I respecced Iron Bull as a sword and shield warrior. Much better. If you get the noble shield for him it doesn't look so bad. The thing is huge. Also it looks like an insect carapace on his back. Oddly fitting.

Sword/board Bull with Fade Touched Silverite armour does become a more tolerable tank but he still needs more babysitting than Cass or Blackwall. Guy is designed to be a DPS two hander...

Which sucks IMO.

He's not tanky enough to be the only warrior in the party and doesn't hit hard enough to justify a spot ahead of Varric or Sera for me.

We got to keep in mind that the Cole we know is just a spirit that copied the persona of the original human Cole. This spirit Cole was never personally abused though it seems spirits of compassion are highly sensitive to the emotions of others. That said, Cole's banters are one of the best ways to get to know your companions better. He provides so much insight if you have the patience to examine what he means with his somewhat cryptic speech.

2h warriors actually do hit hard enough to match rogue damage but you need to consistently knock enemies down so that Mighty Blow can do its max damage. Thats why I like to use explosive shot to support Iron Bull as well as giving him charging bull.

Early on I find that 2h warriors can deal more damage to high armor targets than archers. On nightmare, the only class I can directly kill the prologue boss, before closing the rift enough times to finish the mission, is with a 2h warrior. Thats because the base damage of 2h weapons is sky high.

Giving Iron Bull both turn the bolt and combat roll (set at preferred) greatly increases Bull's survivability. I also don't bother giving him taunt abilities, guard is mostly useless on nightmare unless you can regenerate a ton of it quickly which you can only do with shield wall. Though if you can take both upgraded Block and Slash and Challenge, Iron Bull can make a decent off tank for your S&S tank. The key with a 2h warrior is to constantly knock enemies down which will prevent enemies from even attacking Bull. 2h warriors are the master of constant knockdown. Their bane are the bruisers that are immune to physical effects.

Even if the Cole we know did not suffer this, it shows just how unsuitable the circle system was. There was no way to protect mages from this kind of thing. I said before how the Circle is like an insane asylum. Back in the day, people were not too finicky about who got sent there and there were all kinds of horrific abuse inflicted on the inmates. It was allowed to happen because people didn't want to know.

It makes me wonder: does a Templar threatening to accuse a mage of using blood magic count as using blood magic? It's a way to control people either way. So it's like using blood magic without actually using blood magic... It's a mind screw.

For me though, Varric spamming mines and Leaping Shot has proven far better for supporting my tank since he can consistently hit hard and no friendly fire on their mines.

And when it comes to dealing damage, only Varric during Hail of Arrows can match Sera since Tempest is broken.

Tempest is awesome! You have to wonder if the flask of fire/thousand cuts thing was an oversight or deliberate. Sure, you can kick her out at any time, but think about what you're giving up...

Wifey, you must be ahead of me in time zones, but I'll be drinking with ya soon.

Eh, Fire Flask is not meant to give unlimited focus. Its a bug that clearly breaks the game so I do not use it. Assassin Archer is powerful enough that I don't feel the need to use an obviously game breaking exploit.

Without that exploit, Flask of Lightning and a good bow can turn Sera into a machine gun.

Even used as intended, Flask of Fire is still powerful just not game breaking.

Ikr. About the only time I weighed in on a Sera hate thread was to put someone in their place over her usefulness as an archer.

I live just fine without the tempest tree but then again an assassin archer is pretty broken and so is knight enchanter. I don't feel like I'm taking any longer to clear areas by taking Iron Bull over Sera. But its situational, if I know I'll face bruisers then I'll leave Iron Bull at home because not being able to knockdown an enemy really cuts into his damage potential. But then again, in this case I'd probably just take two mages over a second rogue. As a rogue myself, I feel like I need more CC and not more damage and Mages or 2h Warriors bring that CC.

Fair enough, Assassin is my preference too albeit melee.

Since I know my rogues better than any other class, I prefer having a second one with me.
I usually alternate between Varric or Sera depending on the area.

every single tank that people have mentioned that does so much damage has completely sucked for me. I give them the BEST arms and armor and they still do nothing but die. Cassie has been consistent through 4 playthroughs. I don't get that. I actually want to play a 2H warrior so I can figure out what's missing with IB because I like him. Usually, if I play as a certain class, I can figure out how to spec my companions better. Didn't have to do that with Cassie doe. She came out the door beast mode. Just saying.

There's probably that, but I also have a very weird schedule. I get up at the time some people go to bed. :D But oh dear, maybe we should set a good example for our BSN child. Pace yourself, kiddo!

So, I wanted to say that reading this thread today has been most interesting, all the character analysis were good. I just wish I was able to contribute in a meaningful way, but alas I'm not. ^^;

I also wanted to wish a merry Christmas to everyone! May you ladies and gents spend these days having tons of fun! :wizard:

With that being said, I'm off to game some more. See ya'll! :D

I'm fine with her not changing drastically.  I'd prefer it, actually.  But, I once rage-quit a Baldur's Gate 2 romance playthrough because you could change one of the LIs morality alignment via a romance conversation.

I like Sera how she is now even with her sucky parts (and even if it means she dumps my elf).  Though, I don't mind a bit of development/change and I think Sera goes through some of it but I hate when it gets to the point where I feel I'm 'fixing' the character to my character's (or my) liking so they are a more palatable romance/companion.

A bit of development is all that's needed to even things out for her. I don't even want to change her completely; she wouldn't be herself otherwise. The problem is there isn't even a bit of development. Sera is completely impenetrable, and any attempt to change that will automatically turn you down. You literally can't do a thing about it. By the end of the game, you find that she is the same girl you met at the beginning, and nothing you've done or said has influenced her to any visible degree.

Of course, I still like her and I love that she is so persistent, but persistence to such a high degree does make me raise an eyebrow, considering we were able to influence similarly hard-headed characters in the past. I see no reason why that shouldn't be true for Sera.

I'd hope whatever expansion or DLC we get down the road sheds some light on this issue, but I won't be holding my breath.

I'm a terrible person who has no problem with Cole's mind reading because it always reveals such interesting things!!! Also, like, whatever. Cole is so precious.

Don't feel bad! I'm a fan of weird scary minds myself, Cole's being no exception :P

Two-handers aren't great at tanking. I mean, it's possible with judicious amounts of Block and Slash and lots of guard-generating abilities (Unbowed ftw) and Fade-Touched Silverite/Obsidian, but...eh.

I ran a Qunari weapon-and-sword Inquisitor recently. So long as I kept Bull on the DPS trees and didn't turn on any of his taunts, he was fine; the Inquisitor kept aggro and Bull kept killing. Once I got him the Sulevin Blade (admittedly a very late-game weapon) he could keep damage up reasonably close to everybody other than the party's rogues, and he didn't need me to babysit him like Cole always does.

Oh, I just saw that Sera actually does greatly approve of  conscripting the mages. So you can side with the mages and get Sera to approve. I thought she disapproved.........opps. So Sera Greatly Approves of conscription and disbandment. Makes sense, Sera would want those responsible for the chaos in the hinterlands held responsible.

Some people just can't change and it's a life fact. If something big, life changing, happens to them, then maybe. Maybe Sera is one of those people who either won't change or will, with time.

Sera does change, she stays with the Inquisition.

Someone who defies and despises all authority, someone who is always skeptical of acting for the greater good, decides that this organistaion is worth  sticking with.

Merry Christmas Sera thread.
