I keep picturing this happening to Sera.  Not sure why:

 

Sera: C'mon Bull, drink with me!

 

IB: Sure, I could go for a pint.

 

Sera: A pint sounds boring.  You always say that.  I know!  Let's have a drinking contest.

 

IB: I wouldn't advise that.  I've had a lot of practice and you're pretty small.

 

Varric: <laughing> Oh, I would advise that.  This would be too funny to pass up.

 

Sera: Nonsense, you know I can hold my liquor.

 

Varric: I know that kiddo, but a qunari isn't your average human solider.

 

Sera: You know what?  You party poopers wait here, I'll go get the drinks.

 

Cass: Do I truly want to see this?

 

Varric: I think you do, Seeker.

 

Sera: <comes back with the shots.  Several small shots of various colors and scents are on the tray>

Sera: <smashed drunk, singing slightly off-key> Whhhhhhhaat do you do with a drunken sailor EARLY IN THE MORNING?  

 

IB: I warned her not to take that last shot.

 

Varric: Didn't you order it?

 

IB: Yes.  Dwarven spirits, mixed with a little berry juice.

 

Varric: By the Maker Bull...you gave the kid dwarven spirits?  You gave her dwarven alcohol?!?

 

IB: She'll be fine after she passes out.  She seemed to like it though.

 

Varric: Fine.  But if she gets sick, you're cleaning it up.

 

Cass: ...

 

Cass: I'm going to bed.

Meaningful can mean many different things.  That is somewhat difficult to answer, even if not speaking of the DA Universe.   Gay, straight, bi, the terminology isn't even in Thedeas that we've seen so far, I believe.  The concepts may be there, but that creates another layer of abstraction when trying to answer the question, imo.  We've just had people speaking in terms of who they slept with or married, without seeing much in the way of judgement or oppression.

Very well put, just to add to that though, I think there's a bit of a societal stigma, but it seems to be mostly "dudebros can't handle gay guys" since the only time you see a character being uncertain about their sexuality is when they're asking the male PC if they're bothered by it. Sounds like Thedas still has it's share of immature manchildren making crude jokes and getting frightened by the very idea of another man taking interesting in them.

Not in terms of you, the player of the real world, appreciating it. Rather, how it impacts the average life and social standing and pressures of development for someone growing up in Thedas.

They actually started as concepts for a game titled "Dragon Age: Inquisition" that originally started before DA2 (Dragon Age: Exodus) started up.

 

It's part of the rather fluid nature of how games are created, I have learned.

 

OH, I just assumed the middle one was DA2 because Matt Rhodes art blog said it something about Hawke, who was originally in the picture. I knew the one on the right was DA:I after Lukas commented, though. Ty

I added the "Draw This Again!" pic to the OP.  I figured that would be a good place for folks to see her changes.  It's a lovely piece of art.

While I disagree with the implication (that you cannot successfully write a character unless you are yourself their mirror), if it helps, I didn't attempt to write her to be an example of what a lesbian character should or should not be. I wrote her to be Sera, and she happens to be a lesbian. I tried to take the same approach with Aveline. I didn't write her to be a strong woman, I wrote her to be a strong character. That she was a woman was part of her character, but not what wholly defined her.

Like Aveline, Sera has her flaws. I expect some will like her, and some will hate her, and that's expected. Hopefully because of her opinions/actions and not due to an expectation of what she should or should not represent. But I can't control that, so we'll see how it goes. I've had my hits and misses before. Fun every time.

As a consumer, as a woman, as a lesbian, I want interesting, well-developed, characters to read about and interact with. I don't care who does the writing, I want to see characters treated as people; something Bioware has done very well throughout it's games. I don't think there is any great mystery, or secret code to unlock, to write a gay character well. Why? Because we, like everyone else, are human! I experience joy, pain, loss, heartbreak, like anyone else. Those are the experiences I relate to when I read books, watch movies, etc.

Is it possible to write a gay character poorly? Sure. Just as it's possible to write any type of character poorly. However, no one is going to be able to evaluate the quality of said character until the game is out and we experience her as more than a picture and a quick summary. I think to judge a character simply by who wrote her, without even having seen the whole picture, is exactly what we don't want. It could put off writers from trying to be more diverse with their characters, which I don't want, as well as being ignorant and exclusionary--something most of the gay community would be opposed to I think.

I, for one, am looking forward to meeting Sera.
