I've mentioned it before but Sten murdered an entire family because he couldn't find his sword, yet many love him. Sera kills a noble that tried to kill everyone in the group and she's the devil.

The key here is that we didn't see Sten do this. It makes a big difference for people. Also he killed them over a thing. Sure, it was significant to him, but still. It's easy to gloss over the fact that he killed children because we didn't see him do it.

 

I wonder how people would have reacted if they had shown that in flashback.

I think that's true for all the characters in this game. And it's true in real life too. How much do we truly know people? It's pretty rare that a person is completely without depth. People who are usually fall under the label sociopath, fanatic, monomaniac, etc. Erimond is a good example. Even Cole says so.

 

 

Ah Erimond, man I hated that guy, like srsly been a loooooong time since I've come across a Bioware character I hated as much as him. 

 

Don't have any companions I dislike or strongly dislike in this game oddly enough but man I hated that guy. If only we were allowed to make him tranquil as a non-mage. *pouts*

Dorian is a good example. He straight up has slave apologetics, but the response I've seen is UGH GAIDER, I'm gonna ignore that because he's my baby, not "this is a flaw and I can't accept him for it."

Alistair too. He calls Morrigan a b*tch, just like Sera does to Viv, but with him it's not an unacceptable flaw that makes him irredeemable.

 

Not to mention Alistair can be childish sometimes, but ppl are like "Muh babbu! I'll protect you." with him.

Though even if Sera doesn't get some character growth, i don't necessarily see it as a bad thing even though i'll admit, i was one of those people who wanted some good growth for her.. then some posters in the Sera thread got me thinking: "Why would i want her to change so she can fit to my views?".

 

Some people just can't change and it's a life fact. If something big, life changing, happens to them, then maybe. Maybe Sera is one of those people who either won't change or will, with time.

 

Or maybe Lukas will indeed surprise us in a future DLC. Who knows.

I think you hit the nail on the head right there. A lot of people who complain about her lack of character growth (myself included at one point) really mean that she doesn't change to their liking.

 

Sera feels adrift in the big bad world and she clings to her beliefs like the one solid rock amid the crashing waves. She's not letting go in a hurry, unless she finds safe ground elsewhere.

It takes me a bit longer to analyze characters unless I've already talked extensively about it with others to have my thoughts all already collected.. sometimes I get somewhere with typing it up on here but then the thread moves on and we're already on a new topic.... but I'll try to contribute more often.

Also i just realized, Leli instantly ignores the quizzy's orders about not killing that lady and nobody makes a fuss, but ppl are burning Sera for killing that noble without quizzy's orders. Oh, the irony...

 

I failed to save her from the darkside my first playthough as well. Who would have expect Bioware to put such an important conversation right at the start of the game? My reaction was the same. lol
