SpoilerFelassan an elf mage in the The Masked Empire claims that Arlathan was no better then modern Orlais, with a class-system that similar to how we would define slavery. Furthermore, when Arlathan eventually fell the lower classes rose up and slaughtered the elite mages of their society. You don't do that unless their a serious problem going on. Also, don't you think that the Gods having the ability to directly mind control their followers, willing or not, will inevitability lead to the abuse of that power. Maybe one elf doesn't want to follow the commands of their chosen God, but gets forced to do as they ask because they quite literally drank mind control juice. Sounds like slavery but even worse to me.

Class system? Allmost certainly. Though I'd rely more on general knowledge how socities work (not a single example of a functional society without a class system of some sort exists), than the word of a single mage. Still nothing close to slavery though And how do we define slavery? I define it as when person a has property rights of person b. Gods tend to be above such classification. Abuse? Depends. A faitfuls highest aspiration is to be the instrument of his chosen god is it not? If you enter in to a clergy without the full conviction you kinda deserve the results.
Look, I get it. I dislike the Qun for pretty much the same reasons you dislike the ancient arlathan. But as it stands, there's zero evidence of anyone being forced in to anything. And certainly not enough to call arlathan society a slave society. if anything, it was a theocracy as the gods were present in the day-to-day affairs. The chaos ensued after the gods disappeared because the entire society was built around them and with them gone, there was no chain of command with any real authority nor any backup plans and there never had been. It was an Outside Context Problem (google it) that the elves couldn't handle
