I dearly want to know more about the Friends of Red Jenny. Who IS Red Jenny? I want Sera to spill some beans.

She's never going to tell you if you keep asking ;)

I for one am elated to have a member of my demographic actually IN my party in DAI. IN my party. This already makes her far superior to Traynor imo. But can this topic move on to other topics. Possibly eye-liner related topics and how super adorable it makes her look

One of my crazy theories is that Red Jenny is not a person but a group of highly skilled people who go around making sure crime is lowered in places.

Tmp asked which gender and sexual orientation was the most generic. Therefore, my answer was about gender and sexual orientation.

Which I completely agree with. But I also think that one's sexual orientation is, in fact, one trait among many. And this is coming from a bi woman who has several homosexual friends. I think they'll be able to write Sera despite not being lesbian themselves.

Even then Sera's lips would be sealed,it'll take multiple trips to the bed roll before she gives it up lol.

This is starting to remind me of all the 'Who is the Shadow Broker' theories from Mass Effect :P

I think it's just a group and there's no 'Red Jenny' person but I was wrong about the Shadow Broker too.

I expect I’ll like Sera. I expect she’ll be a great character. But I would really, really like a great lesbian character, and response like yours make me think you see being a lesbian as something that isn’t meaningful.

And why being lesbian should be her defining trait? You make it sound like gay characters suddenly have 2 heads or something, not just some difference in preferences. I, myself, define a person by being witty, devote, hypocrite, cowardly etc., not who he/she sleeps with. Honestly, that's strange to read from you, I thought only "straight white dudes" made such an emphasis on sexual orientation.

Revised statement:

Do not underestimate the power of a PC character's Bedroll. Those lips will be loose the moment the pudding is produced.

Nah, just get her drunk enough and she'll talk once she trusts you.  No need to bed her, unless you want to.  :)

I am right-handed and I am a lesbian. These are both traits. One is more meaningful than the other.

So... not a lesbian, and you have 'homosexual friends,' because gay women and gay men are interchangeable in a conversation about whether being a gay woman is meaningful.

I think they'll be able to write Sera despite not being lesbian themselves.

The question was never whether Luke could write Sera. He already has, which is evidence enough that he can do so.

The Inquisitor's party would have no cheap pudding, not when you have Leliana and Vivienne to be your fabulous guides of fashion.

How do you think the experience/meaning of being a lesbian in Thedas would differ from our world (if it should)?  Or, even for an elf in Thedas?

This is a spiced caramel apple martini.  A few of these and the right words, maybe the player will finally find out more.

I thought in the leaked survey they mentioned that Sera was a part of a thieves guild.  It just seems so...mundane for the Friends of Red Jenny, but I could be making the group grander in my mind than they actually are.

I have the World of Thedas and it said most people don't have a problem with gay relationships aside from the problem of elves needing to boost their numbers and everything.

Yes, the experiences, attitudes, and viewpoints of the privileged group are what's used to define what a generic human is. That's what it means to be privileged.

I think we are using different meanings of the term, something I hoped to avoid with the clarification part in the earlier post. When you said "lesbians aren't generic meat-beings" I read that as "lesbians are specific (group of) meat-beings" rather than "lesbians aren't the default". Hence my question if the same can't be said about any other group.

As the result I feel your reply doesn't really address my question (though that's likely to the language barrier on my part, the more I think about it, the more I'm sure I got confused how "generic" is used) Does being (or not) the default affect the range of attitudes and personalities displayed by individuals of the given combination, relatively to the other combinations?

I have doubts about a MAN writing a LESBIAN. I would have almost no doubts about a lesbian writing a straight man because stories about straight men – their lives, their experiences, their sexuality, their relationship with other men nd women – are ubiquitous. Inescapable, even. Their perspective is the default.

Alternatively, lesbians stories – our lives, our experiences, our sexuality, our relationship with other women and men – are not readily accessible.

No, it doesn’t. It’s the exact opposite of what would be helpful to say. :P

I have plenty of gay friends, and their sexuality almost NEVER comes up. Same reason my sexuality never comes up either.

I’ve had some gay friends that I didn’t even realise were gay, and do you know why? Because it isn’t the most prominent aspect of their personality. People are different, and some people have no reason to ever mention their sexuality to someone, some people aren’t even prepared to admit it. So, I think it’s a GREAT thing that Luke didn’t sit down and attempt to write a lesbian character, because creating a character just to fill a certain sexuality is a weak way to start a character. He wrote a character that is gay, the ‘character’ part being the most important aspect. I don’t see why it should be obvious to us that Sera is gay, unless it’s part of her character to mention it casually.

