Phew. Caught up.

Wow. Things got very heated and are still quite toasty here, really, aren't they?  I believe I will refrain from commenting on those discussions.

In other news, I am (and have been for a while) very seriously considering playing as a female Inquisitor. For straight guy who's always played straight guys (Warden, Champion and Shepard too) it should be an interesting change (would you believe I've only ever played Origins and DA2 - and ME/2/3 - through once each?) and possibly challenge, and it raises an interesting question: who to romance?

Now, it seems like taking the "easy option" to go for a f/f romance - since it doesn't seem much much of a stretch to me as I like ladies - so I'm totally open on LI options just now.  Since we don't know enough about all the characters, their voices and their orientations, how could I plan such a thing at this point?  I'd like to think I'm open to whoever appeals the most - bearing in mind this is only a computer game and I'm not making any real life choices here.  I feel like I'm making more of this than it is... especially when you consider all those people with their multiple every-which-way playthroughs!  She'd probably be a good match for how I usually play my characters in these things (as my snarky do-gooder Hawke would attest) but again that seems like the easy option! Hah!  I guess we'll see when the time comes.

Anyway, love Sera, looks like she'll be a great character!  I can't wait to hear more of her voice and find out who her VA is - the tiny amount we could hear over the commentary in the vids sounds like fun.  By the sound of the comments from the devs, she could be one of those pure magic castings.

Oh, and I like the idea that 'Red Jenny' is no longer - or maybe never was - a real person.  Rather "she" was a name someone came up with to take the blame/responsibility for something ("Yeah, I heard Red Jenny totally did that guy over!") and it gained a life of its own.  She can't be captured, maybe she hides in plain sight or always escapes just before the authorities arrive; you'll never find her, but her friends are everywhere...

And now...

HAVE A SERA

So [... ] have a Sera

Magpie related goodness:

Spoiler

Varric: Hmm

Dorian: What are you "hmm"ing about dwarf?

Varric: I'm trying to think of a nickname for you.

Dorian: Oh? And what do you have so far?

Varric: I'm thinking "Dramatic Hands Mustache Guy."

Dorian: Yes wel- I'm sorry what?

Varric: Yeah, 'cause y'know, you always do that thing with your hands and you...have a...mustache...yeah I'll keep thinking.

Dorian: Not your best work.

Moar Sera art

"So I walked into my room at the tavern and it was filled with burning candles. There she was -- naked as a newborn, propped up against the pillows, and cradling a bottle of wine.

I said, 'Sera! I'm flattered but... but I'm not interested!'

Her mouth dropped open, she turned red as a beet, and she stammers, "Oh dear Maker, I thought this was Cassandra's room!" Then she hopped off the bed and scurried right on out into the hallway. Took the bottle of wine too."

......I just wanted to "ilke" these here as I ran out of 'actual' ones.

I went with the "Dread Roberts" theory for the FotRJ.  "Red Jenny" being more a title than a person, something that's earned or inherited in some way.  <shrug>

Besides, even if the theory of Sera=Red Jenny is true, that doesn't mean we'll be privy to all of the secrets of the group.  Even with a dozen spiced caramel apple martinis. :P

She doesn't seem old enough to be Red Jenny, since FORJ was around and established in Origins and it is now at least 13? years after that. She seems much, much younger. Youngest looking of all the female companions at least.

That said, I think FORJ is just what the friendly neighborhood thieves guild call themselves.

Mostly the fact that she is part of those circles as well as the FoRJ and and that the Elven uprising happens in the area where you're presumabely meeting her from the info we have so far.

It's possible they could be involved there somehow.

I don't think it's the focus of the organization.  Sera isn't a revolutionary or elven rights activist herself.

Nah, I didn't think that she would be. I just hope that the story lines at least intersect somehow because that's the one thing I am hoping for the most wrt to stuff we can actually accomplish in DA:I and it'd be nice to work at it with actual elves. Including Solas, but we don't really know anything about him, soooo...

I'll be playing a Dalish first so I hope we can.

There still could be something there with Sera...I wouldn't rule it out completely.

I, personally, know zip about Solas...except he's a mage and doesn't look Dalish.

Who says she is the first 'Red Jenny'? Think like how Liara became a new Shadow Broker. Almost nobody knows it isn't the same person.

Just like Wesley from the Princess Bride wasn't the first "Dread Pirate Roberts" either.   This could be a recent thing for her, although...

How big is this "neighborhood" anyhow?  They've got at least one branch in Denerium, and it looks like they have a branch somewhere in the Free Marches.  Those areas at least a couple of weeks at sea apart, if not longer.  Sera could be a head of one of the branches though, one of the many "Red Jennies" out there.  Heck, "Red Jenny" could be a fancy code-word for their leader of the local chapter of their guild.  Or she's a second-in-command.

I was referring to the Friends of Red Jenny on that line. ;)

If Red Jenny is a title, then she is most definitely the current Red Jenny (outfit is red after all... hehe) considering that the Inquisitor is supposed to be "the leader of leaders".

