I noticed that too. She likes her luxuries, that's for sure. And everything she doesn't like is stupid. Anyone who disagrees with her is stupid. Etc., etc. (silk is stupid because she can't work with it  )

It's a crying shame we don't get to point out how much she sounds like the people she hates. But then she would probably just call us stupid too... I'd love to use the 'well, excuse me princess' line with her.

I'd be one awfully happy person if we could get to use "Exuuuuuse me princess" with her

Jeez, a remark like that in a game that never claimed to be politically correct. What are the odds?

all i saying is it was offensive to some not taking a side.

Come on people, she is not underage. That would be too much, maybe really young 18 to 22 or something.

As for the transphobic remark, accept it, it is better than trying to excuse her. You can still like Sera the same way you can like other characters with problematic traits. I still like Sera but I absolute hate that remark and I find horrible that bioware knew they were making a really problematic character and decide to give you an option to kick her out all the time. Own it people, just own it.

Sera is not perfect but for the love of the Maker do not make things look better when they are not, her phrase at the winter palace IRL could hurt people badly too, misgendering is no joke for a lot in the community. Whatever were her reasons for doing that, it is still shitty but I blame her writer really and not her.

It is also JUST A GAME. Certain people get way too offended by things like this. I'm not b*tching and moaning over every instance German's have been showcased as Nazi or the like either.

Well considering she operates in the capitol of Orlais even as a thief she has probably more luxary that other people. So without knowing it she has become pampered.

Also look at her room in Skyhold. That looks also pretty nice.

I'm with that opinion. A thief in a rich, luxurious city full of nobles will always have more than a thief in some backwater village.

Dammit woman!

I don't feel so lucky... Why didn't she commit...? I wanted her to commit!

Edit: To murder, not marriage, though I'm up for that too.

We still love you, Dani, no matter what.

And if any of my comments offended, I have a tendency to do that accidentally. My heart is in the right place, but my use of vocabulary can go off track and instead look like I am against what I originally intended.

Poodle, I'll fix the mistake Nharia did, if you wish.

*points his P226, finger off the trigger*

Are you sure?

Oh I sure she likes the silken sheets on my Inquisitor's bed well enough. ;)

The sheets, or what's lying on them...?

Change of subject: There's a fair bit of irony in Sera's character. She's for the people. The people are poor. Right? Listen to some of her observations in the wilder areas though...

She complains about trees, about the cold (heard her say that in the Hissing Wastes), about the mud, etc. What does she sound like?

A pampered little aristocrat brat, that's what. I wonder if that's why Cassandra laughs at her sometimes when she complains?

Sera's a city slicker :P It's always entertaining to watch one of those turn up in my neck of the woods. Usually wearing sneakers too. Comedy gold if any member of the wildlife comes to say hi :D Now if only we could introduce our companions to our mounts, I'm sure Sera would love Enna's red hart xD ....And thus the idea for the next episode of strange-enough-normal was born.

Oh come on. She has a tiny, tiny room stuffed with stolen, borrowed, given, whatever trinkets that she seems to ignore - also fantastic lighting. She hates the nobility because she sees them as oppressors, she complains because she is a impulsive negative person.

Pampering would require her to not have to put up with hardship at all, so that she doesn't have any sense of scale, that clearly isn't the case. Standing up for the poor doesn't mean you have to live in a shoebox in the middle of the road.

I accept that she has plenty of problematic traits. She's very far from being perfect. I just don't see that particular remark as necessarily transphobic given her contempt for nobility and all it entails. I think it's meant to underline what she sees as the hypocrisy of the Orlesian nobles given their obsession with appearances and manners. Meh. I just sound like I'm repeating myself ad-nauseam now.

There's one line that makes me think she's used to more than a bit of luxury. She complains about the cold in a comment (I think it was in the Hissing Wastes) and said 'you know what's not cold? Cities!'

Uh... no. Cities can get absolutely, skin splittingly cold. I don't think she's ever had to sleep in a ditch. And as for her standing up for the little people...

Spoiler

She also has this seemingly pathological need to prove everyone else is not better than her. Or even that she is better. There's one particular banter with Varric (two actually I think) that put a flea in my ear. (French expression. It means 'it makes me suspicious'. ;))

Spoiler

Some people in the community find it transphobic and so do I. So yes it is transphobic, people have to accept that some characters are not perfect and move on. Excusing Sera behavior or the choice of words her writer picked, is not the way.

Uh... no. Cities can get absolutely, skin splittingly cold. I don't think she's ever had to sleep in a ditch.

But a city still provides shelter, that's the point. Yes, the really poor don't have that so on a cold day they still get cold, but I think it's a pretty big leap from not-dying-of-cold-in-a-ditch to being-just-like-the-people-she-hates. Even then it's not like she's above hyperbole.

If you want to get literal about it even the pampered rich noble brats would be getting cold, because central heating, insulation and reverse cycle air conditioners aren't a thing in Thedas, cold stone rooms with lots of ventilation are.

She complains, lots of people complain. The rich complain about the poor, the poor complain about being poor, the formerly poor complain about how they were much poorer than the current poor and the current poor don't know how good they've got it. It's universal, a big fuzzy common ground we all have.

It is because some people say it is? Since when did the world work that way? I accept that you and some other people interpret it one way and don't like it. That's your and their prerogative. It's my prerogative not to agree with your interpretation. Can you accept that?

As to accepting that she's not perfect, did you even read my post? She's childish, stubborn, dismissive of other cultures, unwilling to compromise and prone to extreme aggression. I accept all these things. I just don't read that one remark as necessarily transphobic.

Edit: And just to be clear: If I did read the remark as transphobic then I would certainly accept it as another stain on her already flawed character.

If I am in the trans community than I have the right to say it is. I was offended and it ruined my PT where I was romancing Sera.

You on the other side can choose not be offended but the fact it is, she misgendered a person and that is tranphobic. For whatever reasons Sera did it, it is still there. I really do not get why people cannot accept this.

It's an observation that is made in the middle of disparaging observations about nobles.  It's in the middle of a list starting with "crotch rot" and ending with claiming they're inbred.

It's really, really a stretch to say that "he's a she" wasn't intended to be negative.

I don't know the intention of the writer, but as a player, it seems pretty clear.  Again, I'm not writing off Sera for this one remark, but it exists.

*facepalm*

You do understand that stating such "observations" is hurtful to trans people? Since it insinuates that they are not "really" who they feel as, just impostors who try to "trick" people into believing they are someone they're not?

Have they responded to this on Twitter? Seems they respond to every query there. I'd be interested in hearing Sera's writer explain the remark and why he/she felt it necessary that Sera utter it.

I don't expect him to, considering he declined to comment on her remark on Iron Bull (which was, admittedly, less sensitive).

What I would be interested to know is how the line went through peer review. You'd think someone else on the writing team would have picked up on it.