There’s a demon invasion going on, I doubt she thinks it’s the time to mention it. Of course, if she’s romancing your inquisitor, then of course it will come up. But, if two gay people are courting each other, I don’t see why their sexuality needs to be brought up that much either. If they’re at the “I’m interested in you” stage, it shouldn’t need to be mentioned. Of course, it’s different for everyone, but that doesn’t make something that differs from your experience to be wrong. I’m not gay, so I’m not trying to tell you that you’re wrong, but if Luke sat down and wrote a female character, without focusing on her sexuality as a starting point, then that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. She can still be a strong lesbian character and share many personality traits with a heterosexual person. If you completed the game as a male inquisitor and never actually realised that Sera was gay, that wouldn’t mean that Luke had failed to portray a gay character, not at all.

Edit: If he were to write a book, and it was all in first person, from Sera's point of view, then your worries would absolutely be justified. But we're playing from the Inquisitor's POV. So, how obvious it is that Sera is a lesbian is really down to how much Sera chooses to express it.

LOL.

When the game came out, Mystranna said "Traynor's okay, other than the fact that she's obsessed with her toothbrush", and I thought she was kidding.  I couldn't fathom it.  But I mean, somebody, somewhere at Bioware, should have noticed.  It's the only lesbian.  And she LOVES her vibrating toothbrush.  LOVES it.  I don't care if it became a Doctor Who reference to the sonic screwdriver in Citadel, it's a freaking vibrating phallic object that a lesbian character can't live without.

I'd like to think it was unintentional, but if it's a deliberate joke, I question why it was necessary.

And if anybody out there doesn't get what I'm talking about, Google Image Search "lesbian toothbrush" with safe search off, and get back to me (but don't do it with your parents or employer in the room).

Well, that makes me glad I'm not the only one who questioned the suspiciously prominent inclusion of Sam's toothbrush >_>

This is starting to remind me of all the 'Who is the Shadow Broker' theories from Mass Effect :P

Now I'm worried Red Jenny may turn out to be a big fat wyvern who escaped from his Antivan enclosure and took over.

That looks delicious,I bet Sera could chug atleast 20 dozen of those and be in the mood for talking.

I keep picturing this happening to Sera.  Not sure why:

Sera: C'mon Bull, drink with me!

IB: Sure, I could go for a pint.

Sera: A pint sounds boring.  You always say that.  I know!  Let's have a drinking contest.

IB: I wouldn't advise that.  I've had a lot of practice and you're pretty small.

Varric: <laughing> Oh, I would advise that.  This would be too funny to pass up.

Sera: Nonsense, you know I can hold my liquor.

Varric: I know that kiddo, but a qunari isn't your average human solider.

Sera: You know what?  You party poopers wait here, I'll go get the drinks.

Cass: Do I truly want to see this?

Varric: I think you do, Seeker.

Sera: <comes back with the shots.  Several small shots of various colors and scents are on the tray>

Sera: Let's do this!  GAME ON!

IB: <chuckle> Very well, you go first...

One hour later:

Sera: <smashed drunk, singing slightly off-key> Whhhhhhhaat do you do with a drunken sailor EARLY IN THE MORNING?

IB: I warned her not to take that last shot.

Varric: Didn't you order it?

IB: Yes.  Dwarven spirits, mixed with a little berry juice.

Varric: By the Maker Bull...you gave the kid dwarven spirits?  You gave her dwarven alcohol?!?

IB: She'll be fine after she passes out.  She seemed to like it though.

Varric: Fine.  But if she gets sick, you're cleaning it up.

Cass: ...

Cass: I'm going to bed.

Sera: Thrrrrrrrooww 'em in the hold with the Captain's Daughter EARLY IN THE MORNING!

And why being lesbian should be her defining trait?

I know it’s a difficult thing on the internet, but please try to respond to what I actually said.

Being a lesbian is meaningful. It matters. This is not a radical thought, and voicing it is not demanding that Sera become Ser Sappho Dykesalot.

I, myself, define a person by being witty, devote, hypocrite, cowardly etc., not who he/she sleeps with.

I bet you consider yourself ‘color blind’ as well.

... I thought only "straight white dudes" made such an emphasis on sexual orientation.

And you thought wrong.

Though I find it odd that you simultaneously don't think of people in terms of sexual orientation, but think only straight white dudes care about sexual orientation. It seems a bit of a contradiction.
