I don't think thats true at all. I believe Celene was honest when she confessed in bed that she wish she was someone else, not the empress. Therefore, she could be with Briala openly. It was Briala herself that scolded Celene for such foolish thinking. Lets not forget it was Briala who betrayed Celene, not the other way around.

 

I still maintain Celene's order for her servants being killed was her hand being forced by someone who could have her and her servents killed if Celene disagreed. Her hand was forced. Briala knew this and the impression I got from the end of the book was that Briala knew Celene all this and felt Celene was genuine in her love. But that wasn't enough for Briala. Her really problem with Celene is that Celene was to slowly reform her country while Briala was intimidate change. Briala chose her comment to the city elves over her love of Celene.

 

I'd imagine it would be nice to have a non tragic NPC lesbian romance in game but I'm a straight guy and admittedly I did not think of it that way. I just thought of it as a relationship period and simply viewed it as if I was in Celene's shoes. I'd be missed if a women I love did that to me after trusting her so much.

 

I have no idea how people can claim Briala supports the common people when shes prolonging a devastating civil war for her own goals. But apparently Briala only cares about her city elves, commoner humans are expendable. In true, her possession of the Eluvians makes her a danger to the empire, one the empire can't ignore. I fear that all Briala will do is make the city elves targets for retribution once the civil war is over and it will eventually end one day.

 

As for her relationship with Celene being one sided, this is ignoring the fact that Briala continually used Celene's affection for her to influence her actions toward the city elves. Briala wasn't some innocent abused and used in this relationship, she was manipulating Celene for her own ends as well.

 

Wow, I wrote a lot. Forgive me. I take it as a sign of how good a book Masked Empire was that it made me think so thoroughly about its characters.

tbh i wouldnt recommend the books (not cause they are bad quite good imo) because they will influence your choices and opinions from x hand account(used to be a raving promage before asunder now a moderate. Rather than through "natrual" discovery. But we have 3-7 days til release go wild

Mmmh I thought Lady Mantillon was delightfully surprised Celene at come up with such a "bold" plan though. I get the feeling Orlesian high royalty are groomed in being ruthless or uncaring from the cradle so that might factor a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if they hunt eachother instead of playing hide and seek :X

 

I do agree Briala's plans are very vague though and that their relationship wasn't one sided.

TME is not too bad for a "video game" book. I found the writing more fluid than Asunder (except some combat scenes, but I don't really like combat scenes when it is drawn out for too long. It's hard to be pro mage with characters like Adrian. I'm still leaning pro mage too, but pro reformed circle.
