He's such a sad figure. I recruited him as an agent, and I was bummed I couldn't talk to him after that.

So many things that could have been expanded on. I mean the game is huge and I'm not complaining about the open world like others do--I think it was a very successful experiment and a wonderful addition to the series, but I hope they learn from that first try and balance narrative/exploration better next time.

I like the open world. I like standing on  a ruined bridge looking over a massive valley, I like walking through a forest and hearing a dragon thumping through the air overhead - and I love knowing that the bridge can be rebuilt and crossed and that the dragon roosts somewhere on the map.

 

I think the problem is the content in the open world, it's inane gathering quests. How many different ways can you make a bar in the corner of the screen go up? Meanwhile the handful of really solid story quests are shunted into separate areas.

 

If the main story was in the open world, and the reason for being in the open world I think you'd address a lot of issues.

All this talk of how to make Iron Bull work on nightmare has inspired me to play a 2h Qunari myself. I'll let you know how it goes. The general plan is:

 

1) war cry upgraded for the 200% armor buff (this will GREATLY help survivability)

2) Upgraded Mighty Blow

3) Charging Bull

4) Grappling Hook

5) Combat Roll

I agree. Cole makes so much sense in Champions, it's not even nice (jk)
I actually tried to put him in my perma-party, but Nightmare turned out better if I do a two-tank, Mage, Sera.

I mean, I thought I'd be pretty meh about him and Dorian, but Cole is awesome (even though I think he used his forget power on me in my first pt every now and then, as I kept forgetting to visit him) and Dorian's a proper awesome guy, near BFF.

What's sad about Alexius is, he actually did most of it to help his son. He has a human side to it. He's just being a little selfish (a lot...) but maybe he would be a whole different man if his son hadn't...

Sera is also super smart, IMO, and also insecure about her intelligence. You can see her trailing off a lot when she's thinking about something, and I think its because she doesn't think it will be received well, and it's hard enough for her to process all this stuff, she doesn't need someone talking down to her on top of that.

THIS. all of it. she second guesses herself a lot and it's later revealed, in some way, that she may have been severely mentally abused...she sorta expects your character to talk down to her at some point. someone did that to her. or multiple folks. it shows though.

There's definitely insecurity issues with her. In one of her quests...

Where we ask everyone for gift ideas, she says it's the best gift ever. Not the silly shaving thing. The fact that we openly acknowledged her as our lover. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

And yeah, it's a HUGE lore development and I think they treated it like it happened in just that quest and now it's over...which...ack. Idk. Open that door, and it makes things real messy.

 

I'm going to disagree strongly here.

I think that the time travel was really well handled. It's clear that Dorian and Alexius were working on it beforehand but it just didn't work in the normal world. Only the breech allowed it to happen. Added to that, Alexius couldn't travel outside the time of the breech's existence, so he couldn't rescue his son. It was limited and tied to the thing that you're trying to get rid of. Basically you can only time travel if you open a breach and want to time travel forward. Also, we only time travel ahead and then back to where we started so no silly meeting ourselves or other stuff that makes no sense.

 

In summary: In order to time travel you have to threaten the fabric of reality and even then there's no reaching back in time allowed. That means that it's not something that they can casually throw about in future games. If you're going to have time travel, that's exactly the way to do it, I think. It's certainly much better handled than, say, the time turner in Harry Potter.

 

In addition to that, the scene with Leliana at the end is just so powerful. Possibly my favourite single moment in a DA game so far, and I'm not religious.

The quest is called 'a woman who wants for nothing' and the the people who do offer suggestions, Varric (if she wants something, she'll say), Vivienne (shave something rude on your privates) and Solas (something flitting/flighty), get it so incredibly wrong. Even Blackwall, who gets along best with her, has no idea. It shows none of the companions truly understand Sera. Sera never tells us what she wants directly. Sure she's amused by the shaving thing but it's not a big deal. And Solas gets it so wrong that it's not even funny. She wants the exact opposite of what he suggests: she wants something meaningful and long lasting.

 

The Inquisitor unwittingly gets the best gift for her. Rather fitting for someone romancing Sera, who is not a planner. A spontaneous, public display of love is what she wanted most, and that's what she got. Excuse me, I got something in my eye.

She had difficulties learning to read and write so she's not eloquent in her speech and it can be hard to understand her text messages and such, but she's easily as intelligent as me in many ways, and more so in others. She's much better with her finances than I, for example. By the measures that society uses, though, I'm the intelligent one. I get that vibe from Sera. she doesn't have the formal education or the words to express herself like Dorian, but she can be very perceptive. She's a potentially brilliant person whose development was stymied by being born into a crappy position in Thedas's social strata.

 

Previous to the Inquisition, I think she felt trapped and she thought that the best she could do was put a smile on oppressed people's faces by causing mischief for the nobles, but now she thinks that maybe, just maybe she can help make things truly better. She's still stymied by insecurities due to her past life though. I think that you're right Cat, in that true acceptance by someone as an equal and a lover is something she really needs. It helps to show her that she really can be more.

There's something uniquely satisfying about using Leaping Shot to tumble backwards, fall off the map, die, get respawned at 1 health right in an enemy's face, and then die again. Followed by Dorian reviving me because he's just that cool.
