Yup, that's a Tiffy if I ever saw one. I saw this particular photo before. The mismatched bits are from different aircraft, which is also the reason it's serial is crossed out on the rear fuselage. It's effectively several planes put together, AFAIK.

 

And that Spit replica is probably supposed to be a Mk.IX... Can't tell if it's and F, LF or HF, and guessing c or e is equally hard.

Wait, what's that? Hawker Sea Fury? And they removed that Spit's guns. Didn't even leave in something to make them look there... That's at least a Vb, if not higher, I'd say. My money's actually on Mk.VIII or IX.

 

Edit: Also, the Sea Fury is flying Aussie colors. The Spit's flying RAF colors, sans Invasion Stripes, which I'd really say should be there. I'll try running the serial number of the Spit through Google.

 

Ugh. The Spit's a replica, built from the ground-up as I understand it. I'll try see what Mark they went after with the building.

War Thunder doesn't do those beasts justice, IMHO. Gotta learn to control one such magnificent piece of hardware in Il-2 1946. Beautiful thing.

 

They aren't a well known plane either.

 

Are we picking planes? I'll be predictable and say Yak-1.

 

Oh, so that's where the photo's coming from? I always assumed it would have more to do with the 588th Night Bomber Regiment.

Well, they were being phased out in the fighter role by the Tempest, even during the war. It was built as the Anti-Focke Wulf, but didn't do as great in air-to-air role, supposedly. Built as a successor to the Hurricane...

Yeah. And then it vanished. Most probably ended up as spare parts for their younger brother, the Tempest.

Hah. Plane geekery. Not even remotely there. It's just fun. I can barely recognize most of the Spit versions. For example, the only way I recognize a Mk.I and a Mk.II is by someone telling me. Or a Mk.Va - that one by camouflage, which changed and got more green instead of the early-ish brown.

 

But speaking of camouflage, did you know the British camo of WWI was a bit of a mess? I can't really remember the designation, but supposedly every batch was a little different.

War Thunder was/is a pretty bad game overall. I did have fun over the summer with the Tanks version but when a T-34 can one-shot a Panzer IV continuously it calls into question the Russian game makers commitment to historical authenticity. I did enjoy flying the Hurricane in that game but it was too arcadey. Don't know if I have the commitment for a real in-dept planes game though. More of a warfare to 1900 kind of guy.

Yet when I hit that T-34 dead on at close range in the turret with the same shell-type...nothing. I suspected large grants from Putin went into that game and bagged it.

 

There was one other early Soviet model. Not even the T-34 but an earlier mid-30's Tank that would take shell after shell from the Panzer IV and it was just ridiculous. Absurd and I knew then the game was rigged for Russian Tanks.

 

Or if you take on a low-lvl Russian bi-plane with Hawker Hurricane that you've loaded up to the gills and that takes the pounding and turns on a dime out of your fire that's bollocks indeed.

 

But enough about that time-waste.
