One should know where one stands and where one is going and never forget the road already walked /philosophy  /genderneutralenglishftw :P

I prefer to say 'if you forget where you started how do you know you're going anywhere?' :D

You can do that on a personal level, and look to your own private past. You don't need your race or culture to tell you about past roads. It's just a matter of whether one views oneself as an individual or not. Which is what Sera does. She's just "Sera". Not an elf, in her mind.

No, but knowing them and understanding them can help you choose the road you wish to travel in life. Sera is not interested in elven history and cultural baggage but she is still affected by it whether she likes it or not.

I think the things that affect her are ultimately just abstracts. "Social injustice", "poverty", etc.. They don't need to be defined through an elven lens to matter. She can still care about them that way. And in this case, she'll end up helping more people.

Afraid i require a dictionary and a bit of time to translate DA elven :P  Propably should turn subtitles on for my next playthrough and screenshot it for translation. I REALLY want to know what he said to the lady that made her give up the amulet she found. He didn't sound hostile at all. Interestingly enough, she doesn't have anything to say abou Sera at all and i don't think Sera says anything either.

If you play as an elf, you know what he's saying.... like it actually translates it in the subtitles... cant remember if it just became english while it was being said as well or if it triggered the elven, with english subs...

I like listening to the bickering. It's something that needs to be said. It's a very important issue. The value of the future vs the past.

I'm on Sera's side btw. To hell with the past.

.. Although, future isn't accurate. She's actually more about the present. Just wants to have fun. Can't fault her on that.

I got the impression she starts care more about the future, at least in a romance but generally she's all about what's going on now.

You can do that on a personal level. You don't need your race or culture to tell you about past roads. Everyone in life has their own past road. It's just a matter of whether one views oneself as an individual or not. Which is what Sera does. She's just "Sera". Not an elf, in her mind.

The generations past and their actions have shaped you whether you want them or not. You don't have to agree with them, but the the road behind is always longer than any one person has walked themselves. This holds even for Sera.

There's a fine line between learning from and understanding the past and getting sucked into foolish nostalgia...

They do respawn regularly, AFAIK.

Until you deal with their mom (the big main dragon).

Personally, I don't even know what that means. I barely have a past to tap into myself. I came from a mixed household (Asian and White..), with little connection to extended family or culture. Barely talked to anyone like that. My past is just immediate family. And the present culture I live in (America in general).

I'm a history buff and all that, but it means little to me on a personal level. At best, I get abstract lessons from that. Not anything to shape me in specific ways.

question: I can understand sera's point to a degree on dalish, but I am curious why she doesn't seem to care about the city elves. City Elves tend to be far more oppressed and worse off then most other people, especially in Orlais.

Thats total bullshit...

Thats like saying watever happen in the past..ya re not ya cose the past made ya..so much for being born to begin with. What the past does is shape society as whole...and wherever ya came from ....but it doesnt shape YOU . You still you..and you still can accept the said past or reject it....and not adhere to it .

What shape a person are event , and society and cultures and all that nonsense we breath and eat everyday from everything around us .

My ancestor dont shape me (for wich I,m thankful..cose they were all brain dead)........and if I dont accept my ethnie or my origins..or my culture.......I'm Me . and Thats all that matter to Me..because I wanna be me..I dont wanna be...the one in zillion in that area .

Some peoples are proud of their ancestors and their origins and swear just by them . Good for them...

But not everyone has the luxuary to look back..far back and say 'Wow..I'm came from that ? my peoples ? my grand grand grand grand pa did that ? Wow..I wanna be like that'......

Hum from what I'm getting it is due...to the lady who raised her making her feel like being a city elf was a bad thing.....so I guess she resent them...

Thats like..your mom clinging to being poor and saying we are poor cose we have freckles . Then ya go to an alienage and find ya peoples who all have freckles.....and find them all poor..so no proof that ya can be more...so ya resent them...screaming 'Why couldnt ya be different or be better and not poor..so I can think that we can be more..but there ya go..all poor making what mum said true..so I hate ya'....

So to fight that..she cut herself from city elf as well..and she is just Sera .

I maybe wrong but thats what I'm getting from her...

She does care. See her reaction to the elven servants being killed in Halamshiral. What she doesn't like to do is separate them out from other oppressed people. She wants all to be treated the same. In her mind that's the only way things can move forward. I think she's getting ahead of herself and being naively idealistic, but that's the core I think. She doesn't want elves to single themselves out as different, either in a positive or negative way.

Exactly. She'll give approval for any little good deed you do for common folk.. elf or otherwise.

In this respect, she's a lot like Cass. Their basic morals are similar.. just not the attitudes.

edit: In fact, Solas is a bit like this too. If he got over the elf discussion, he could agree with Sera on the important things in the here and now.

really? I agree with her...it is not naive....

It the right thing to do...when someone is poor does it matter if he has pointy ear? no..poor is poor . Just like being a hero..shouldnt matter if ya are an elf or a mage or a warrior....deeds is all that matter not what color or heigh ya have .

Hinterlands refugees being the best in-game example. It was pretty telling.

It's a noble aim for Theodosian society. What's naive is to think that you can just click your fingers and make it so...
