This. So this. Sera is a real person, she's not fantastical in any way like all the others. And that's why I like her so much. S'why I also like her romance so much.

I see so many people complaining that she features no great leap of growth in character like you expect in a video game romance, but that's rarely how it works in real life. Sera's romance is the most similar to how relationships work in real life, you lie sometimes to make the person feel better, you go along with them most of the time no matter how crazy their being, because you love them, that's how it works, people rarely change to drastically, and that's what's great about Sera, she's real.

Here's the thing about that. In media, in video games, on TV, in books, in movies, you HAVE to condense growth. Sure, it may lack the element of 'realism' in terms of how people develop, but that's because in a character's journey through the story, there's an assumed expectation that we WILL see that character grow and change. Indeed, for many players of BioWare games, the characters, and, by extension, the journey those characters go on, are what draws us to these games. But to those of us complaining, it has a lot to do with how Sera DOESN'T feel like she does go on this journey. While the other characters are going through these experiences that do give them that growth, she doesn't. She's a static character alongside eight, eleven including the advisors, dynamic characters.

And frankly, lying to your partner about something as deeply personal as your system of beliefs? That's positively UNHEALTHY in my view. If you cannot be true to yourself when you're in a relationship, that's simply not love. Love means that you should be able to respect the beliefs of the person you are in love with. But Sera utterly refuses to extend that respect to an elven Inquisitor. Respect isn't a one way street.

While I havent played the game yet (the 1st I will though ) , I can tell ya this : A charachter growth isn't always a Must . There are some character you must accept for who they are .

And in Most rpg games , the way the 'growth' is done...often it come off during dialogues as you saying what THEY want to hear so you can get that +10 Approval .

And the 'growth' is often , You preaching to the charachter and shoving your view and they become mellow and stand by you no matter what .

While this recipe is something we are used to , it doesn't have to apply over and over and over again .

And there are character that are made in a certain way , and we are the one who for once will have to change for them . And not them having to change for us .

I don't know if this is the case with Sera (and I be romancing her with a Qunari Amazon  Yeah I picked the right choice lol) .....But we'll see I guess .

The point is , have you though...maybe you have to change your view for her ? maybe she was made in that manner for a reason ?

For Xil: Post What Pride had Wrought Sera Romance convo.

I KNOW it's 360p. I just didn't punch it through a bloody thing to be able to call it a HD. It's a raw file upload. Just dragged and dropped what my ShadowPlay vomited my way. Turns out if you upload a raw file that was recorded on a 1080p monitor, IN 1080p resolution, it'll just stick a tongue out at you and call it a 360p. Bloody compression, I say.

I think Sera represents the "little people" .

They are scared , the sky is torn open , there's demons , mages are out in the streets , the Chantry is falling apart...

What they want is a Hero "The Herald of Andraste" who will make everything alright just like before.

I'm not sure she's just comic relief , she's there to show you , most people won't care about the how and why and your doubt .

They don't care about old Elven stuff , there's a monster coming out of their tales (Chant of light)walking among them  and it needs to die badly. It needs to die and everything those people believe in , (magic bad , darkspawn bad , Andraste /Maker savior good) needs to be real so they all can sleep well at night .

Sera is not chaotic at all , she wants order , she doesn't want the world she knows to change .

Absolutely this, Sera is the little people that want things to return to "normal" because chaos and the madness in the world is just too much. She's just so scared of the unknown and I'd say Bioware did a great job on making her just that kind of character

Your remade your elf from Origin Boshtet ?

Nope. Arianne and Kallian are two completely different elves.

Kallian's face is a bit longer and thinner as I recall.

I love Sera. I actually kinda love all the companions of DAI... they are way more interesting than DA2, they have clear-cut opinions and personalities. I see no bland ones.

This game also tries to break prejudice - we see a huge muscled warrior that is SURPRISINGLY mature and rational - and he loves to call himself "The Iron Bull" because, well, he likes to HIT things...

Then Sera, an elf that disregards elfish culture, isnt extremely serious/dreamy like (Merryl, Im looking at you) and speak commoner words all the time, and curses and disses and tell sex jokes. Also she`s a KS'er. Nobody likes KS'ers =P

Blackwall seems like this serious, grumpy character at first (that reminds me of the NightWatch from Game of Thrones) but we find that he`s extremely easygoing, diplomatic and gets along with anyone. Sorta like Aragorn in LOTR.

Then we get a court black woman mage that speaks against her own kind rebellion and acts in a very condescending way, even though her opinions about things might be extremely well-thought and rational (or perhaps exactly because she`s so damn right in everything).

Varric is the same interesting character as always.

We have a damn PURE spirit with human form - something never seen before. And he likes to help people - sometimes killing them to help ease their suffering. With knives, of course, because he`s a rogue.

Solas is probably the most bland character - but comes with a huge twist since he`s so extremely independent and has a vast store of knowledge and an unique ability to contact spirits in their natural uncorrupted form - his stories about the Nature of the Fade and how it changes according to where you go and how "interesting" you are - which is just exceptional stuff.

Josephine is so darn diplomatic - she knows what and where to do for the best results.

Leliana has that martyr dylema - all she wants is to offer her life for the chantry or for some ideal. And she expects the same comitment from her spies... which ends up making her quite cruel at times.

Cullen... idk, he`s grown on me since DA2, I didnt like him much there.

Anyways, I find I like every character in this game. It`s a dream game!

This one of my main problems with Sera and really just makes me sad. Every time we go to a elven ruin she says something like "Why don't elves build things like this,oh wait". I just wish she would not insult my elven heritage every chance she gets and could at least try to be nice about it.I mostly like her its just this part of Sera drives me crazy since I only play elves.

After I've heard how she treats and what she does to elven Inquisitor, I agree that it doesn't look like she really loves her. But that makes me question her romance arc in any other playthrough because I assume she's not any different person when you play as Qunari, human or dwarf. There just isn't any major issue standing between them and showing her true feelings then.

I'm not quite sure what Sera's reasoning for joining the Inquisition is exactly outside of getting things back to normal so she can continue with her usual routine.

So, Zevran?

Quite apart from the unfortunate implications of Vivienne's race tied to her loathsome political opinions, she seems either delusional or lying about the "loyal mage" faction, as we never, ever see any organized mage faction opposed to the rebellion. Mages who disagree with the rebellion either stay with it and complain, or go off on their own, never organize into a different side and attack it.

Ahh... though I'd wondered about the dialogue if you actually do break up with her.

By the Pit, that's pathetic of her.

I...actually had to reload pre-mythal to redo this. I just...couldn't leave Sera like that. So I scaled back my roleplay and played it through like my Lavellan was an unshakable superwoman and not someone who has just had a major religious experience. She begins that convo like the brat she is but by the end...

So yeah. Goddamn the soft spot i have for people like her because i hate redoing entire sections so soon after completing them
>.<
But at least there is one less Sera crying when no-one is looking in the dragon age world.

I can upload that vid soon since I'm doing that quest right now it with my elf.

Though, the romance with my elf is bugged for some reason.   The last 'confession' scene won't fire.  That is the scene that actually 'locks in' the romance I think.

Very well said! It's how I've seen it aswell but not really been able to put into words