That's what I'm starting to believe as well.  Plus, I could see her responding to the name "Jenny."  It somehow would suit her as a code name.  It sounds so innocent, such a sweet name, and Sera seems like she's....not innocent, but I'll bet she has a sweet heart.  :P

I still don't know if I'm going to romance her, but I have a feeling a three archer party is probably going to be my first party grouping.  Varric, Sera, and My dwarf Quizzy, with the warrior or mage slot undecided.  I'm already getting a "big sister" vibe about her, but I'll have to wait to "meet" her first.

Yes unless I can flirt with all the romance, I really do not thing the option should be there at all.

And, this is how you put your forearm back in place.

No, I was preventing a derail by talking too much about a convention.  Do you have anything else to add about the character Sera, or was your response to me all you wanted to say?

I came to look at the thread, not necessarily to post. But I do suppose that changed.

Actually the Inquisitor in that artwork is male.

ou2x3c.jpg

The Inquisitor in that concept art is the rogue on the left with the pipe and his boots up on the table. If that art is depicting an actual scene or banter, I don't think it will be romance-specific.

It might also be at Cassandra's expense. Check out her reaction.

I saw this commentary on this scene @ Tumblr thought I wouldshare

Sera: Do you have a little elf in you Cassandra?
Cassandra: No. Why?
Sera: Would you like one?
Cassandra:

God, I hate Sera's face in that concept art.

Cassandra looks pretty funny, though.

Why do you post in this thread if you hate Sera so much? you seem to always bash her character everytime you mention her, seems weird to me.

That was directed toward the concept art, not Sera.

I kinda like Sera's character, honestly. Only thing I complain about is her appearance, if it comes up.

First Fenris, now Sera. Just what is it with elves and their apparent proficiency in fisting?

I wonder if we'll meet "Red Jenny" one day

i think red jenny is dead, and that the friends of red jenny are people who were so maddened/shocked by her death that they started a kind of vigilante group to try and stop future attacks like that.  the red jenny was a nickname for the deceased kind of like the black dahlia

Speaking of "mugging", I'm wondering if we can set the Inquisition's policy on... certain illicit activities. Endorse them, even. "Duncan" it up.

i hope they bring back pick pocketing

Prior to Dragon Age II, we learned that all our companions had done something important in Kirkwall, which was why Cassandra knew about their activities.

This made sense for Anders, Varric, Aveline, and Isabela, but what did Fenris ever do?

I suspect 'you are a leader of leaders!' is marketing speak for 'many of your companions are people of importance in Thedas.'

he killed some rich people

I'm obviously not a lesbian, so I can't fully relate. But I regularly exchange flirtatious, joking banter with people I have absolutely no intention or desire to sleep with, and my friends do the same in return. I just think it's fun.

Her taking the role of Isabela in teasing the Inquisitor in whatever relationship he or she might be in would be great, too.

yup

Do you do it with a gender you're not attracted to?

i used to with a few gay/bi male friends.

Ha.  My favorite theory I've seen for the subject of Sera's tale in that concept is that a fellow thief had to swallow some valuable item they'd stolen and that she then had to help...fish it out.  ;)

That was probably a post in this thread somewhere but I can't be bothered to hunt it down, alas.

I've been pondering yesterday's discussion and a number of people inquired as to what I would like to see in a lesbian that would make me consider them a good lesbian character. It's a fair question: people are shaped strongly by their culture and life experiences, and lesbians are individuals.

Many people, I believe, would also like to avoid discussing the not-fun aspects of being a gay woman*.

I came up with an attribute!

Lesbians like women.

Not just f***ing them (though that's nice) but liking them. The vast majority of lesbians share that attribute and the exceptions tend to be dealing with serious emotional baggage. I think this is a noteworthy attribute because many straight men and women, and gay men, don't like women. Our larger culture reflects this trend.

I suspect this is why I've often seen Leliana as leaning heavily toward the gay side of bisexuality. Her interactions with women suggests she likes and enjoy them. The biggest exception would be her dialogue with Morrigan when she fights over the (male) Warden's romantic interest.

It also occurred to me that the Bechtel Test is exactly the sort of thing a queer woman would come up with. A straight feminist would have focused on a singular woman and asked ‘is she a main character?’ ‘does she have a strong character arc?’ or ‘does she kick ass?’ The idea that what’s good is not a prominent WOMAN but conversation between WOMEN (but not about a dude) is a very lesbian viewpoint.

*I'm not one of them.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Maria! :)

Isn't there some other thread specifically dedicated to sexual orientation discussion? Yeah, pretty sure there is. Ergo, I request that you please take your concerns on the matter over to a separate thread, because you seem to derail the topic off Sera into "LESBIANISM AND HOW LESBIANISM IS IMPORTANT TO ME PERSONALLY AND THIS IS HOW I VIEW LESBIANISM AND SERA IS LESBIAN" as if that's the only thing to her character.

Interjecting right now.  In this thread I know that I, specifically, asked her for an elaboration (and it sounds like some others did too).  It seems appropriate for her to write her thoughts on the subject in the thread that spawned the inquiry made towards her.

I can totally appreciate that (@Maria's post about lesbians).

I'll just say as a straight guy, my interest in Sera is mostly limited to her being a rogue. Or rather, her individual expression of that. I'm going to miss having a romanceable rogue (and It isn't going to be Cole or Varric.. Pretty sure about that).

If lesbians get more from the romance, because of gender specifically, more power to them.
