I'm still firmly in my pseudo psychologist armchair, so here's more about Sera. Oodles of spoilers ahead!
Enough rambling for now. Gotta get ready for work and a long week end of Dragon Age!

I can't find fault with any of that. I agree with it entirely. I noted her reaction at the ball and interestingly I took Solas and he made no comment. Sera gets a lot of vilification on this board and it's very unfair at times because she does have a conscience and she does care about people. Her nastiest remarks are for nobles and it shows who she stands for.

What saddens me is how so many seem unable to pick up on that. The fact that she has such a distinct perspective/personality inadvertently puts her at a disadvantage in terms of how she is perceived by players.

They obviously pay too much attention to her bluster which is more a defensive mechanism than anything else. They miss how she really reacts to situations of injustice or crime that shed insights into who she really is.

A lot of people don't really get analysis.

Mind, it took me time to get there. I did not enjoy her at all at first. Then I took a step back. Then I spotted a few chinks in her armor. Then I took some time to think. She's really like tequila and skittles. The first sip makes you go 'good god, what is that?', then you get used to it and it's not so bad, then you get wasted and it's totes awesome!
Seriously though, she improves if you take the time to understand her. Her personality makes it difficult because the bluster is very in your face. It helps to talk to the others about her, especially Cole. He knows everything.

Exactly. She's pretty reasonable about nobles too if they're not douchebags. She likes my goody-two shoes Trevelyan. Funny how often she's pegged as one of the 'evil' team mates.

In a way, she reminds me of Thane in ME2, who I thought his troubled personality and deep philosophy made him an exceptionally well written character. While he had his fair share of fans, lots of people regarded him as crazy and creepy.
When I see Sera today and what others are saying of her, I find myself taken back to the good old days. I think Vivienne is also the same, though perhaps to a lesser extent.

I've seen people state this here and it's such an odd thing to say. I mean if they want to argue that she makes bitchy comments to party members, sure, she does. But she hasn't lied about who she is or had a shady secret agenda like some of the other party members. I was put off by her at first but she has become one of my favorite team members and she does get along with some nobles and mages. It's already been mentioned how well she gets along with Dorian.

Anyone who sees anything in a DA game in terms of pure right/wrong or good/evil clearly hasn't been paying attention. That or they're taking a position because they like a good argument and/or are taking their RPing of a character onto the boards.

The funny thing about that: Sera is pretty judgmental of nobles and mages she doesn't know. She just sees the mess they make. Fair enough. She does take the time to get to know the ones she meets though. Solas is a jerk to her, so it figures she hates him. She hates Vivienne, but Sera just can't let it go. She wants to get under her skin and keeps failing (skitter skitter
). Dorian is ok with her. Their little insult match is pretty funny too. I'll have to dig up the exact phrasing.

I think with Dorian it's a case of he doesn't get offended by her jibes. It rolls off his back and he playfully responds to her. I think she has warmed to him in my game because of that. Viv is nasty to her and Solas is condescending so you're right that she just despises them. I'd love to see the exchanges between her and Dorian posted though as some of them passed so quickly I've forgotten the exact barbs that were tossed.

Vivienne VS Sera because it's hilarious!
I've said before that I think that Vivienne and Sera make for an interesting comparison. Vivienne did start off from a position of disadvantage in terms of being a mage and hence cut out of the corridors of power, but she worked within the system and carved out a niche for herself that didn't previously exist. She made herself important without actually seeking to dismantle anything. She can even get to be Divine!
Sera was of course even more disadvantaged to start with, being an elf with no access to the education available in a tower, but equally she wants the chance to become more than she was "born to be". Her approach is to rattle the system from the outside. I don't think she sees herself as capable of doing more than causing trouble until the inquisitor comes along, but once (s)he does, it's an opportunity to really help shape a new world. She really wants the inquisitor to see the world through the eyes of the disenfranchised not just the traditionally powerful.
Their approaches, talents, and education put them at odds and yet they share one quality - the desire to rise above "their station" and make a difference in the world.
