doesn't exist in game argument, while always crap, is esp crap there) so it's gross to have a white human tromping all over her like that dysfunction is romantic and not straight up gross.

In conclusion, protect Briala 2k5.

Um, also. kittens! So cute. <3
