I really like Sera as a character, but man does she have some big flaws. I can see why she's so divisive, and I can see how some lesbians would be upset at having their first representation in a DA game be her. On the other hand I can also see why BioWare would take a firm "sexuality is independent of character" stance. It's a knotty issue, indeed.

I'm sure others can enjoy her for what she is, she grates on me more often then not, disappointing. It's great to see Bioware making strides with more inclusion like this, happy to see them writing more diversity. Pity that Sera for me has more unattractive qualities as a person than good and she happens to be gay which ugh, disappointing allround.

It sucks that there is such a variety/choice in the game, but you can't find the one that's right for you.

looks like I missed a lot of interesting discussion.

It's interesting to me because I love Sera as a character, but have a much diminished interest in romancing her, so I can sympathize both with those defending her (she is SO lovable and sympathetic to me) and with those who are disappointed about the way the lesbian LI ended up.

I think that's part of the problem. Too much demand is put on her character fulfilling expectations instead of just letting what's there grow on people. The focus seems to be on what she lacks and not on what's positive about her.

For the future I will keep my expectations low as this turned out to be a letdown of sorts for me.

Eh? I cripple myself with my gamestyle I will admit. If I could play males easily in this game I'd be set, but I struggle. #First world problems

I guess you could argue that high expectations generally factor strongly into this, but in terms of Crim's own argument, I think she has a perfectly valid concern. I can see how something like that could have caught a lot of Sera fans off-guard and affected their initial opinion on her in the process. Of all the bad things that could have happened to her, I don't remember if anyone expected to be turned off by something like Sera's own beliefs and values.

Forgive me if you mentioned it earlier but did you have other issues with her aside from the Dalish thing or was that the chief problem?

Just curious how she does in general terms from your perspective.

I must see this completely differently, but not liking her as a character doesn't need to detract from the fact that it is a good thing that she was the first openly lesbian character, does it?

I don't think it was a good thing.

I refuse to do so. I'll continue yelling at Bioware.

Huh? Sorry, I'm still at Uni. *looks at watch and wanders when he'll be done* What was a letdown? The game? Why? Why was it a letdown? Please tell me... I'm so alone right now.

I can see an argument to be made that Sera is a let-down as she presently is. She's opinionated and a fair bit intolerant so hopefully they'll revisit her in a later game or expansion to show her changing from experience. I wish BioWare had considered allowing us to challenge her more as Inquisitor so you could spar with her beliefs a bit and maybe sway her. It's a pity they did not see fit to do at least that.

I will say, even as a non elf and not romancing her, that conversation felt strangely integrated. It did include the line of Sera telling Hella she was too elfy, so it was amazing for rp reasons, but it was like...Sera just screeching at Hella over and over that she was stupid and disappointing, and then the next conversation I had with her was post final battle, and she was like HEY FRIEND!!! I wish there had been some transition there, haha.

I actually mentioned that as a worry numerous times.

I confess to feeling some amount of satisfaction about calling the hell out of that one.

For some who were looking forward to the first openly lesbian character in a DA game Sera left alot to be desired. Disappointing sums up my thoughts on her, did I want this to happen hell no, I've been looking forward to her for quiet sometime. Can't fault others for feeling let down.

I get that but the problem I've seen from it is that she doesn't fit what other view as "a good lesbian" and people get too demanding on things like this

But the thing is she isn't meant to be that, she's meant to be Sera

Yeah and at the same time having to lower ones expectations beforehand is in itself a bit a kick in the pants, so I can understand why people don't always do it. I didn't mean to imply that her concerns weren't valid, people have every right to get excited at the potential of something being great. It's just that on some level you have to prepare yourself for some potential shortcomings. Hope for the best, plan for the worst as it were. Sera does make her perspective on the Dalish abundantly clear, it might just catch people off guard given that some characters can change their perceptive over time and Sera in contrast isn't willing to change.

I pretty much kicked her out of the inquisition after that. I was so sick of dealing with her crap by that point.

Like, you know, Alistair had a breaking point and I hit in my first PT while romancing him, and it showed his ugly side...and it was incredibly effective and heartbreaking, but I think it worked because he made that decision in a heightened situation and then stormed off. It's not like he stood around in camp awkwardly with me for 10 more hours hours, refusing to have a dialogue with me because all his conversations had been used up. THAT would have made me mad, because not letting my Warden have a chance to explain her decisions after emotions have cooled off?

If you guys could have more conversations with Sera afterwards, whether you ended the romance or not, do you think that would have helped? Just the follow up?

Is this turning into a "We hate Sera thread! Change her now or we boycott your next game!" thread?

I have the impression Sera had implementation problems from kicking her out in the main dialogue to following up with the break up.

For example my character that was a dalish did break up with her after the temple business and even asked her if they could be friendly after, which she disapproves but at the end when you talk to her, it is like nothing had happened.

I think it would make the breakup a more interesting story.

Right now, it just seems to end and it's as if there wasn't ever anything between the two...which is weird.

I might be wrong since I didn't finish the game with the breakup. I did talk to her after and not much happened.

So... A card on Google Now on my phone just directed me to a thread on Reddit where someone suggests that maybe Sera spent some time in that haunted orphanage in the Denerim alienage. That would explain a lot.*

*Also Google knows that I am obsessed with Dragon Age in general and for the last couple of months Sera in particular... *ahem*
